Keene NH Dentist Paying Kids Not to Eat Candy
October 31, 2006 by Ken Savage

Dixon Orthodontics in Keene New Hampshire is giving out cash to kids for their Halloween candy.
The dentist is buying back candy after Halloween for $2/pound. They say they will also match all the money they collect from the candy for cash drive to donate to a former Keene High School swimmer paralyzed in a swimming accident during the summer.
Dr. Jeffrey Dixon said he will give some of the candy to local nursing homes and soup kitchens then throw the remainder away. A lot of the kids he says come in after Halloween with broken braces and loose wires from eating so much junk hard candy and ding-dongs and ho ho’s. The buy-back Dr Dixon says, helps kids eat less candy, and helping former Keene High School student Kelley Goddu with medical bills.
How many kids will be sifting through his garbage next week? I see it as helping kids from becoming obese.
So what do you think? Is this just a publicity stunt or is Dr. Jeffrey Dixon and Dixon Orthodontics doing a good thing for the community?

Alarm Clock Catastrophe Dunkin Donuts Commercial
October 25, 2006 by Ken Savage
I’m having an alarm clock catastrophe this morning for sure. OK so I woke this morning too late to go to the gym but early enough so I could do my errands this morning and get to work on time. So I slept in a bit after hitting snooze on my alarm. Which I never do. After all I have it’s so serene to lay in bed after you pimp my bedroom.
When I realized that I slept through the alarm and propped my head out from under the covers and tried to clear my eyes to look at the alarm clock.
8:33am!!
I’m late for work.
When I launched my ass out of bed and practically jumped into the shower with my clothes still on I could hear the Dunkin Donuts commercial playing on the TV, Alarm Clock Catastrophe. It made me laugh and I thought I’m not the only one going through this today so relax. hahaha

Lowell Police Chief Edward Davis Heading to Boston

How is Boston Police Chief Ed Davis doing in his new job?
Ed Davis, who engineered a drop in violent crime of more than 50 percent in Lowell over the past dozen years by pushing officers to walk beats, received the offer over the weekend, said the advisers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to allow the mayor to make the public announcement.
That announcement has been scheduled for today.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino is poised to name longtime Lowell Police Superintendent Edward Davis, a strong proponent of community policing, as the next police commissioner of Boston, two advisers connected to City Hall said yesterday.
The decision ends an extremely secretive, highly structured, and widespread search that, in the end, focused largely on finalists outside of the Boston Police Department a sign that Menino is looking for aggressive change at police headquarters during one of the bloodiest years in his tenure as mayor. Miss Howard Stern Andrea Ownbey

The number of country artists who have appeared on Howard Stern’s radio show is small.
Willie Nelson has, and so have the Dixie Chicks. Add rising country star Trent Tomlinson to that short but impressive list.
A native of Kennett, Mo. (also the hometown of Sheryl Crow) Trent Tomlinson scored with his first single, “Drunker Than Me,” a based-in-fact, humorous ode to a woman who drank more than he did on a date.
Miss Howard Stern Dances
While the song peaked at No. 19 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, it received enough airplay to be heard by Andrea Ownbey, a former stripper who holds the dubious distinction of being known as “Miss Howard Stern.” Stern and his crew became aware of Trent Tomlinson’s single when Ownbey sang it at a karaoke contest.
When Trent Tomlinson heard about Ownbey’s performance, he offered to travel to New York to sing a duet with her on Stern’s show. Read more

Whitney Houston Wants A Divorce

After a crazy 14-year marriage marked by drug arrests and stints in rehab, Whitney Houston is divorcing Bobby Brown.
The pop singer filed divorce papers in Orange County Superior Court this week, a month after filing for legal separation from Bobby Brown, Houston’s publicist Nancy Seltzer said Tuesday.
The documents could not be obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press and Brown’s attorney Phaedra Parks declined to comment.
Whitney Houston, 43, had asked in her separation papers that she be granted custody of the couple’s 13-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, and that Bobby Brown, 37, be allowed visitation rights.
The couple wed in 1992, with Houston at the height of her fame as a Grammy-winning superstar known for such hits as “I Will Always Love You.”
Brown won acclaim for his gritty R&B songs as a one-time member of the boy band New Edition.
During their marriage, Brown was arrested for drugs and alcohol and Houston entered drug rehabilitation programs twice.
In an attempt to clean up her public image, Houston stepped out last month for an event in Beverly Hills with cousin
Dionne Warwick and mogul Clive Davis, with whom she is working on a new album.
Brown, who also has two teenage children with a Massachusetts woman, recently paid up to $11,000 in delinquent child support after being threatened with arrest two weeks ago if he stepped back into the state.
Brown’s attorney has said he was having a “very difficult” time due to the separation initiated by Houston.
Diddy and Danity Kane Back on Tour

The Pussycat Dolls will open the show on all North American dates and Danity Kane will also join the bill for U.S. concerts. Ticket on-sales for the tour begin October 14.
The arena concert tour stops include Dallas, Los Angeles, Boston, San Diego, Phoenix, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Toronto, Miami, Montreal, New York.
The North American tour follows Christina’s recently announced European concerts, kicking-off November 17 in Sheffield, England including shows in Austria, Holland, Ireland, Germany and Switzerland.
And where has Diddy been? Diddy hasn’t released an album in five years. And although he helped push his teen-pop group, Danity Kane, to the top of the album charts, he has also learned to lie low. Two acts on his label, Bad Boy — the R&B singer Cassie and the pop-friendly rapper Yung Joc — scored summer hits without much visible involvement from him. Read more
McGruff the Crime Dog is Going Digital

McGruff the Crime Dog is going digital. The 26-year-old mascot is the centerpiece of the National Crime Prevention Council’s new campaign to “Take a Bite Out of Cyber Crime.” The Web site ByteCrime.org, formally launched Wednesday, offers a free, 36-page online brochure with tips.
“The message remains the same: Do your part to prevent crime before it occurs,” said Ann Harkins, the council’s vice president for programs. “You start with lights, locks and alarms to protect your home. Now the equivalent is security to keep the bad guys out in cyberspace.”
On the site, McGruff challenges people to immunize their computers by installing anti-virus, firewall and other software. Discounts and free 30-day trials are offered through a partnership with security vendor McAfee Inc.
The brochure, aimed at individuals and small businesses, covers a variety of dangers online — from malware to sexual predators — and the tools and techniques available for protection. It also addresses special situations, such as surfing the Web from public terminals at cybercafes or telecommuting into office networks.
India Arie to Release Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy

Soul diva India.Arie says a previously unreleased version of her song “I Am Not My Hair” will finally be heard in a new Lifetime Television movie, “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy.”
In fact, she says this version a duet with pop-rocker Pink is actually the original version of the song. It will be available on iTunes beginning October 23.
“We both had something to say with this song, and we wanted to work together,” Arie explains. “This duet should have been the original version on my album (”Testimony: Vol. I, Life & Relationship”), but it fell through the cracks.” When Lifetime asked about using the song for the film, Arie said, “Well, I have this other version that you might like to use.”
Get a New India Arie Ringtones here for your cell phone.
According to Arie, while the song’s original idea was rooted in Pink’s decision to do away with her pink locks, the last verse was written after watching bald cancer-survivor Melissa Etheridge’s triumphant performance on the Grammy Awards last year.
“Her performance brought tears to my eyes,” Arie says. “At that moment in time, her performance was a juxtaposition of pain and beauty. It symbolized the beauty of strength.”
The Lifetime movie, premiering October 23, stars Sarah Chalke (”Scrubs”) and, in a cameo role, Patti LaBelle.
Is The Next Big Thing in Ringtones, Classic Rock?

While hiphop acts may rule today’s ringtone charts, yesterday’s stars are introducing the format to a broader audience and drive tomorrow’s growth.
Only about 10 percent of wireless subscribers buy ringtones today, primarily young adults purchasing hip-hop and R and B-themed content. Record labels and wireless operators are keen to expand their market, particularly as the dominant format shifts from polyphonic ringtones to master recording clips. Exploiting the vast library of catalog music, they say, is emerging as a key strategy in that effort.
Acts like Devo, the B-52’s, the Ramones, the Allman Brothers Band and Jimmy Buffett are generating healthy ringtone sales, and even Pink Floyd has found its way onto the mobile deck. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” is one of the best-selling catalog ringtones of all time, with more than 1.2 million units sold, and became the first licensed track to appear in a mobile videogame.
It only takes 30 seconds to sign up for Blinko and you can start downloading some of today’s hottest and best ringtones. Join now and get a ringtone at no charge!
Indeed, catalog-based ringtones are now the format’s fastest-growing segment. Universal Music Group (UMG), for instance, says catalog ringtones sales are up 80% from last year and now represent 10 percent of all its ringtone sales. Read more
Mel Gibson Tells Diane Sawyer He’s 65 Days Sober
October 11, 2006 by Ken Savage
Mel Gibson calls his anti-Semitic rant following his arrest for drunk driving in July “the stupid ramblings of a drunkard.” In an interview with Diane Sawyer set to air on “Good Morning America” on Thursday and Friday, Gibson says that though staying sober is a struggle, he has not had a drink in 65 days.
He adds that he plans to continue making movies and working to heal himself and those he offended.
“All you can do is take another step, keep breathing,” he says, according to a partial transcript of the interview released by ABC.
Clean shaven and casually dressed in jeans and a blue checkered shirt, Gibson tells Sawyer he began drinking two months before sheriff’s deputies arrested him in Malibu on July 28. Maybe he should have tried to improve his bedroom environment.
“Years go by, you’re fine,” he says. “And then all of a sudden in a heartbeat, in an instant, on an impulse, somebody shoves a glass of Mescal in front of your nose and says, “It’s from Oaxaca.” And it’s burning its way through your esophagus and you go, “Oh man, what did I do that for? I can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.”
The interview with Sawyer is the first time Gibson has spoken to the media since sparking a scandal by unleashing what he later called “vitriolic and harmful words” during his arrest. Gibson told the arresting officer: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” and asked him, “Are you a Jew?”

Last Letter Home
Hello there my dearest love
Today I write to you about our sons
The boys start school today
They’re the spitting image of you in every way
Hey son it’s Dad
I hope this letter finds you well out of harm’s way
We saw the news today it frightened your Mom
Now all she does is pray
If I lead will you follow?
Will you follow if I lead?
Hey Melissa it’s me don’t be afraid
I’m in good hands I’m gonna be home soon
It’s time to watch the children grow up
I wanna be more than a voice on the phone
Thanks Ma I got your package today
I love “The Fields Of Athenry”
I swear I want ‘em to play that song on the pipes
At my funeral when I die
I stand alone in the distance
And the foreground slowly moves
“We regret to inform you that on January 28th Sgt. Andrew Farrar died while serving his country in the Al-Anbar province of Iraq words cannot convey our sorrow”

Lee Jeans Ad Featuring Lolita is “Porn-like”

Lee Jeans‘ controversial “Lolita” ad poster for spring-summer 2006 has been found acceptable by the Advertising Standards Board.
Shot by renowned US photographer Terry Richardson, the advertisement - shown in locations including Toorak Road, South Yarra - featured the standard cliches of the soft-porn aesthetic: lollipop being sucked, breast half-exposed, legs spread.
Groups including Australian Childhood Foundation had expressed outrage about the advertisement.
“The clothes can hardly be seen,” wrote one complainant to the advertising industry’s self-regulator. “This type of ad demeans women.”
