Mark Wahlberg in Lowell To Film Micky Ward Movie – The Fighter

Finally, the “Irish” Micky Ward movie The Fighter is a reality and it’s filming right here in Lowell.

Yesterday afternoon, actor Mark Wahlberg, who will play Lowell boxer Ward, met with scouts for the movie in the lobby of the Lowell DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Lowell to discuss possible locations to film scenes for the feature film.

Potential spots packing a punch in the discussion were Cupples Square in the Highlands section of Lowell, and, specifically, the Highland Tap barroom; the former Foxtail Lounge on Merrimack Street; the now-defunct Route 3 Cinema on Chelmsford Street, just over the line in Chelmsford; and Stevens Street a main thoroughfare in the Highlands where Ward, 43, grew up.

Talk of “dressing up” the Tsongas Arena for a fight scene was bandied about, and Lawrence, the other mill city just down the river, was mentioned, as well.

In addition to Wahlberg, who arrived at the hotel alone wearing sunglasses, Ward’s half-brother, Dicky Eklund, and Rich Farrell, the producer of the HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, were on hand talking with the scouts.

Actor Christian Bale is reportedly portraying Eklund in the movie, which follows Ward’s boxing career from the streets of Lowell and his rocky relationship with his trainer half brother. Eklund was once a professional fighter himself who fought Sugar Ray Leonard before his battles with addiction.

Filming is set to begin in Lowell this July and will take about seven weeks. The Fighter was originally to be directed by Darren Aronofsky of The Wrestler fame, but according to the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com., Aronofsky backed out and was replaced by David O. Russell, who directed I Heart Huckabees and previously worked with Wahlberg on Three Kings.

The Dorchester-born Wahlberg, 37, is the star of such movies as Boogie Nights, The Perfect Storm, Shooter and The Happening, and was nominated for best supporting actor for 2006′s The Departed.

Micky Ward’s final pro record was 38-13, with 27 knockouts.

Reasons Why You Should NOT Buy a Plasma Television

The Superbowl draws near and you want to see the big game in high definition television (HDTV) but you’re unsure about which type of HDTV television you should buy? If you open up your local consumer electronics flyer, the choice is clear – Plasma.

Here’s 5 Reasons Not to Buy a Plasma TV this Superbowl Season.

The purpose of the article was to provide a counterpoint to some of the misinformation being advertised prior to the Superbowl by various retailers and was not a blanket condemnation of Plasma televisions.

For reasons why you should buy a Plasma check out our May 2005 article entitled – Five Reasons to make your next HDTV a Plasma

Plasma televisions are sleek, sexy and can hang on a wall. In addition to a slim space saving design, Plasma’s offer a wide viewing angle, uniform screen brightness and good colour fidelity. What’s not to love?

Plasma televisions are flat-panel displays that consist of millions of phosphor-coated miniature glass bubbles containing plasma. Each bubble represents one pixel. To produce an image on the plasma panel, electric current flows through the screen which causes the gas inside the glass bubbles to emit ultraviolet rays. The ultraviolet rays then trigger the phosphor coating to produce red, green or blue light.

The number of physical bubbles or pixels inside a plasma television determines the sets Native resolution. DHC recommends you determine the native resolution of any plasma you’re thinking about purchasing. Native resolution is important because it is the source of a tremendous amount of confusion in the minds of consumers which leads to a very common misperception.

The common misperception is that all Plasma televisions are high definition televisions. Instead of being HDTV sets, many plasma sets are Enhanced Definition television (EDTV). If the native resolution of the plasma you are considering is 853 X 480 or something similar then the plasma panel is NOT a high definition television.

Digital Home Canada has learned that many websites and retail flyers are no longer publishing the native resolution of plasma panels preferring to simply say the set has 720p or 1080i capability.

For more information about the different types of HDTV televisions available in the marketplace be sure to read HDTV Canada – Types of Televisions Explained . To learn more about HDTV visit the HDTV Canada section of this site. or visit one of Digital Home Canada’s HDTV forums in the Digital Forums.
Five Reasons not to buy Plasma
The following are five reasons why Digital Home Canada believes you shouldn’t buy a Plasma television.

Burn In
Burn in occurs when a static image, such as a network icon, is continuously shown and the image is “burned into” the screen. The result is that “burned in” image is visible even when watching other programs.

The actual term burn in is a misnomer (to find out more burn in – click on some of the links listed above) since the screen isn’t actually burned but the unpleasant image left of your screen is all too real.

The effects of burn in on a plasma display are permanent and cannot be erased.

The article and plasma manufacturers go to great lengths to explain how to reduce the likelihood of burn and with proper care and attention DHC agrees that a very determined and careful consumer can avoid the problem.

Although we understand that burn in can be avoided if you are very careful, our attitude is “Do you want really want to buy a $5,000 to $10,000 television set and then constantly worry that it will become an expensive doorstop, because you or your kids, left it on for a few hours on the “wrong” channel ?”

When spending $10,000, we want piece of mind. The risk of burn in is the first reason we would not recommend buying a plasma television.

Too Expensive
True HDTV Plasma’s starts around $6,000 Canadian and go up from there. Many 50″ plasma’s are close to $10,000.

An excellent quality 50″ CRT rear projection television can be had for $2,000, while DLP & LCD projection sets retails for approximately $4,000.

With the extra $6,000 to $8,000 dollars you save by not buying plasma, you could outfit your home with a stunning home theatre system which includes six good quality speakers, DVD player, A/V receiver and more.

The high cost of plasma is the second reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
Costly to Repair and Higher Incidence of Repair
Recently when Digital Home Canada was researching our article Should I buy the Extended Warranty? we were surprised to learn the price for an 2 or 3 year extended warranty on a plasma television was much higher than the cost of a 2 or 3 year warranty on a direct view, LCD, CRT or DLP television after adjusting for the purchase price of the product.

Extended warranty costs are an excellent way to gauge the reliability of a consumer product. If the premiums being asked by the insurance companies are higher, then it indicates the product has a higher rate of repair and failure.

Also noteworthy is that despite the high cost of extended warranties on plasma, burn in is not covered by either the manufacturer’s warranty or an extended warranty. Burn in is considered to consumer misuse and therefore not covered.

The high cost of repair, potential for failure and the lack of a comprehensive warranty is the third reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
Standard Definition Television looks terrible
The next time you are shopping for a television, be sure to take notice of what’s playing on those Plasma panels. We can pretty much guarantee, you won’t see a regular standard definition cable signal.

In our experience, HDTV looks beautiful on a true HDTV plasma panel and DVD’s can almost equally compelling, however, standard television, the stuff you watch everyday, generally looks horrible!

The reason for this poor quality image can be attributable to a number of factors including the stretch mode of the television or the poor quality of the analog or digital signal.

Regardless of the reason, Digital Home Canada we have yet to view a standard definition television program on plasma that we would want to watch in our home.

Despite our opinion, DHC learned long ago that picture quality is a very subjective matter. What looks great to one person can look lousy to someone else.

We recommend that if you’re considering buying a plasma, take the time to watch “regular” television on it before you purchase the set or only use your plasma to watch DVD’s or HDTV.

The poor picture quality of Standard definition signals is the fourth reason why we would not buy a plasma television.

Costly and Time Consuming to Mount on a wall
Since the first Phillips commercial in 2001 showing consumers how they could mount a plasma television on the wall, people have dreamt of hanging their televisions on the wall.

Like every dream, get over it!

The reality is that most plasma sets are never hung on walls. Typically they sit on a tabletop on a stand. A stand, that is as deep and wide as an DLP or LCD projection television set.

Why don’t plasma owners have the set up on the wall?

The primary reason is the wires. A typical plasma set has a ton of connections. component or DVI cables from your cable or satellite receiver, component or DVI cables from your DVD player, other audio cables to and from your A/V receivers, and of course the power cable.

The wires can be neatly tucked and hidden behind the set when it sits on a stand. In our opinion, placing a plasma on a tabletop defeats one of the major reasons people buy the set in the first place.

Finally, if you want to mount the plasma panel on the wall and still have it look attractive, you need to fish cables through your walls. Fishing cables means drilling holes and feeding wires which can be messy, costly and time consuming.

The huge effort and high cost of properly mounting a plasma to a wall is the fifth reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
An Extra Reason – It’s not HDTV! (most times)
Our last and potentially sixth reason for not buying a plasma is that often the plasma set is not a high definition television.

It is true that many plasma models offer a native resolution which allows owners to watch true HDTV, however, the problem is the majority of units sold are EDTV sets marketed as being HDTV capable.

Many angry plasma owners and ex-owners have told us they felt deceived when they found out that their EDTV set wasn’t an HDTV television.

Until the manufacturers and sellers of these products clearly articulate this information and stop selling them as HDTV capable, we believe it is a significant disadvantage when buying one of these televisions.

Micky Ward Movie Gets Ready to Shoot In October. Will it Shoot In Lowell?

micky-wardAfter two years in development, Mark Wahlberg and Darren Aronofsky’s long gestating boxing biopic on underdog champion Irish Micky Ward is finally going to begin shooting in October, the star told MTV News.

“I’ve been training for two years now. I’m ready,” he said. “I want to look like a champ, not a chump.”

Yes, there have been many classic movies to center on the sport, Wahlberg admits, and, yes, he told us last year, he’d of course like it to hold up to “Raging Bull,” the undisputed champion of the genre.

But Mark Wahlberg has more than just a few moves to his credit these days, he’s also got a healthy dose of fighting words for anybody who thinks that what the world needs least right now is another boxing movie.

But ultimately, his performance as Micky Ward in “The Fighter” is for an audience of one, he said smiling — Micky Ward.

“I want to do him proud. The guy did everything I wish I could have done. He came from nothing, went on to win the world title with all the odds stacked against him. Did it with his mother and his brother,” Wahlberg grinned. “He’s still in the same town to this day. He’s got a regular job. He knows that I’m going to put it all on the line for him. Mickey Ward is going to be [on set, watching me] every single day.” Continue reading

Mel Gibson Tells Diane Sawyer He’s 65 Days Sober

Mel Gibson calls his anti-Semitic rant following his arrest for drunk driving in July “the stupid ramblings of a drunkard.” In an interview with Diane Sawyer set to air on “Good Morning America” on Thursday and Friday, Gibson says that though staying sober is a struggle, he has not had a drink in 65 days.

He adds that he plans to continue making movies and working to heal himself and those he offended.

“All you can do is take another step, keep breathing,” he says, according to a partial transcript of the interview released by ABC.

Clean shaven and casually dressed in jeans and a blue checkered shirt, Gibson tells Sawyer he began drinking two months before sheriff’s deputies arrested him in Malibu on July 28. Maybe he should have tried to improve his bedroom environment.

“Years go by, you’re fine,” he says. “And then all of a sudden in a heartbeat, in an instant, on an impulse, somebody shoves a glass of Mescal in front of your nose and says, “It’s from Oaxaca.” And it’s burning its way through your esophagus and you go, “Oh man, what did I do that for? I can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.”

The interview with Sawyer is the first time Gibson has spoken to the media since sparking a scandal by unleashing what he later called “vitriolic and harmful words” during his arrest. Gibson told the arresting officer: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” and asked him, “Are you a Jew?”

Death of a President Film About George W Bush’s Assassination

A controversial British drama about the fictional assassination of President George W. Bush has been applauded following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada.
Death of a President, which shows Bush shot dead in Chicago in 2007, was recently slammed as “irresponsible” and “horrible” by American politicians.

However, director Gabriel Range claims critics are judging the film unfairly as they have yet to see it.

He says, “I think the film makes it clear it would really be a horrific event. I really don’t think that anyone would get the idea of assassinating Bush from this film.”

He adds, “It is using the lens of the future to look at the present. It is about issues that have affected us all in the last five years. It is a film about America today.

“The central conceit of the film was that it is a drama, but told in the style of what we hope is a fairly authentic, classic, retrospective documentary. Clearly, if we had told a retrospective documentary with a fictional president, it would have undermined and undercut that central idea.”

What’s New with Windows Media Player 11

Windows Media player 11 looks very different to earlier versions of windows media player. This is because it has been designed with Windows Vista in mind. At this time it is not certain if Windows media player 11 will be available before Windows Vista is released. The application does function perfectly fine within Windows XP, but the GUI design does make it look a little out of place.

The New GUI has been designed with the Windows Vista appearance very much in mind. I understand the application will be sinkable when the final version is released.

Windows media player 11 has an entire interface tab dedicated to connection to portable devices. It is clear that Microsoft still have keen plans and ambitions when it comes to the Apple iPod dominated world of portable media.

Microsoft have long been involved in the software side of portable MP3 players such as the iRiver and Zen media devices. This clear and simple to use interface will certainly make it a lot easier to link up your portable media to the PC. Microsoft will see this as a clear way to entice users to the recently revamped MSN music store. Portable media has proven to be a huge market in recent years.

Windows media player 11 also makes it a lot easier to rip your conventional media from CD form to MP3 format. Microsoft have introduced their Digital rights management into Media player 11 and you can use this to control the distribution of your media. It is interesting to note you can check a ox to have windows ignore your reproduction of music. It is however recommended that you use this feature to control how many copies you can make of your original purchases. Continue reading

Ice Age Movie – NOT for Kids

Ice Age 2Ice Age: The Meltdown is a pure sequel product that should make children and undemanding grown-ups happy even as it lacks anything resembling storytelling inspiration. Atleast for kids over about 6 years old. Anyone inclined to take the longer view may scratch his head and wonder why a kiddie movie is the only place our culture is willing to talk about global warming.

Ice Age. Yep, meteorological apocalypse is the dramatic engine of ”Meltdown” (are you ready for your Happy Meal?). The glaciers are retreating, oceans are breaking out everywhere, and all the baroque Pleistocene critters are rushing for the safety of a giant tree trunk ”ark” before a massive ice dam bursts and floods their valley.

Amid the glyptodonts, aurochs, and giant anteaters are a few familiar faces: Manny the mammoth (voice of Ray Romano), Sid the giant sloth (John Leguizamo), and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary). These three form their own pack, although Manny is mad over the fact that he’s probably the last of his kind. Continue reading

Clerks 2: Silent Bob is Forever Silent?

Hey anyone know where I can get some Clerks 2 Ringtones or Jay and SIlent Bob ringtones?

Writer/director Kevin Smith is currently in production on the sequel to the indie cult smash hit film Clerks. As you may know, he’s been documenting the whole experience with video diaries (two a week actually). Well this week’s videos hit that web only to have fanboys shocked to discover a storyboarded sequence featuring the funeral for beloved View Askew character Silent Bob. Will Silent Bob die in Clerks 2?

According to fans, a Silent Bob statue appears in the storyboards engraved with “FOREVER SILENT“. Within a few hours, the video in question entitled “The Boards,” was mysteriously removed from the website (Clerks2.com).

Also revealed in the video were storyboards for a space battle sequence: “Yeah, yeah, like in Battlestar Galactica.” So could this whole video be a joke by funny man Smith? Or could these storyboards be part of a big budget dream sequence? Or will Silent Bob really bite the big one? And if not, why was the video removed from the website?

I guess we’ll have to wait to find out..
