The Perseids are among the most reliable of the year’s cosmic fireworks displays. In mid-August, Earth passes through a stream of grit left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle in its eccentric 130-year orbit. Flecks of debris burn up as they pass through the atmosphere, at a height of about 60 miles, producing streaks of light — and sometimes leaving behind glowing trails that fade into the night.

The Perseids are so called because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through a meteor stream. The stream in this case is called the Perseid cloud and it stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun.

Most of the dust in the cloud today is approximately a thousand years old. However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that boiled off the comet in 1862. The approximate rate of meteors originating from this filament is much higher than normal.

• Watch for Perseid meteors in the night skies from July 23rd to August 22nd.
• Get away from artificial light if possible.
• Dress appropriately for nighttime viewing. As a summer event, Perseids may be one of the few meteor showers you can observe in shirtsleeves.
• Look toward constellation Perseus for the radiant point of Perseid meteors. They’ll seem to come from that area, which is about halfway above the horizon in the northeast quadrant of the sky.
• Begin your search for Perseids after 10 p.m. (although the best viewing comes from midnight until dawn).
• Recline with your feet facing due south and look straight up. Perseids should appear to come from over your left shoulder.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the new-Moon night of Sunday–Monday, August 12–August 13 and can be seen from any place in the northern hemisphere. The Perseid meteors appear to stream away from their radiant near the border of Perseus and Cassiopeia.

The meteor rate, for an observer at a dark-sky site in the northern temperate latitudes, increases to roughly 30 per hour in the pre-dawn hours on Saturday, 45 per hour on Sunday morning, and 80 per hour before the sky starts to get light on Monday morning.

Over the next three months, more than 3,200 post offices and retail outlets out of 34,000 will be reviewed for possible closure or consolidation.

Downsizing is a business imperative, says Linda Welch, acting vice president of delivery and post office operations at the Postal Service. “Revenues have declined, and mail volume continues to decline,” she says.

Are These Post Offices Closing Because of the Recession?

Not only have e-mail and electronic bill paying made for a skinnier mail stream, but the recession has caused a sharp pullback in advertising mail that has hurt the Postal Service even more.

In March, Postmaster General John Potter asked Congress for the right to reduce the mail week from six days to five, for a savings of $3.5 billion. Shutting down post offices will have similar cost-saving effects. And most Americans say they’re OK with the cutbacks, as long as they don’t have to pay more to send mail. A recent USA Today/Gallup poll found that more Americans would rather the Postal Service curtail services than seek a bailout or raise stamp prices.

At least, that’s what everyone says until it’s their beloved post office at stake. For various reasons, people tend to react with great fervor when their local offices are endangered.

Consider the case of the Hawleyville Post Office. After years of negotiations, the Postal Service in January notified the Connecticut community that its 166-year-old post office would close Feb. 14. An article in the local newspaper poignantly noted, “The long love affair between the Hawleyville post office and its loyal customers will come to an end on, of all days, Valentine’s Day.”

Its post office was rickety, but the community embraced it as a gathering place. One resident told the Newtown Bee, “The Hawleyville Post Office is like Cheers in Hawleyville.”

In fear of losing its precious haunt, the community mobilized. A Web site and online petition drive were created. Members got Congress involved. And lo and behold, the community won approval for a new post office, to be opened this summer.

Every time a post office is slated for closure or consolidation, the Postal Service is legally obligated to inform its customers well in advance. “There’s a very long process that they have to go through,” says Mario Principe, the post office continuance consultant at the National League of Postmasters. That gives the communities plenty of time, usually at least two months, to stage a rescue.

Your Post Office is Closing. Get Used to It

The Postal Service will typically send out a survey or host a town hall meeting before an endangered office closes. Perhaps the closing of a post office means too many lost jobs for an already-hurting community. The office might house the bulletin board that posts important community announcements. Or the next-closest post office may be really far away. If customers alert officials to such concerns, there’s a better chance that their office will be spared. Appealing the closure decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission often works, too, though it’s a step many communities don’t know to take.

It’s also important to check out why a post office is on the chopping block in the first place. Those under review this summer are mostly metropolitan branches or stations. But in the case of small post offices, federal law states that the reason can’t be just that the office isn’t bringing in enough revenue. If that’s the only explanation given, then the Postal Service can’t legally shut it down.

Oftentimes, post offices face closure because their leases expire. That’s the case in Deer Harbor, Wash. After attempts to find a new location for the post office failed, the community decided “in desperation” to buy the property just to keep it in business. If the community can raise the $250,000 purchase price by the June 30, the Postal Service says it will continue operations there.

The Postal Service seems willing to negotiate, and it’s not really bothered by the protests. “It actually it makes us very proud to know that we are a valuable member of the community,” says Welch. She says that the Postal Service appreciates the great lengths that some communities will go to just to ensure that their services continue.

What the Postal Service would appreciate even more: If those people would show their appreciation by taking the simple step of sending more mail. Oddly enough, that seems to be the unthinkable last resort.

Poisonous Portuguese men-of-war, in an unusually large invasion, stung at least 14 people in Massachusetts during the last week, prompting periodic swimming bans on Cape and Islands beaches during one of the summer’s busiest holiday weeks.

Local and state officials say the intermittent beach closings may continue through Thursday, as the jellyfish-like creatures continue to wash up on beaches from Westport to Nantucket. However, they believe that shifting winds should carry the strange creatures, which are more common in tropical waters, back to sea after that.

None of the stings appear to be serious, although several people were taken to local hospitals for evaluation. Contact with a tentacle, which can dangle 50 feet below the surface, can bring painful welts that look like whip marks. Some people are allergic to the stings and, in extremely rare cases, they may cause anaphylactic shock, which can cause death.

Yesterday, Nantucket officials prohibited swimming on about 13 miles of south-facing beaches, but reopened much of the area in the afternoon, after winds died down and numbers of the creatures appeared to decline.

In Falmouth, Menauhant Beach was closed early in the day, but lifeguards later put up a sign that said swimming was allowed “at your own risk.”

Chapoquoit Beach in Falmouth also closed briefly when eight men-of-war washed up on the shore or were spotted near the beach.

“These are very dangerous creatures,” said Jeff Allen, a firefighter and lifeguard captain on Nantucket, where a young man was stung Sunday. Allen said no decision would be made on Fourth of July beach closures until this morning. He stressed that beachgoers still could swim on the north side of the island, where none of the organisms have been spotted.

Sunday on Nantucket, lifeguards reported about 100 of the animals in a 2-mile stretch on the west end of the island.

Beaches have been closed temporarily or warnings posted over the past week in Westport, Marion, Mattapoisett, Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard, and Little Compton, R.I. The creatures have also been spotted off South Beach in Edgartown, on Chappaquiddick, and along other areas of Southeastern Massachusetts, including in Buzzards Bay.

Beach officials have been educating beachgoers to be on the lookout for the blue, pink, or purple iridescent blobs floating on the surface. Some beach officials have also been stocking up on meat tenderizer, which is believed to ease the sting’s pain.

While a few dozen of the animals drift into local waters every year in late July, local marine biologists say they cannot remember a time when the creatures appeared so early or in such overwhelming numbers. In Westport on Friday, hundreds of the organisms were seen in the water and scattered on the shore, said Charlene Wood, town administrator.

Yesterday afternoon, actor Mark Wahlberg, who will play Lowell boxer Ward, met with scouts for the movie in the lobby of the Lowell DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Lowell to discuss possible locations to film scenes for the feature film.

Potential spots packing a punch in the discussion were Cupples Square in the Highlands section of Lowell, and, specifically, the Highland Tap barroom; the former Foxtail Lounge on Merrimack Street; the now-defunct Route 3 Cinema on Chelmsford Street, just over the line in Chelmsford; and Stevens Street a main thoroughfare in the Highlands where Ward, 43, grew up.

Talk of “dressing up” the Tsongas Arena for a fight scene was bandied about, and Lawrence, the other mill city just down the river, was mentioned, as well.

In addition to Wahlberg, who arrived at the hotel alone wearing sunglasses, Ward’s half-brother, Dicky Eklund, and Rich Farrell, the producer of the HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, were on hand talking with the scouts.

Actor Christian Bale is reportedly portraying Eklund in the movie, which follows Ward’s boxing career from the streets of Lowell and his rocky relationship with his trainer half brother. Eklund was once a professional fighter himself who fought Sugar Ray Leonard before his battles with addiction.

Filming is set to begin in Lowell this July and will take about seven weeks. The Fighter was originally to be directed by Darren Aronofsky of The Wrestler fame, but according to the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com., Aronofsky backed out and was replaced by David O. Russell, who directed I Heart Huckabees and previously worked with Wahlberg on Three Kings.

The Dorchester-born Wahlberg, 37, is the star of such movies as Boogie Nights, The Perfect Storm, Shooter and The Happening, and was nominated for best supporting actor for 2006’s The Departed.

Micky Ward’s final pro record was 38-13, with 27 knockouts.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects both the quality of sleep but also more importantly, the breathing process. While sleeping, the patient will stop breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer which will wake him up as he is struggling to breathe. These absences of breathing are called apnea. Usually the patient is unaware of these struggling episodes.

Is there more than one kind of sleep apnea?

Did you know that there are two types of sleep apnea? The first is called OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) which is caused by relaxed soft tissue blocking the passage of air during sleep.

The second type of sleep apnea is called CSA (central sleep apnea) which is caused by irregular signals from the brain that affect the breathing process. In some cases, patients suffer from a combination of both types of sleep apnea.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

The symptoms of sleep apnea are: suffering from excessive sleepiness during the day, having headaches in the morning, feeling irritable, being affected by mood changes, suffering from anxiety, being affected by depression, becoming forgetful, snoring loud and gasp for air, having restless sleep, having trouble to concentrate and even falling asleep during the day. Please note that these symptoms vary from one person to the next. Also be aware that the severity of the symptoms and the combination of symptoms vary from one patient to the next.

A bit of history

Did you know that the first case of sleep apnea that was diagnosed happened only in 1965? This is a bit odd when you consider that so many people are affected by this sleep disorder. At first, only people suffering from certain health conditions such as congestive heart failure were diagnosed with sleep apnea. It was also noticed that problems related to sleep apnea happened following surgery particularly in people that are overweight, obese or had short necks. It was later on proven that while they were noticed in these particular cases, sleep apnea does not only affect people suffering from these conditions or displaying these specific characteristics.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

This type of sleep apnea seems more common in people that have a soft palate or other abnormalities such the ones related to the jaw, people who are obese or consume alcohol. Did you know that 2% of female and 4% of males diagnosed with a mild case of sleep apnea stop breathing at least ten times per hour?

To evaluate the severity of sleep apnea in a patient, the specialist will evaluate it by using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). If a patient has less than 5 apneas per hour, it is considered normal. If it is between 5 and 15 it is mild, if it is between 15 and 30 it is moderate and over 30 is considered severe.

Also, the approximate time for each apnea (breathing interruption) is usually about 10 seconds but in more severe cases, it can reach 60 seconds.

In certain cases, sleep apnea can be cause by an external situation such as an accident, family problems, heart problems and narcolepsy. It was also held responsible either partially or totally for SIDS also known as sudden infant death syndrome.

How can it be diagnosed?

Sleep apnea is evaluated in a sleep laboratory. The patient spends the night in this laboratory and is closely monitored by both a technician with visual instruments as well as various medical resources that will also verify the level of oxygen in the blood, the breathing pattern as well as the activity of the brain.

What are the available treatments?

Well, according to the severity of the sleep apnea, a single type of treatment may help while some cases may require a combination of treatments. The available treatments are: medication, avoid antidepressants or relaxants, avoid alcohol, change of diet, quit smoking, surgery to enlarge the airways, devices to keep the patient from sleeping on his back, special pillows, oral devices and the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) which is a machine that uses a tube connected to a mask and sends continuous pressurized air to keep the airways open.

Can sleep apnea be fatal?

Sleep apnea can lead to death as it takes a huge toll on the body and affects other systems which can lead to fatal situations such as a heart attack, congestive heart failure, a stroke or the patient may fall asleep while driving for example and have a tragic accident.

It is important to know that while people between 65 and 100 years of age or that are overweigh are more susceptible to suffer from sleep apnea but it still can affect people that are not overweight, infants and children as well. That is why if you have any doubts concerning a close relative, a friend or even yourself, see a doctor as treated sleep apnea cannot only improve your quality of life but also give you the opportunity to live a long and happy life.

Federal and state law enforcement officials on Wednesday said they’re still hunting for the fugitive, an alleged killer who ran drug and gambling rings. In 2005, leads and look-a-likes were investigated in at least 19 countries.

“The public should be assured that we remain committed to leaving no stone unturned in the hunt for James Bulger,” U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, Boston FBI Special Agent in Charge Kenneth Kaiser, State Police Superintendent Col. Thomas Robbins and state Department of Correction Commissioner Kathleen Dennehy said in a prepared statement.
In the past decade, Bulger has been “spotted” all over the U.S., as well as in Canada, Britain, Mexico. Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. But most of the reported sightings were people who look like Bulger, a balding, 76-year-old man who could blend in anywhere.

Bulger, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, was also an FBI informant who ratted out his competitors in the Italian Mafia. He disappeared in late December 1994 after being tipped by his FBI handler, John Connolly, that he was about to be indicted on racketeering charges.

Connolly is now serving a 10-year prison for warning Bulger and his cohort Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi to flee in advance of their January 1995 indictment.

In December 2004, authorities held a news conference to mark the 10th anniversary of Bulger’s disappearance and to highlight their efforts to find him. That year, agencies combined their efforts with state police and formed a single Bulger Fugitive Task Force.

Bulger is on the FBI’s “Most Wanted” list, alongside Osama bin Laden, and has a $1 million reward on his head. His “Most Wanted” poster is offered in six languages.

Investigators believe Bulger is traveling with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, 54.

That common belief was underscored late last week by none other than Vice President Joe Biden. “When one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft,” he declared on NBC’s “Today” show.

Air Travel Sickness Bags Aren't Enough

It’s no surprise that people worry about getting sick every time they fly. Not only do planes ferry sick people to new locales where diseases can gain a foothold, but they put passengers in what seems like a hotbed of germs, with no way out.

“Whenever you put that many people that close together, the issue of disease transmission is going to be of concern,” said Byron Jones, a mechanical engineer at Kansas State University who studies airplane ventilation in his laboratory, which includes 11 rows of a Boeing 767 airline cabin.

But don’t despair if the guy four rows ahead sneezes. Scientific studies show that contrary to popular belief, germs and other contaminants don’t travel the length of the plane, infecting everyone. And there are steps you can take to minimize your risk of catching something.

“We have close to 2 billion people traveling by air annually, and we don’t hear of these huge outbreaks as a result of the air travel,” said Dr. Mark Gendreau, senior staff physician at Lahey Clinic and author of a recent study on medical issues on flights in the medical journal The Lancet.

The risk of onboard transmission of infection is mainly restricted to individuals with either personal contact, or seated within two rows of an infected passenger on flights longer than eight hours, according to Gendreau’s 2005 study that reviewed the available literature on infectious disease on planes.

In his new study, Gendreau reviewed the literature on diseases that spread on planes, finding incidents where everything from flu to measles to food poisoning have become mile-high contagions. But it’s important to remember, he said, that the cabin ventilation systems have been designed to minimize risk. There is evidence that when they are working properly, they do just that.

Typically, airplane air – about half from outside and half recycled after being passed through filters – enters at the top of the cabin. From there, the ventilation system keeps it from flowing forward and backward in the plane, limiting it mostly to the immediate row, before exiting through grilles in the cabin floor.

One study illustrates the importance of ventilation by showing what happens when it’s not in operation: On a 1979 flight, nearly three quarters of the passengers contracted influenza within 72 hours. The reason, researchers found, was probably because passengers sat on board for three hours with a broken ventilation system while repairs were done.

Other studies seem to show that our fears of catching cold on a plane may be overblown. A study of 155 travelers found they were probably infected before their flights: An analysis of the bacteria and viruses they harbored showed that few travelers had the same pathogens, and there were no links between pathogens and specific airports.

Plane infection has been studied sporadically, and often when outbreaks occur. But the issue is attracting more scientific interest. This fall, a two-day symposium is planned on the transmission of disease in airports and on planes by the National Academy of Sciences.

Studies have shown that numerous supplements do not prevent the flu. Last year, the maker of the popular supplement Airborne paid $23.3 million in a class action lawsuit, for making claims without sufficient evidence that the product could prevent colds.

But there are things passengers can do to protect themselves.

What’s most important on the plane is the same as on the ground. Passengers should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, or mouth during the flight and to wash their hands or use a sanitizing gel.

Infection occurs when viruses or bacteria are sprayed from infected people in droplets from a cough or sneeze. The pathogens can then be picked up when passengers touch their tray table or the arm of their seat, and then rub their eye.

People should also be sure to stay hydrated in the arid cabin environment.

Then there is a somewhat more creative theory of how to prevent getting sick on board by using the nozzle that sprays a jet of cool air onto passengers.

Gendreau said he turns the nozzle to a medium air flow and points it in front of his “face space,” with the idea of creating turbulence that could jettison any stray microbes.

Jones, the mechanical engineer at Kansas State, is officially skeptical about whether directing the nozzle’s air flow is an effective way to deter disease, calling it a bit of “false security.” But he admitted that he uses the same technique when someone on the plane is sneezing or coughing.

He also said that in picking a seat, common sense prevails.

“Nobody likes that center seat – you’ve got people on both sides of you,” Jones said. “There’s no magic there.”

In general, people shouldn’t fly when they are sick, whether it is an infectious disease or a recent surgery.

Gendreau said that he frequently writes notes to the airlines for his patients when it is not appropriate for them to fly, and that people are usually given vouchers to fly at a later time.

Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that people who are sick or experiencing flu-like symptoms should not be flying.

But even in the throes of swine flu, healthy people have no reason to avoid flying.

“I think flying is safe, getting on the subway is safe,” Besser said. “People should go out and live their lives.”

For Tammy and two other Iraq war veterans I will tell you about in a moment, winning won’t be easy. You and I both know how Rove-style Republicans treat veterans who speak the truth. They think that men and women who dare to speak up somehow forfeit their right to be honored for their brave service to America. And they’ve proven time and time again that they won’t hesitate to distort a veteran’s record, to challenge a veteran’s courage, or even to question a veteran’s patriotism.

I know something firsthand about the Swift Boat-style Republican attack ads of the last election – but you don’t have to take my word for it.

Just ask John McCain. Ask Max Cleland. Ask Jack Murtha.

The other two Iraq war veterans I want you to know about are running in tight congressional races in the pivotal state of Pennsylvania. Patrick Murphy, the working-class son of a police officer, has been deployed twice to serve our nation since 9/11 – first to Bosnia, then to Baghdad.

He was a professor at West Point, teaching constitutional law, and we could use his fine intellect and principled character at work in Washington. But, first we have to help him defeat Republican Mike Fitzpatrick, who has been a rubber stamp for George W. Bush and a devoted follower of Tom DeLay.

Joe Sestak has served America in the White House and on the battlefield. He worked for President Clinton as Director of Defense Policy. And, as a Vice Admiral, he led an Aircraft Carrier Battle Group of 30 ships and 15,000 men and women in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Joe wants to bring the accountability he learned in the military to Congress where it is sorely lacking. You can help him do it by acting right now.

In 3 months, voters across the Commonwealth will head to the polls for the critically important 2006 election. It has been 20 years — far too long — since we elected a Democratic governor here at home. Massachusetts, like so much of the country, is ready for a change.

That’s why the Democratic Coordinated Campaign in Massachusetts has organized a series of cookouts in support of Massachusetts Victory ‘06, the impressive grassroots organization that we Democrats are building to help Democratic candidates win in 2006. Several cookouts have already been held, and a dozen more are planned throughout the Commonwealth that you can sign up for today.

I’ll be at the Lexington grassroots cookout on Sunday, August 13 to show my support for Massachusetts Victory ‘06, and I hope you can join me. Already this month, in every region of the state, hundreds of precinct captains and volunteers are engaging in door-to-door canvasses, phone banks, house parties, and cookouts, spreading the Democratic message. With your help and participation, we can further build this program and strengthen the fall campaign effort.

I know what incredible things you can do when you join together at the grassroots level. I saw it throughout the 2004 campaign when you knocked on doors, picked up the phones, passed the hat, and helped us turn out a tremendous vote for Democrats in the general election. I am convinced that you can make that same extraordinary impact this year.

We are less than a month away from Harpoon Helps Spread Holiday Cheer . On Saturday, December 1st, we will be again be sending Harpoon Helpers to 25 different locations in Boston to decorate and spread good tidings to those who need it the most. We are still looking for volunteers to come help us decorate and invite you to sign up yourself or a group today. After a couple of hours decorating, everyone will return to our Boston brewery for some food and fresh Harpoon beers! We hope that you will join us for our biggest Harpoon Helps mission of the year!

These gift cards will enable parents in the family shelters to go out and purchase gifts for their kids – so they are able to give something that they choose.

• Rock & Art Charity Auction at Boston Opera House – Rock & Art is a Bank of America Pavilion program that pairs visual artists with national touring musicians. This fall, Live Nation will host a charity auction at the Opera House on November 15th at which all paintings will be offered for sale with proceeds benefiting Action for Boston Community Development and Artists For Humanity. Friends of Harpoon can get half price tickets.
