The sketch came to the attention of Perth art dealer Paul Swain last week, when it was referred to him by the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

On first sight he believed it could be the work of da Vinci.

Mr Swain, who runs Perth’s Greenhill Gallery, is now travelling to the UK to consult experts at the Tate Gallery.

He then intends to have the paper carbon dated to see if it correlates with a date of around 1450, the time the Italian Master may have drawn it.

“All I am trying to do is to establish its credibility, get it carbon dated and take it one step at a time,” Mr Swain said.

“It’s in a tacky little frame, with very old glass on the front of it, but (when I saw it) I thought ‘Oh yeah, it actually could be’.

“I will get them to look at the image first to see if it looks legit, and then we’ll have the paper the drawing was drawn on carbon dated to pinpoint the era in which it was drawn.

“From there, we will take it to the real experts, in London and Paris and Italy, and get them to have a look at it.”

With the sketch being kept hidden from public view until authentication has taken place, Mr Swain would only say it is very similar to another sketch, Study of the Heads of an Old Man and a Youth.

“It is very similar, but a front view,” Mr Swain said.

The Perth family who own the sketch, and want to remain anonymous, have had the piece displayed at their home for generations, after it was brought to Australia from the UK early last century.

“The owner is a local guy, and it was given to a member of his mother’s family … a gift to her from someone who had a huge collection,” Mr Swain said.

“Apparently she did a favour for them and they said ‘Pick a piece from our collection’.

She picked the smallest piece because it would fit in her luggage to come home to Australia.

“She picked the smallest piece, which ended up being the most significant piece, and brought it out to Australia in her handbag – and it could turn out to be a da Vinci.”

The last da Vinci sketch to be sold at auction went for more than $22.5 million in July 2001 – more than double the expected amount.

Da Vinci’s Horse and Rider sketch was sold at Christie’s in London, and at the time equalled the world record price paid for an Old Master drawing.

Scary? It’s really not that difficult to make your own homemade gingerbread house. All you need is a gingerbread house recipe and the ingredients and you are on your way.

Gingerbread Dough Recipe

First let me say that, believe it or not there is more than one way to make gingerbread dough. The recipe that I’m giving you is the easiest one that I’ve seen.

Ingredients

• 6 cups all purpose flour
• 1 3/4 cups sugar
• 2/3 cups shortening
• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
• 1 tablespoon ground ginger
• 2 teaspoons double acting baking powder
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 8 ounce container of sour cream
• 2 eggs

Prepare Dough:Into large bowl, ,measure 3 1/2 cups flour and remaining ingredients. With mixer at low speed, beat until well mixed, constantly scraping bowl with rubber spatula. With hand, knead in remaining 2 1/2 cups flour to make a soft dough. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate 2 hours or until dough is not sticky and is of easy kneading consistency.

Roll Dough: Keep refrigerated until ready to use. Working with half of a batch at a time on a lightly floured work surface with lightly floured hands, knead dough until smooth. Then on a greased and floured 17″ x 14″ cookie sheet, with lightly floured rolling pin roll dough to 3/16″ or 1/8″ thickness. You can use dowels ofthe same size at either side of the dough on the cookie sheet to help create a uniform thickness. (For easy rolling, place cookie sheet on a damp cloth to prevent it from slipping.)

Cut And Bake Dough: Make your pattern pieces of heavy cardboard. Lay them on the dough and using a sharp knife use as many pieces as you can from the rolled dough on your cookie sheet, leaving at least 1/2″ inch between the pieces. Remove scraps and reserve for re rolling. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. (Place cookie sheet in the refrigerator if there is room while the oven preheats. Bake until golden brown and very firm when lightly touched with your finger. Remove cookie sheet from oven and cool on wire rack 5 minutes. Carefully remove the baked pieces from cookie sheet and place on wire rack to cool completely.

**hint – if any of your pieces need to be tweaked here or there…do it while the dough is still warm

Gingerbread Icing Recipe

Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons of Meringue Powder (you can get this wherever cake decorating supplies are sold)
• A 1lb pound of confectioner’s sugar (3 3/4 cups)
• 4-6 tablespoons of cold water

Combine all of the dry materials with half of the water (you will add more as needed to create the right thickness). Mix for about 2-3 minutes. The icing should be thick but not too thick that it won’t pass through a decorating tip.

Gingerbread House Construction Directions

Now that you have baked your house pieces separately you will need to put them all together and see whatcha got. For this you will need:

• A base – this could be cardboard, wood…really anything that will allow you enough room to place your house and have some landscape if desired **hint – cover your base with aluminum foil for easier removal (when the time comes)
• Your house pieces
• You glue – which is the icing

You pretty much use the icing as glue and start by running a line of glue down the end of one of your house sides. Then connect that side to the front of the house. Follow this up by connecting the other side the same way. Then connect the back of the house to your two sides.

You may choose to glue the four walls of the gingerbread house to your base. After that, attach the roof using the same method as the four walls…done.

Gingerbread House Decorating Ideas

How you choose to decorate your gingerbread house is up to you. You should have some idea of what you are going to put where to ensure that everything comes out just the way you want it.

Here are some gingerbread house decorating suggestions:

• Layer the roof with vanilla wafers or ginger snaps
• Use upside down ice cream cones as pine trees in the yard
• Use chocolate chips and peanut butter chips for walkways
• Use marshmallows in the yard to create a snowman
• Color coconut shavings with green food dye and sprinkle on the ground to create grass
• Use shredded wheat on the roof to create a thatch look
• Use your imagination and have fun

If all of this baking and mixing is too much for you (you’re not alone, believe me) but you still want an original looking gingerbread house I do have a solution for you. Get a gingerbread house kit that comes with the house and the icing and then go out and buy your own candy decorations.

There is nothing funner then going into the candy isle of a store and putting your imagination to good use as you think of which candies could be used in which ways. Be creative and have fun.

More than just fun, Plaster Fun Time is a pretty cheap kids activity. The plaster pieces start off at $7.99. The $7.99 pieces would be perfect for any child. I on the other hand found my perfect plaster piece on the $17.99 shelf. As much fun as getting your face painted. Just to give you an idea they have things like a Spiderman face, army tanks, every letter of the alphabet, cool looking sun and moon mirrors (there’s the dork again) and different shaped piggy banks.

To my surprise that is the only thing you have to pay for. Plaster Fun Time includes the cost of all the painting supplies in the price you pay for the plaster piece. Also you can stay for as long as it takes you to complete your work of art. My son was done in about a half hour where as it took me a bit longer…ok, it took me over an hour. Not as intricate of the sidewalk chalk drawings but still good craft fun.

Let’s Break It Down

For a small amount of money your child (and you) get to express their artistic side by painting whatever they choose from tons and tons of choices of plaster items. This painting is done outside of your home so you don’t have to worry about the mess that “your child” will make with the paint.

You get a huge selection of paint colors and you also get to wear a cool artist’s smock…I told you I’m a dork. Once you are done painting you hand your item off to one of the staff who gives you a finished looking glaze. Once that is done they put it in a cardboard tray for you to take home.

Oh My God I’m Famous!

There is a feature that Plaster Fun Time offers on their website which allows you to view your work of art. You just need to know the location you went to and the date you went there. While the staff is applying the finishing glaze to your work of art they also take a digital picture. All the pictures are available the next day in the Art Gallery section of the Plaster Fun Time website.

What was my kid’s reaction when I showed him his painted Spiderman online? Oh my god I’m famous! Now if he would only learn to make his own wood pens.
