The aging, crass shock jock who ruled mornings on FM radio in Boston and elsewhere took his act to Sirius Satellite Radio, the number-two player in the subscription radio business, on Jan. 9 2005.

Judging by the subscriptions he now has and how much he mentions WBCN, he took a lot of Boston fans with him.

Several store managers said Sirius receivers, which cost between $50 and $300, come with a $12.95 monthly fee, and have to be plugged into a car or home stereo, are among their hottest sellers this holiday season. Stern fans and their gift-buying relatives are cleaning out shelves as quickly as they are stocked with new units.

”This is driving our revenue right now,” said Anthony Perry, a manager at Best Buy in the Fenway neighborhood. ”If we could stock a million of these, I’m sure we’d sell a million,” added general manager Gary Oliveira.

Satellite radio launched in the United States in 2001, when Sirius’ only competitor, XM Satellite Radio Inc., went on the air. Instead of listening to free radio stations subject to Federal Communications Commission decency rules, filled with commercials and marked by formulaic, repetitive playlists, satellite subscribers pay for commercial-free no-holds barred programs. Unlike traditional radio stations, which have a limited listening area, satellite stations are available anywhere in the country.

Sirius and XM offer more than 100 channels of music, news, and talk and rely heavily on celebrity hosts to drive subscriptions. XM’s latest TV ads feature rapper Snoop Dogg dropping in on Ellen DeGeneres in the company’s studios. Both host XM shows.

Sirius’ roster includes an entire channel named for rapper Eminem, and the company benefited immediately from landing Stern.

”We attribute a lot of that to the Stern effect,” said Jim Collins, a Sirius spokesman.

Stern could end up benefiting both companies, neither of which has ever had a host with such a big audience, said Stuart Kagel, an analyst with Janco Partners, a Greenwood Village, Colo., investment firm.

”The awareness of satellite radio is way above where it was before,” Stern signed with Sirius, he said. Kagel’s most recent report on Sirius projects an estimated 39 million satellite radio subscribers in the United States by 2010.

Its popularity is already growing. Of a shipment of 48 of Sirius’ least expensive receivers the Fenway Best Buy received last week, only three of the $49.99 radios remained yesterday afternoon.

As Perry was describing how quickly the radios are selling, another manager snatched one off the shelf for a customer who placed an order on the Internet and rushed in to pick it up.

Once XM and Sirius merge together it will be Mel Karmazin who is currently the Chief Executive for Sirius Satellite leading the combined entity. Hugh Panero, the Chief Executive Officer for XM, will remain in place only until this deal is finalized.

Because of the FCC, the merger between XM and Sirius will run into hurdles in Washington. The Provision in place states that the two companies are forbidden to combine. The FCC could change the rule but there was a statement given by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin in which he said “The companies would need to demonstrate that consumers would clearly be better off with both more choice and affordable prices”. Kevin Martin went on to state that “the hurdle would be high to prove that the deal would be in the public interest”.

Wonder what Howard Stern or Opie and Anthony think about this merger and how the 2 radio shows will now be somewhat of business partners rather than enemies now.

XM and Sirius will also need to get antitrust approval from the Department of Justice. The argument which will be used is that XM and Sirius not only compete with each other but with traditional radio as well as ipods, mobile phones and digital radio.

So what is the name of the new entity? There isn’t one yet. A statement was made that both XM and Sirius would work together in coming up with both a new name and also deciding where the new entity will be located and also who is going to sell XM and Sirius radios to listen to the satellite feed.

The National Association of Broadcasters, which is a group representing radio companies, is speaking out to the federal regulators asking them to block the deal between XM and Sirius.

Carl Blaze, born Carlos Rivera, was shot outside an apartment building near Manhattan’s Inwood section on December 7, and his $20,000 diamond chain was stolen, police said. He was taken to Harlem Hospital Center, where he died Saturday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time,” said Josefa Paganuzzi, a Clear Channel spokeswoman. Power 105.1 FM was holding a tribute for Blaze on Saturday night. The station is owned by Clear Channel Communications.

Police said the investigation into the shooting was ongoing.

A native of Kennett, Mo. (also the hometown of Sheryl Crow) Trent Tomlinson scored with his first single, “Drunker Than Me,” a based-in-fact, humorous ode to a woman who drank more than he did on a date.

While the song peaked at No. 19 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, it received enough airplay to be heard by Andrea Ownbey, a former stripper who holds the dubious distinction of being known as “Miss Howard Stern.” Stern and his crew became aware of Trent Tomlinson’s single when Ownbey sang it at a karaoke contest.

When Trent Tomlinson heard about Ownbey’s performance, he offered to travel to New York to sing a duet with her on Stern’s show.

The Sirius Satellite Radio appearance was a success. Trent Tomlinson says Stern was “a class act. We really hit if off,” he says. “It was like we were two peas in a pod.”

After the July appearance, sales of his Lyric Street debut, “Country Is My Rock,” shot up more than 50 percent. Coupled with the airplay of his current single, “One Wing in the Fire” (which he wrote about his father) sales have remained steady ever since. The single is No. 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Trent Tomlinson’s father, Don, is a former college basketball star who was drafted by the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers before knee surgery knocked him out. He was also a basketball coach and biology teacher at Kennett High School. His problems with alcohol inspired “One Wing in the Fire.”

“In the eyes of our town he was a great guy,” Trent Tomlinson says of his father, who is still living. “But none of those people knew what kind of guy he was when he’d had alcohol and came home.”

Although the younger Tomlinson resented his father’s behavior at the time, he later forgave him. “Once I got thinking about heaven and hell, I realized, what would heaven be without being able to see my dad there? So I wrote this song pleading to God for my dad to go to heaven.”

When Tomlinson played the song at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe one night, his father was in the audience. “He gave me a one-man standing ovation,” Tomlinson says. “It was awesome.”

The song became a bridge between the two men. “We have a better relationship now than we’ve ever had,” Tomlinson says. And while he initially worried about airing his family’s dirty laundry by recording the song, he decided, “It’s my life.”

In fact, Trent Tomlinson says that it wasn’t until he started writing about his own life experiences that his songs began to connect with people.

“How can you expect someone to believe and buy what you’re doing unless you believe it yourself?” he asks. “There’s a lot of things I don’t know about, but what I do know about is my life.”

The yin and the yang of “Drunker Than Me” (”I can’t be with a woman, baby, who gets drunker than me”) and “One Wing in the Fire” (”He’s an angel with no halo and one wing in the fire”) typifies Trent Tomlinson’s album, which alternates between rousing rockers and thoughtful ballads. He wrote or co-wrote all 11 songs on the record.

Meanwhile, Trent Tomlinson is the best-selling solo country artist debut this year to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, with 87,000 copies sold. In addition, he recently scored a coup with “Why Can’t I Leave Her Alone,” a song he co-wrote intending to record himself. He was beaten to the punch by country superstar

Diddy’s fourth album, “Press Play” (Bad Boy/Atlantic), hits shops on Tuesday. It ranges from “The Future,” an oddly dour track produced by Havoc of Mobb Deep, to “Last Night,” which Diddy sings — sings! — alongside Keyshia Cole. The best songs surround Diddy’s clumsy verses with inventive beats: Timbaland helps concoct the moody, mechanical-sounding “After Love”; Mario Winans creates an airy double-speed rhythm for “Thought You Said,” featuring Brandy. The worst ones lean too heavily on Diddy’s rhymes or, more wincingly, his lyrics.

Microsoft have long been involved in the software side of portable MP3 players such as the iRiver and Zen media devices. This clear and simple to use interface will certainly make it a lot easier to link up your portable media to the PC. Microsoft will see this as a clear way to entice users to the recently revamped MSN music store. Portable media has proven to be a huge market in recent years.

Windows media player 11 also makes it a lot easier to rip your conventional media from CD form to MP3 format. Microsoft have introduced their Digital rights management into Media player 11 and you can use this to control the distribution of your media. It is interesting to note you can check a ox to have windows ignore your reproduction of music. It is however recommended that you use this feature to control how many copies you can make of your original purchases.

Windows media player still retains it’s well knows interface and usage when it comes to creating and managing play lists. The application will also keep your song data up to date my downloading the latest information from the web as you add new music to your collection. Te system also attempts to automatically file your music into genres although I found this to be far from perfect, or perhaps everyone has a slightly different option on how music should be sorted.

There is however one very important feature that I feel is missing. Media player still doesn’t support pod casting. This is one feature that couch truly turn media player into a truly useful tool.

Media player 11 still continues to support minimising to the familiar compacted version with the basic controls available.

There are certainly areas that I feel need to be improved, for example I believe it uses a lot of system resources when simply playing MP3’s. Another annoyance is the close button, because by default the application runs in full screen mode, when you go to close the app it is very easy to miss the button and it then becomes a drag icon. I know this is very minor but it is annoying.

Windows Media Player 11 still isn’t perfect like the original WinAmp but it is a step in the right direction.

A deal was in the works to dump the ex-Van Halen singer’s ratings-deprived program with shock jocks Greg “Opie” Hughes and Anthony Cumia, according to two people with knowledge of the deal. They spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement of the agreement next week.

Opie and Anthony were banished from terrestrial radio in 2002 oddly enough by their new boss, CBS Radio after airing a live account of listeners having sex in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral. CBS Radio was then known as Infinity Broadcasting.

Opie and Anthony resurfaced on XM in October 2004. The satellite radio provider has more than 6.5 million subscribers, with the Opie and Anthony show one of the most popular programs on its 170 channels.

XM will now syndicate the program to the stations in New York and six other markets, with three hours of the program airing on the CBS Radio stations, the people familiar with the deal said. XM will simultaneously broadcast that portion of the show, along with another two hours of exclusive O&A, they said.

A spokeswoman at CBS Radio declined to comment on the report, as did a spokesman for XM.

Roth’s radio career began in January, when he replaced Howard Stern on the CBS stations. But reviews were poor and Roth fought with management over the show’s format, putting the show on the skids less than four months into its run.

Roth, during one angry on-air rant, predicted the show could be yanked before May.

The move marks a shift in the dynamic between terrestrial and satellite radio. In the past, satellite raided terrestrial radio for big-name hosts such as Opie and Anthony or Stern. Now, the seven FM stations will rely on a syndicated satellite program.

In addition to the Free-FM station in New York, Opie and Anthony will reportedly air on WBCN-FM in Boston, WYSP-FM in Philadelphia, WRKZ-FM in Pittsburgh, WNCX-FM in Cleveland, WPBZ-FM in West Palm Beach, Fla., and KLLI-FM in Dallas.

Stern, who engaged in a lengthy on-air feud with Opie and Anthony, is in his first year of broadcasting for Sirius Satellite Radio. O&A will now fill in his old time slot.

Howard Stern’s daughter Emily has pulled out of a satirical stage performance in which she appears nude, apparently worried that enemies of her father would distribute pictures of her on the Internet.

Emily Stern, 22, has starred since November in “Kaballah,” staged by the Jewish Theater of New York at the Triad Theater, 158 W. 72nd St. She has been playing Madonna, the pop singer who gained an interest in the mystic Jewish form of study.

Tuesday, the company abruptly canceled its scheduled performances for this week at the 136-seat theater, saying Stern had dropped out after learning that she had become the subject of rumors on several Howard Stern fan club Web sites.

“She’s very scared now,” said Isi Tenonbom, a spokeswoman for the Jewish Theater, who said the company was looking for a replacement actress.

Tenonbom said that members of at least one fan club had left “vulgar” comments about Emily in online chat rooms, “thus creating the possibility that throngs of them would come to take her pictures in compromising poses.”

The operator of one site said he was aware that some photos of Emily Stern had made their way to the Web, and that site administrators were attempting to have them removed.

Tenonbom said the company had previously agreed not to divulge Stern’s relationship to the talk show host, whose morning program enters a second life next week on satellite radio.

Tuvia Tenonbom, the show’s director, said Stern’s departure puts the rest of the cast “in a very tough spot.”

A Web site for “Kaballah,” updated to announce its planned extension into 2006, says only that the lead, Madonna, will be played by “Long Island-born-and-raised Jewish actress, the talented Emily Stern.”

Tenonbom said Stern’s mother, Alison, had seen the show, but that Howard had not. She said Howard did not want his daughter to do the show because he was afraid his enemies would try to take advantage of the situation.

According to a bio posted on the Jewish Theater’s Web site, Stern is a Tisch School of the Arts graduate who has recently appeared in the 7th Sign’s production of “Zastrozzi: The Master of Discipline.”

A spokesman for Howard Stern could not be reached Tuesday night.

David is the ex-singer for the rock band Van Halen. Those of you who are childern of the 70s know David as the wild, womanizing front man who helped make Van Halen one of the biggest rock bands of that time. As time went on, David left the band and went on to a modestly successful solo career but nothing near the heights of fame brought to him by VH.

In 2006, Dave is kinder and gentler and has less hair. He is now an EMT/Helicopter pilot and in my opinion, not the man to be sitting in Howard Stern’s radio chair.

So what it the verdict?

Well, it’s not as bad as I expected but hardly listenable. Dave does not come off as the wild and crazy rock star he has been portrayed as. He is more like your crazy old uncle who still whistles at the young girls walking by. The best thing that Dave has going for him is that he is a likable guy. He is not trying to imitate Howard and frankly, I would rather listen to him than all of the other ASSHOLES that litter the radio. I’ll give you that David Lee Roth.

The downside is that, and I don’t know how to say this nicely, Dave switches subjects so fast that most of the time I have no idea what he is talking about. He sounds like a man babbling about everything pops into his head in order to fill up 4 hours.

That’s not a rap on Howard Stern. On any average morning Stern exposed to open air the way we think at our basest, most unkind moments, when our thoughts aren’t adulterated or moderated by the need to maintain a sociable veneer: the racism, sexism, stereotype-ism, pettiness and meanness that lurk somewhere beneath the surface of even the most sanctimonious Mr. and Mrs. Grundys—especially the most sanctimonious.

This is the essence of comedy, as has been well understood since ancient times. Stern would send a man out to quiz homeless drunks on current events, then they’d bet on whether each answer would be wrong or right. (Porn stars got treated the same way.) The quintessential Stern bit was sending his henchman Stuttering John to a fancy media do like a premier to ambush stars at their phoniest moments with queries about their menstrual cycles or sexual habits. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t enjoy watching the air escape from a preening, self-regarding celebrity?

Let’s not forget that one of the most extraordinary radio broadcasts of all time was the Howard Stern show of September 11, 2001. I heard it years later, broadcast as a rerun. Nothing delivers the immediacy of that awful morning as the way Stern and his goofballs reported the events downtown to each other, in sudden shocked seriousness and absolutely genuine dismay and fear, knowing no more than the rest of us, all in real time. You want reality programming? This was so real it’s hard to listen to without breaking into a sweat.

That said, on a normal day one never could tell how much of the Stern show was truly spontaneous. The regular psychodramas featuring the staff ganging up one another, complaining about each others’ laziness, stupidity, even poor personal hygiene, may have been scripted to within an inch of their lives, or they may have been as genuine as the cloudbursts within a big family. It certainly sounded real, but that might merely signify how good they were at their jobs.

The fact is the show was, by turns, hilarious, horrifying, and compelling. There are bits that still make me laugh out loud when they come to mind, in all their appalling tastelessness. By the way, the show could also be stupefyingly boring. Stern wasn’t above toadying to the mighty like anyone else; he genuflected to George W. Bush after 9/11, changing his tune only after the administration started cracking down on broadcast standards. You know what? Sometimes I changed the station to NPR.

That seems to be a capability denied to the numerous bluenoses, official and self-appointed alike, who stepped up their attacks on Stern in 2004, in the wake of the Janet Jackson thing at the Super Bowl. FCC Chairman Michael Powell, sensing the main chance, made Stern the symbol of all that society supposedly found objectionable on the air—Stern’s 12 million listeners be damned. The summit of hypocritically false piety was reached by Clear Channel Communications, which pulled the show off six of its stations. As I wrote at the time:

The network’s rationale was that a recent Stern segment that included references to a crude epithet for blacks, anal sex and the size of various peoples’ genital organs “blew right through” a “line in the sand” the network had drawn against indecency.

One might conclude from this that Clear Channel had a right to be shocked. However, as a frequent listener to the Stern show, I can state without fear of contradiction that there has probably not been a single day in the last 10 years in which all three of those references haven’t been an integral part of the program. In other words, if Clear Channel truly drew a line in the sand, it carefully drew it at a point it knew Howard Stern had long since crossed.

In 1997, with the release of Stern’s rather touching autobiographical movie, Private Parts, there was a lot of armchair analysis in the press about the secrets of his success. One constant in the discussion was his rigorously monogamous relationship with his wife, Alison. It was said—and it was true—that the conservatism of his domestic life was what enabled him to be so raunchy on the air. The constant leering and slavering over naked women and porn stars would be too scary and odious for listeners to accept if they thought he was really acting out all these verbal impulses.

And it was true: the corny jejunity of his home life reduced all the wild talk to just banter. It secured Stern’s role as an everyman, because every man deep down ogles and fantasizes about porn stars but doesn’t touch. Most, like Stern’s radio persona, would be worried about whether they’d measure up if they did touch. Stern understood that it’s human nature to talk big and act small, and he wasn’t afraid to locate himself smack in the middle of that peculiar neurosis.

Then he and Alison divorced. During the happy-marriage years, the story line was that if they ever broke up the change in his image would destroy his popularity. It sounds right and at some level he must have believed it, because he promptly entered into another monogamous relationship, although this time with a glamorous model. To hear him discuss it on the air, it was a marriage in all but name, and he hadn’t changed. The message was echt Stern: You can be living with a lingerie model and still be a meeskite.

The show appeared to suffer an audience decline starting about then, so the concerns about the host’s changed persona may have been well placed. This, along with the big payday, may even have had a lot to do with Stern’s move to satellite—possibly more than the FCC crackdown that Stern blames for the move.

Will Stern thrive on satellite? Who knows? In the short term, Sirius and Stern can claim the new contract’s a win-win: Sirius has gained over a million new subscribers since the deal was announced, more than enough on a straight revenue basis to pay for the contract, albeit a fraction of Stern’s terrestrial audience. It also won instant renown for Sirius and a big boost in its efforts to draw even with the No. 1 satellite service, XM. Stern gets the money and the freedom, although part of what made his show work was the tension between its content and the legal and social edge.

But that’s rather beside the point. Howard Stern is departing a popular entertainment medium, probably for good. Down here on Earth, we’ll miss him.
