Jake is getting so big that I thought I would capture how’s he’s talking now and how cute he is. He’s been trying to impress people by repeating words that he hears. Good or bad. I’ve encouraged him enough to even learn how to spell his own name and recite back to me where he lives and how old he is. I’m very proud of him.

Researchers in London have discovered that a weak immune response instigates Crohn’s disease, possibly laying to rest the popular belief that an auto-immune condition is to blame.
In a recent study, scientists at University College in London found that people with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines, encounter a lowered immune system response when trauma occurs in the body. Read more

Sleep Less with New Drug Modafinil
February 18, 2006 by Ken Savage

Russell Foster, a circadian biologist at Imperial College London, said: “The more we understand about the body’s 24-hour clock the more we will be able to override it.
“In 10 to 20 years we’ll be able to pharmacologically turn sleep off. Mimicking sleep will take longer, but I can see it happening.”
Neil Stanley, head of sleep research at the Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit at the University of Surrey, countered: “I think that would be the most hideous thing to happen to society.”
Scientists are hoping to build on the success of the drug Modafinil, a stimulant launched seven years ago which allows people to wake up refreshed after four hours of sleep.
New drugs which will allow people to survive on only two hours sleep a day are being developed, scientists have said.
The drugs will allow people to cope with the pressures of 24-hour society.
The New Scientist magazine says the new ‘lifestyle’ pills will deliver sleep which is deeper and more refreshing than the real thing, with some giving what feels like eight hours sleep in half the time.
The pills could even allow people not to sleep for several days in a row.
Kid Rock and Scott Stapp Sex Tape. So Where’s Pam Anderson?
February 18, 2006 by Ken Savage
Kid Rock has now joined the ranks of Pam Anderson, Collin Farrell, and Paris Hilton, as a sex tape of he, Creed front man Scott Stapp, and several groupies is set to be released by Red Light District. Red Light president David Joseph told US that “we acquired the tape from a third party. We haven’t decided exactly what we are doing with it but our goal is to release it toward the middle or end of this year.” That’s the same thing they said about the Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee tape.
The California-based Red Light District has uploaded a 40-second clip showing Kid Rock and Scott Stapp tag-teaming for a 45-minute love fest with several groupies while making a sex tape. Although recorded back in 1999, when Rock and Creed were on the road together, the tape only surfaced recently, according to Red Light’s president, David Joseph.
Reps for both musicians did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment, so it’s not known whether they will endorse the sale of the video in exchange for a percentage of profits, as Hilton and Rock’s ex Pamela Anderson (with her former hubby, Tommy Lee) eventually did with their sex tapes, or whether they will sue to block its release, as was the case with Colin Farrell.
Windows Defender released today. Replaces Microsoft Antispyware

Windows Defender (formally Microsoft Antispyware) Beta 2 has been released. Get it here Downloaded, installed, scanned with it, first impressions are it looks a lot nicer, cleaner simpler interface.
Windows Defender needs Automatic Update service running to get definition updates, and downloads them directly through the network connection for Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. Not sure if I like that. It scans a lot slower, especially when scanning archives. It took forever to get through my Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield 2 program folders. Those game installs are loaded with huge archive folders for maps. Only 8.4 gigs on this drive and it took 23 minutes to scan with a full system scan, spending like 22 and a half minutes on just this drive. It went through my other drive with nothing but 9.5 gigs of mp3 files very quickly. Read more
Peter Manfredo Jr Defeats Scott Pemberton in 3 Rounds
February 14, 2006 by Ken Savage

After two disappointing losses to Sergio Mora in 2005, Peter Manfredo, 25-3 (11), has greatly improved his standing with this, his biggest victory to date. For Scott Pemberton, 29-5-1 (25), the curtain may be closing on what had been a magnificent late period career, as this comes hard after a similarly one sided handling at the hands of IBF Champion Jeff Lacy last fall.
Round one: the first begins with both fighters bolting to the center of the ring a! nd pawing at each other with jabs. The size difference between Pemberton and Manfredo is apparent from the beginning, with Pemberton being the bigger of the two. Manfredo is the first to follow up on his jab with an overhand right that lands to the side of Pemberton’s head. Manfredo follows that momentum with another jab, followed by a right hook that finds it’s target. Manfredo is pushing the pace of the fight so far and has proved able to get inside and land his straight right. With twenty seconds left in the round, Manfredo lands another straight right hand that sends Pemberton stumbling back to the ropes. Manfredo lands one more right hand in the closing seconds in what was a dominant round for Manfredo. Read more

Authorities were investigating an incident in which Britney Spears was photographed driving with her infant son on her lap, but didn’t intend to pursue charges against the pop star, officials said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday that deputies went to Spears’ home to collect information for the county Department of Family and Children Services. A DCFS spokesman wouldn’t offer specifics.
“We don’t say who, what or if we’re investigating,” department spokesman Stu Riskin said.
The sheriff’s department won’t pursue any charges, Deputy Luis Castro said.
“Unless a deputy saw the violation, there’s nothing we can do,” he said. “We don’t even know if this took place in our jurisdiction.” Read more

What’s a Code Black, you ask? Excellent question.
“It’s bad. It’s real bad,” said Kate Walsh, who co-stars as Dr. Addison Shepherd.
“It’s a code and it’s also black,” obfuscated executive producer Betsy Beers.
OK, that was enlightening. Is a Code Black something you made up? Is it something we could go look up someplace?
“You could,” said creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes. “And I think it says that’s bad and it’s black and it’s a code, honestly.” Read more
An Introduction to VoIP

If you have an ear for the latest computer craze, technology fad, or nifty gadget, then you’ve probably heard about VoIP. What is VoiP? Let’s start by defining what exactly “VoIP†means. VoIP stand for Voice over Internet Protocol. It comprises an emerging set of applications and protocols that allow you to make telephone calls over the internet. The popularity of VoIP has really been catching on and is already starting to replace existing telephone networks. Some people have cancelled their traditional phone service and now exclusively use VoIP.
You may have thought that VoIP only worked from computer to computer, and that was the original intent. Of course, you can use it this way, but VoIP has been further developed into a telephone network in its own right. Using VoIP, you can call any phone anywhere in the world, and can receive calls with phones connected to the internet or a LAN (local area network) Read more
Ayla Brown shows promise at Boston American Idol

Of the more than two dozen who made it to L.A. was local teen Ayla Brown, daughter of state Senator Scott Brown and WCVB-TV reporter Gail Huff. But the judges were harsh on her.
She had a great pop look and her voice was pretty good. She just seemed to be a little plain in her performance. Maybe it was the song she picked her nerves but either way she’s got a shot and she’s going to Hollywood. Good luck Ayla Brown.
Has a Cure for Aids Been Found?

Researchers, including a BYU scientist, believe they have found a new compound that could finally kill the HIV/AIDS virus, not just slow it down as current treatments do.
And, unlike the expensive, drug cocktails 25 years of research have produced for those with the deadly virus, the compound invented by Paul D. Savage of Brigham Young University appears to hunt down and kill HIV.
Although so far limited to early test tube studies, CSA-54, one of a family of compounds called Ceragenins (or CSAs), mimics the disease-fighting characteristics of anti-microbial and anti-viral agents produced naturally by a healthy human immune system. Read more

Richard Mullen, 52, of Malden, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing at Boston Children’s Hospital on Sunday.
A man who allegedly dressed up like Santa Claus and dropped his pants at a New Hampshire mall last year faced charges on Monday after he was caught trespassing over the weekend at a Boston hospital.
Mullen, who was a volunteer at the hospital for 11 years, was in the infant intensive care unit.
When police arrested Mullen, they found a bag containing a red balloon and several wrapped condoms in his possession.”Mr. Mullen acknowledged that he knew that he was not supposed to be in the hospital. He acknowledged receiving that trespass order,” prosecutor Jonathan Tynes said. “He explained to the officers that he was there visiting a friend who volunteers at the hospital. He was there, he stated, to help (his friend) volunteer. He was found to have a visitor’s pass with that person’s last name written on it.” Read more

Cochlear implant risks from FDA
February 6, 2006 by Ken Savage
Filed under Health, Nation News, Science
Children with an early version of the cochlear implant face an increased risk of bacterial meningitis beyond just the first two years following implantation of the hearing devices, the Food and Drug Administration warned Monday.
The increased risk means the young implant patients should be monitored as long as the electronic devices are in place for signs of the sometime fatal infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Deaf children fitted with the implants and a positioner get bacterial meningitis more often than either children with the implants that don’t have the small rubber wedge or those without implants at all, the FDA said in separate letters to patients and doctors. Read more
