Modafinil CX717 Pill Offers Mental Boost - Better Than Caffeine

May 30, 2006 by Ken Savage

Between a hectic work schedule and a thriving social life, Yves (not his real name), a 31-year-old software developer from Seattle, often doesn’t have time for a full night’s sleep. So he swallows something to make sure he doesn’t need one. “If I take a dose just before I go to bed, I can wake up after four or five hours and feel refreshed,” he says. “The alarm goes off and I’m like, let’s go!”

Yves is talking about modafinil (marketed as Modavigil in Australia), a stimulant that since its launch seven years ago has acquired a near-mythical reputation for wiring you awake without the jitters, euphoria and eventual crash that come after caffeine or amphetamines. Yves has been popping modafinil on and off for the past three years and says it is “tremendously useful”. “I find I can be very productive at work,” he says. “I’m more organised and more motivated. And it means I can go out partying on a Friday night and still go skiing early on Saturday morning.”

Modafinil is just the first of a wave of new lifestyle drugs that promise to do for sleep what the contraceptive pill did for sex - unshackle it from nature. Since time immemorial, humans have structured their lives around sleep. In the near future, we will, for the first time, be able to significantly structure the way we sleep to suit our lifestyles. Verizon’s FIOS will carry not only more than 50Mbps Internet access to the home, it will also handle entertainment channels quite nicely. Far cry from plain old telephone service (POTS). So Verizon’s intent is not to deliver high performance POTS, it is to deliver telephone, CATV, and high speed Internet. Also cool.

As a competitive entertainment and telecommunications project, we look forward to more creative and useful ideas coming from all telecom companies. I personally do not care if my entertainment comes from Comcast, DirecTV, SBC, Verizon, or Time Warner – I simply want the most advanced entertainment and communications available. I do not care if it is over fiber, copper, or through the air. I just want 450 TV channels, Internet that provides whatever content I want with no delay, and an effective way to communicate with any telephone or presence device to any point in the world.

However I live in a very technically advanced part of the United States, have not suffered a catastrophic natural disaster, and am not at the mercy of a single telecom provider. Read more

Vaccine for Adult Shingles is Approved

The FDA has approved the first vaccine for adult shingles.

The agency cleared the vaccine known as Zostavax for use in adults age 60 and older: studies showed it can prevent shingles roughly half the time. But experts say they’re worried that partial insurance coverage of the vaccine may slow its acceptance by doctors and patients.

Shingles causes a rash with blisters that usually lasts for two to four weeks. The pain associated with the blisters can be quite intense. Once this initial phase is over, nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia can set in. This pain lasts anywhere from 30 days to months or even years. It can be so severe in some people that it disrupts their lives.

The illness is caused by varicella, the same virus that causes chickenpoxchickenpox. Shingles occurs when the chickenpox virus lying dormant in nerve cells “wakes up” in older people or others with health problems. The vaccine, Zostavax, is actually a boosted dose of the chickenpox vaccine currently given to children.

Postherpetic neuralgia is more common in people older than 60. It occurs in less than 10% of people younger than 60 after a bout of shingles but in more than 40% of people older than 60.

Selling Your Structured Settlement Payments and What You Need to Know

May 26, 2006 by Ken Savage

Before the state structured settlement protection statutes and the Victims of Terrorism Relief Act of 2001 which created §5891 of the Internal Revenue Code, any one wanting to sell their settlement payments were on their own. The sale of structured settlement payment rights today requires a Court in your state to review and, if appropriate, make a “qualified order” approving the sale of such payments or a hefty 40% excise tax is applied. The concept of Court approval is intended to protect you from entering into a deal that is not in your best interest.

Should I sell my payments?

The answer to that one is difficult. The question you might ask yourself: Do I need the money now?
For example: to buy a house, pay for an education, a business opportunity or to keep from filing bankruptcy. Any good reason would make sense. To go on vacation or buy an Acura Legend might not be in your best interest.

If you have other money sources to explore, I suggest using those options first. Selling your structured settlement should be a last resort. Read more

lendingtree.com Advantages

Home sellers said that overpricing was the biggest mistake they made when listing their homes. Next worst mistake is dealing with the same real estate agent who represented the buyer. LendingTree.com is a great place to start.

Overpricing a home is the number one mistake sellers said they made when listing their homes, according to a new national real estate e-mail survey. The margin was nearly three-to-one over the second choice concerning homes for sale.

Survey respondents said their next biggest mistake was “dealing with the same real estate agent who represented the buyer,” thereby setting up a possible conflict of interest and possibly a perception that the buyer was getting a better deal with the home price.

Third biggest mistake was “failure to disclose known defects or problems.” Virtually tied for fourth place were: “under pricing their real estate properties” and “not utilizing Internet technology to market their homes.”

“With the rapid home price appreciation we’ve seen in many housing markets across the country, it’s not surprising that sellers expectations sometimes outran their local real estate market reality,” said Michael Bearden, president and CEO of HouseHunt, Inc.

Bearden expressed surprise over the negative response to agents representing both buyers and the sellers: “Usually it boils down to good communication with the consumer. The agent who communicates effectively and stays in touch throughout the real estate transaction usually has a positive experience with both the buyer and the seller.. With automated response systems customer communication should not be a problem.”

Previously, he was vice president of public relations and publications for Century 21 Real Estate Corp.; vice president of communications for AmeriNet Financial Services (now LendingTree); assistant city editor/Orange County for the Los Angeles Times; executive sports editor of the Rockford, IL, Morning Star and Register-Republic; and reporter for the Dixon, IL, Evening-Telegraph. To “let go” means not to worry about the future, but look forward to what might happen

To “let go” does not mean to stop caring, it means I can’t do it for someone else.

To “let go” is not to cut myself off, it’s the realization I can’t control another.

To “let go” is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences.

To “let go” is to admit powerlessness, which means the outcome is not in my hands.

To “let go” is not to try to change or blame another, it’s to make the most of myself.

To “let go” is not to care for, but to care about.

To “let go” is not to fix, but to be supportive.

To “let go” is not to judge, but to allow another to be a human being.

To “let go” is not to be in the middle arranging the outcomes, but to allow others to affect their own destinies.

To “let go” is not to be protective, it’s to permit another to face reality.

To “let go” is not to deny, but to accept.

To “let go” it not to intrude, worry or argue, but instead to search out my own shortcomings, and correct them.

To “let go” is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future.

To “let go” is to fear less, and love more.

GPS Ankle BraceletGPS Ankle Bracelet Plugged into a phone outlet in Joe Magno’s ranch home on Rock Avenue in Hudson is a black box.
And strapped around the former high school teacher’s ankle is a rubber and metal bracelet. If he so much as steps outside for fresh air, dunks the bracelet or tries to cut it off, the radio connection between the two is broken, an alarm rings in a field monitoring office staffed 24 hours a day in government center in Boston.
Magno is one of more than 600 people in the state assigned a radio frequency electronic monitoring bracelet. The 65-year-old is awaiting trial on charges he raped a male student at Maynard High School and is back in Middlesex Superior Court tomorrow for a pre-trial conference.
With more bracelets in use nearly every year, are they working? Are more people destined to be fitted with the newest GPS bracelets, now reserved for about 100 sex offenders?

Of 8,300 people who have been strapped with the bracelet, only 8 percent, about 700, have tried to break it off, according to Deputy Commissioner of Probation Paul Lucci. One of them was Hudson wedding photographer Gary Tobin, who cut off his bracelet and fled to New Hampshire while awaiting trial on charges he robbed a pizzeria with a machete in 2004. Read more

Underwater Robot That Swims Like A Fish

Robot FishRobot Fish Students and professors at Nanyang Technological University have developed robots that swim like fish.

They have developed robots that swim like a fish.

To perfect their robot’s seamless movements underwater, the researchers have for two years been studying how a fish swims in water.

Low Kin Huat, Associate Professor, NTU’s Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, said: “Definitely we can see that the fish is a smart swimmer. We believe that by knowing and understanding the nature of the fish’s swimming mode, we would be able to come up with a smart swimming vehicle.

“Submarines and so-called ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), they actually use a propeller. But in this robot fish design, actually we use a natural undulating fin motion. You can see that it’s quite quiet and actually it’s good for the environment, talking about pollution issues, talking about noise issues.”

The researchers have been studying stingrays and knife-fish by observing how their fins move when they swim. Read more

Cool Your PC With Parts From Home Depot

May 11, 2006 by Ken Savage

So the other day I’m sitting in my home office and the GPU fan in my PC decides to start doing the dry-bearing death rattle. Just great, more noise. With the bad GPU fan, the inefficient CPU fan, PSU fan and two case fans the thing sounds like a garbage disposal ingesting a hand full of TTL logic chips.

Oh, and the external chassis for the pair of SCSI changers I use for CD ripping has it’s own really loud fan.

About this same time, I acquired an old DELL PowerEdge 4200 server which came in a huge double wide case that could hold all of my drives plus some. But what to do with the empty half? A second motherboard? No! Water cooling! But not just water cooling, there’s plenty of room so let’s see if we can water cool an Athlon 2400+ with no fans and no pumps, let’s see how quiet a PC can be.

Now, I’m a cheap bastard so I’m not going to pay for a bunch of fancy-ass water cooling swag from Koolance or Zalman or some such. Nope! I’m off to the plumbing section at Home Depot!

“Choose Life” License Plates to Support Adoption in Massachusetts

May 5, 2006 by Ken Savage
Filed under Boston, Family, Health, Science

A Wakefield woman is spearheading efforts to bring a specialty license plate to Massachusetts that encourages adoption over abortion, even though similar plates in other states have brought legal challenges.

Merry Nordeen, who opposes abortion, is gathering support for a “Choose Life” license plate, part of a nationwide effort by abortion opponents to raise money for groups that support adoption.

She recently started an Internet campaign to collect $40 checks from 3,000 people who are interested in the plates. If she gathers enough support, she can bring her proposal to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

The plate design Nordeen proposes is yellow, with the words “Choose Life” written in a child’s writing and with childlike drawings of a young boy and girl. Read more
