Bypass Surgery for Regis Philbin
Regis Philbin, co-host of “Live with Regis and Kelly” announced on Monday mornings show that he will undergo bypass surgery to repair clogged arteries. He shared with America that he has been having chest pains and shortness of breath for weeks. He did get more than one medical opinion on this and the consensus is that it absolutely needs to be done.
Philbin has had angioplasty performed twice in the last 14 years. “I was looking forward to angioplasty”, said Philbin. “You know, you get in, bang bang bang, they blow it open and then you leave the next day.” Unfortunately it is not going to be such a simple procedure this time.
Regis Philbin will be in-patient at the hospital for about 1 week and will need about 1-3 months at home for recovery. Right now the speculation is that he will be away from “Live with Regis and Kelly” for about 5 weeks. With this procedure you are restricted from any physical activity what so ever until your breastbone is healed. ![]()
Regis was very candid with his audience stating “I don’t want to do it darn it”. Obviously he does know how serious this procedure is but that didn’t stop him and Ripa from making some jokes at his expense on Monday’s show. Those jokes are exactly what America loves about “Live with Regis and Kelly”. The chemistry between Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa is exactly why America tunes in every weekday morning.
What are the shows plans for a fill in host? While Regis is out on medical leave there will be numerous guest hosts trying to fill his shoes. Anderson Cooper will be the first in on Tuesday and Wednesday. There has not been any announcements of who else will be guest hosting.
I have to say, I’m not a regular viewer of this show by any means but on the rare occasions that I have stopped to watch a few minutes I do get a kick out of the banter between Regis and Kelly. I really hope everything goes smoothly and American viewers get Regis back as soon as possible. This guy is real busy and it seems like it’s time for him to slow down. He’s even busier than I am over at the Graywolf blog.

Hey Regis is already back to work.
Dear Regis,
We are happy to hear that you are feeling better. We say a prayer every day for your well being.
We try to watch your program every day. Not only do we watch your program but I think half of the people in Erie, Pa watch the program. They tell me that you mention my name when you call an
individual from Erie. The other half that you talk to are among the people who say they never
heard of me.
In 1996, I had the same operation that you
have had and it was no fun.
Sincerely,
Anthony Zambroski
Dear Regis,
Having this operation eleven years ago,I am
well aware of the depression that is part of the
recovery. People aren’t aware how horrifying this
depression is.
Hopefully you will not have to go through this
too long.
Sincerely,
Anthony Zambroski

I never knew Regis had angioplasty. I had angioplasty and was pleased with the outcome. I’m glad Regis’ outcome went just as well. We get to keep him around longer!
