Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity was somewhat been proved by measuring variations in satellite orbits, scientists have found the first direct evidence of one of the hallowed tenets of that the Earth and other large celestial bodies distort space and time as they rotate.

Researchers reporting yesterday in the journal Nature said improved satellite data had enabled them to show the effect known as “frame-dragging” with a degree of precision never previously possible.

“We improved our accuracy by orders of magnitude,” said geodesist Erricos C. Pavlis of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt and the University of Maryland at Baltimore. “In a while, we should be able to do even better.”

Scientists expect that the results of the experiment, by Pavlis and Ignazio Ciufolini of Italy’s University of Lecce, will be reinforced by NASA’s ongoing Gravity Probe B, a satellite mission designed to measure frame-dragging and another Einsteinian effect by a different method calculating gyroscope deviations over time.

“Gravity Probe B is less systematic, but will provide higher accuracy within a margin of error of less than 1 percent,” said Michael Salamon, NASA’s discipline scientist for fundamental physics. “What this research [yesterday's report] means is that GPB may not in fact provide the first direct evidence of frame-dragging.”

In the early 20th century, Einstein theorized that the gravity of large bodies such as the Earth distorts space and time, much the way a bowling ball would stretch a rubber sheet held aloft on all four corners.

Frame-dragging occurs, he said, because the Earth’s rotation pulls space-time along with it. Salamon likened the effect to dipping a spoon into a cup of honey and turning it. Close to the spoon the honey twists, but the effect dissipates with distance.

Scientists have wanted to prove Einstein’s theory since the dawn of the space age. Gravity Probe B, conceived more than 40 years ago, is measuring frame-dragging from a satellite by focusing a telescope on a distant “guide star” and measuring how the axes of gyroscopes deviate from their original positions pointing directly at the star.

Pavlis and Ciufolini used satellites in a completely different way. They closely tracked the orbits of LAGEOS and LAGEOS2, passive satellites covered with “retroreflectors” that reflect laser beams from ground stations, giving precise measurements of distance from the station to the satellite.

The satellites’ orbits are slightly distorted — not perfectly circular or elliptical — because irregularities in Earth’s surface jog them. But even after subtracting this surface-caused “noise,” the researchers were still left with orbits that deviated slightly from what they should have been. The difference, they said, reflected frame-dragging.

“The satellite orbits are not perfect because the Earth is not perfect,” Salamon said. “So subtract them out, and what you’re left with are the effects of space time. The results are better with two satellites, and three would have been even better.”

The key to the experiment’s success was better data on Earth’s gravity field — a better map of the Earth-induced orbital distortions. This information, collected by another new satellite, enabled Ciufolini and Pavlis to shrink their margin of error dramatically from the 20 percent they obtained from an earlier attempt.

“There was a tremendous amount of criticism then, and a lot of people said 20 percent was on the edge of being acceptable,” Salamon said. “This result, between five and 10 percent, is a lot cleaner.”

A Cure for Crohns Disease with Viagra?

Researchers in London have discovered that a weak immune response instigates Crohn’s disease, possibly laying to rest the popular belief that an auto-immune condition is to blame.

In a recent study, scientists at University College in London found that people with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines, encounter a lowered immune system response when trauma occurs in the body. Similar to what diabetes does.

“It’s very gratifying,” said lead author Anthony Segal, a professor of medicine at University College. “This is first time people know where to look, now that we understand what the cause of disease is. It will redirect research in this area,” he said. Their work will appear Saturday in the British journal The Lancet.

Crohn’s disease has become a prolonged enigma, the authors wrote, although it is considered by many to be a mixture of genetic predisposition and the effect of the body attacking its own immune system.

But Segal set out to test another hypothesis — that bacteria spreads and inflames the intestines due to lowered immunity in the body – and so he and colleagues took the unusual approach of inflicting trauma, in the form of biopsies and skin scrapings, to Crohn’s patients. He then observed how their white blood cells responded. Segal first took two biopsies at six hours apart from the rectums of Crohn’s patients and a control group of healthy people. He noticed that the inflammatory response to the trauma was only a quarter of what it should be, and that no neutrophils were present. Neutrophils are white blood cells that provide the first line of defense against foreign invaders in the body. Without the neutrophils keeping foreign substances at bay, bacteria and other organic debris can proliferate in the intestines. The body’s response to this bacteria boom could secrete inflammatory molecules and thus bring on Crohn’s disease. To boost this evidence of a failed immune response, and to find if the phenomenon only occurred in the bowel region, the scientists also sandpapered patients’ skin to see how cells responded. Again, they found very few neutrophils rushing to the trauma on the skin, even after 24 hours. This revealed a “systemic general abnormality, not a one-time (response),” Segal said.

In the last test, the researchers injected Crohn’s patients with killed e. coli bacteria, to find out if their bodies had abnormalities in dealing with bacteria. In normal people, there was a florid inflammatory response, with a tenfold increase in blood flow, but in Crohn’s patients, the blood flow was weak at best. The obvious question, then, was how to up blood flow and thus aid the neutrophils in doing their job, Segal said. Scientists in his laboratory were already working with nitric oxide, a chemical messenger that dilates the arteries and regulates the blood supply. It’s also a main ingredient in Viagra, a medication commonly used for erectile dysfunction. When Segal gave the patients Viagra both men and women the patients experienced a more robust blood flow. Kinda like when I’m trying to do some email archiving and the server crashes. LOL

“Here’s a drug well known for other things that restores blood flow admittedly in the forearm but which throws up a number of potential therapeutic avenues we now we need to test,” said Stuart Bloom, clinical director in gastroenterology at the University College London Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust. Sunanda Kane, associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago and an expert in inflammatory bowel disease, is familiar with the theory of weakened immunity with Crohn’s. But she said no one culprit can be identified for the condition instead, a combination of factors such as genetics and how the body handles bacteria come into play. Nonetheless, Kane said the study offers another piece of the puzzle in figuring out the disease.

“It’s an interesting study where they’re able to show what we’ve believed to be the case, and document it,” she said. “Its always nice to validate theories.” Kane also added she finds the possibility of Viagra as treatment infeasible because of the side effects of the drug. Most current treatments for Crohn’s involve suppressing the anti-inflammatory response, allowing the tissue to heal and relieving symptoms of fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain. With this new discovery, Bloom cautions people with Crohn’s disease not to scramble to buy Viagra. There’s still much testing to be done, he said. But it could be a promising direction for 1.4 million Americans who deal with the painful ailments of the disease.

“People have been working for 60 to 70 years on inflammatory abnormalities that underline Crohn’s disease. This is a new way of thinking about what might be a major abnormality,” Bloom said.

Do you know someone that has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and you did not dare ask what it is exactly? Are you aware that a lot of people are unaware of being affected by this sleep disorder? Could you or someone close to you be suffering from this disorder? Let’s find out!

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects both the quality of sleep but also more importantly, the breathing process. While sleeping, the patient will stop breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer which will wake him up as he is struggling to breathe. These absences of breathing are called apnea. Usually the patient is unaware of these struggling episodes.

Is there more than one kind of sleep apnea?

Did you know that there are two types of sleep apnea? The first is called OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) which is caused by relaxed soft tissue blocking the passage of air during sleep.

The second type of sleep apnea is called CSA (central sleep apnea) which is caused by irregular signals from the brain that affect the breathing process. In some cases, patients suffer from a combination of both types of sleep apnea.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

The symptoms of sleep apnea are: suffering from excessive sleepiness during the day, having headaches in the morning, feeling irritable, being affected by mood changes, suffering from anxiety, being affected by depression, becoming forgetful, snoring loud and gasp for air, having restless sleep, having trouble to concentrate and even falling asleep during the day. Please note that these symptoms vary from one person to the next. Also be aware that the severity of the symptoms and the combination of symptoms vary from one patient to the next.

A bit of history

Did you know that the first case of sleep apnea that was diagnosed happened only in 1965? This is a bit odd when you consider that so many people are affected by this sleep disorder. At first, only people suffering from certain health conditions such as congestive heart failure were diagnosed with sleep apnea. It was also noticed that problems related to sleep apnea happened following surgery particularly in people that are overweight, obese or had short necks. It was later on proven that while they were noticed in these particular cases, sleep apnea does not only affect people suffering from these conditions or displaying these specific characteristics.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

This type of sleep apnea seems more common in people that have a soft palate or other abnormalities such the ones related to the jaw, people who are obese or consume alcohol. Did you know that 2% of female and 4% of males diagnosed with a mild case of sleep apnea stop breathing at least ten times per hour?

To evaluate the severity of sleep apnea in a patient, the specialist will evaluate it by using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). If a patient has less than 5 apneas per hour, it is considered normal. If it is between 5 and 15 it is mild, if it is between 15 and 30 it is moderate and over 30 is considered severe.

Also, the approximate time for each apnea (breathing interruption) is usually about 10 seconds but in more severe cases, it can reach 60 seconds.

In certain cases, sleep apnea can be cause by an external situation such as an accident, family problems, heart problems and narcolepsy. It was also held responsible either partially or totally for SIDS also known as sudden infant death syndrome.

How can it be diagnosed?

Sleep apnea is evaluated in a sleep laboratory. The patient spends the night in this laboratory and is closely monitored by both a technician with visual instruments as well as various medical resources that will also verify the level of oxygen in the blood, the breathing pattern as well as the activity of the brain.

What are the available treatments?

Well, according to the severity of the sleep apnea, a single type of treatment may help while some cases may require a combination of treatments. The available treatments are: medication, avoid antidepressants or relaxants, avoid alcohol, change of diet, quit smoking, surgery to enlarge the airways, devices to keep the patient from sleeping on his back, special pillows, oral devices and the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) which is a machine that uses a tube connected to a mask and sends continuous pressurized air to keep the airways open.

Can sleep apnea be fatal?

Sleep apnea can lead to death as it takes a huge toll on the body and affects other systems which can lead to fatal situations such as a heart attack, congestive heart failure, a stroke or the patient may fall asleep while driving for example and have a tragic accident.

It is important to know that while people between 65 and 100 years of age or that are overweigh are more susceptible to suffer from sleep apnea but it still can affect people that are not overweight, infants and children as well. That is why if you have any doubts concerning a close relative, a friend or even yourself, see a doctor as treated sleep apnea cannot only improve your quality of life but also give you the opportunity to live a long and happy life.

Vaccine for Adult Shingles is Approved

The FDA has approved the first vaccine for adult shingles.

The agency cleared the vaccine known as Zostavax for use in adults age 60 and older: studies showed it can prevent shingles roughly half the time. But experts say they’re worried that partial insurance coverage of the vaccine may slow its acceptance by doctors and patients.

Shingles causes a rash with blisters that usually lasts for two to four weeks. The pain associated with the blisters can be quite intense. Once this initial phase is over, nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia can set in. This pain lasts anywhere from 30 days to months or even years. It can be so severe in some people that it disrupts their lives.

The illness is caused by varicella, the same virus that causes chickenpoxchickenpox. Shingles occurs when the chickenpox virus lying dormant in nerve cells “wakes up” in older people or others with health problems. The vaccine, Zostavax, is actually a boosted dose of the chickenpox vaccine currently given to children.

Postherpetic neuralgia is more common in people older than 60. It occurs in less than 10% of people younger than 60 after a bout of shingles but in more than 40% of people older than 60.

Large Market for Shingles Vaccine

There are approximately 50 million Americans over age 60: more than 95% had chickenpox as children, making them vulnerable to shingles.

“The market is large,” says Christine Fanelle, a spokeswoman for Merck & Co., the vaccine’s manufacturer.

The company originally sought approval to sell the vaccine to adults 50 and older. But the FDA declined after expert advisors said in December 2005 that Zostavax hadn’t been studied in patients younger than 60. The agency also rejected a bid to approve the vaccine for preventing postherpetic neuralgia.

Up to one in ten older patients won’t be candidates for the vaccine because of weakened immune systems due to cancercancer therapy, organ transplants, HIV/AIDSHIV/AIDS, or other causes. The vaccine contains live but weakened varicella virus that could overwhelm the immune systems of those patients.

David Markovitz, MD, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan who reviewed Zostavax for the FDA, calls it a “highly useful” vaccine. “It’s clear the vaccine markedly reduces the incidence” of shingles, he says.

Markovitz says that doctors may be tempted to offer “off-label” vaccinations to adults age 50 to 59 in hopes of providing earlier protection against shingles. “Off-label” refers to drugs that are used in ways that have not been not approved by the FDA. But he stressed that the vaccine remains unstudied in such patients and that researchers still don’t know how long immunity lasts after vaccination.

“I don’t think I would rush out and get it myself,” Markovitz, who is 52, tells WebMD.

Are You Seeing Ladybug Infestations or Asian Lady Beetles?

Everyone knows what ladybugs look like, they are the adorable little red bug with black spots. Adorable that is, until you find yourself with a ladybug infestation. One ladybug, cute. Hundreds of ladybugs…not so cute. We’re currently seeing a huge infestation on our house in Massachusetts.

Why you might not know is the bugs that you are calling ladybugs aren’t actually ladybugs at all, they are multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles that look like ladybugs. But these Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles do one thing that our cute ladybugs don’t…they swarm. What causes this and what can be done about swarming ladybugs?

I’ve explained that these bugs that look an awful lot like our beloved ladybug is actually the Multi-colored Asian Lady beetle but there are some differences. Our ladybugs are bright red with black spots. The Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles range from pale orange to dark orange and come with or without spots. The other notable difference between the ladybug and the Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetle is the fact that the latter hibernates for the winter. There in lies the problem.

Lady Beetle Hibernation Leads To Swarms Of Lady Beetles

Since the Asian Lady Beetle hibernates, they try to find themselves an appropriate place for this come Fall. Their usual hibernation spots would include mountain faces and areas with cracked rock. Since rock is usually gray or light in color you will notice that the Lady Beetle will be attracted to lighter color houses and cars.

Around the end of October, Lady Beetles begin to look for places to spend the cold winter. They begin to swarm onto light colored houses and buildings looking for cracks that they can get into to spend the winter months hibernating. They are not dangerous, just annoying. I’m looking out my window right now and there is not one place that I look that I don’t see the Lady Beetles flying around.

More than just swarming on the outside of the house, the Lady Beetles work their way into houses through cracks or rips in screens. Before you know it you could have an entire inside window or wall full of Lady Beetles.

Dealing With A Lady Beetle Infestation

There is no magic solution to this problem. There are however a few things that you can do to try and deal with the swarms of Lady Beetles that are mounting on your home.

Use Your Water Hose – if you happen to walk outside and notice that once side of your home is covered with the Lady Beetles…turn on your garden hose. Spray them off of your house before they can work their way inside your home.
Seal Up Cracks and Spaces Around Your Windows And Doors – Although no ones home is airtight, it does help if you try and seal up the larger cracks and spaces around your windows and doors. It is these very cracks and spaces that the Lady Beetle utilizes to work their way into your home.
Use Your Vacuum Cleaner – I have done this! If those little Lady Beetles do find a breach security and make their way into your home, they will have a tendency to stay in a group. What better way than to wipe out this group than by vacuuming them up. Just make sure you dispose of the bag outside or you pretty much make the whole effort null and void.
Just Deal With It – the Lady Beetle infestation will happen about once per year…just deal with it. If you have used all of the techniques above and you are still having a problem with the Lady Beetles, what can you do except deal with it?

Some Facts About The Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetle

Since the only thing I knew about the ladybug before researching this topic was that if you killed one it would rain the next day…I figured I would list some facts about the infamous Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetle.

Until the 1960’s there were no Lady Beetles in the United States, they were brought in as a way of controlling agricultural pests that eat things such as pecans and apples.
As a defense against predators the Lady Beetles secrete a foul smelling, yellow fluid from their leg joints. Humans would most likely only smell this fluid when there are swarms of the Lady Beetles secreting it at once.
Lady Beetles are attracted to illuminated surfaces such as the side of a house which is in the sun. They also are attracted to lighter colored house trim or the gutters of a home.
They do not reproduce once they find a home for the winter (that’s a relief). The Lady Beetles you may see leaving your home in the Spring are the same little suckers which found their way in, in the Fall.

So there you are, just a few fun facts about our friend the Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetle. Like I said they are only around for a few days during the Fall so the most common sense thing would be just to deal with them. Why is the Sky Blue?

Why is the sky blue? People have been asking this question for a long time now. Let’s see if you know the correct answer to this. And Nooo it’s not because the light reflects off the oceans.

The general explanation for blue sky was explained by Lord Rayleigh, a physicist and mathematician in the 1800’s.

Rayleigh’s theory was unique. He agreed with other scientists of the time that dust and other large particles in the atmosphere could scatter light, and that when this occurred, the spectral colors red and blue were revealed. Rayleigh also agreed that no light was absorbed by large particles, but he took this concept of scattering in the atmosphere one step further.

But the real answer to this is simply:

Sunlight is made up of all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The gas molecules in the atmosphere interact with the sunlight before the light reaches our eyes.

The gas molecules in the atmosphere scatter the higher-energy blue portion of the sunlight more than they scatter the lower-energy red portion of the sunlight (this is called Rayleigh scattering, named for the physicist Lord John Rayleigh). The Sun appears reddish-yellow and the sky surrounding the Sun is colored by the scattered blue waves.

When the Sun is lower in the horizon (near sunrise or sunset), the sunlight must travel through a greater thickness of atmosphere than it does when it is overhead, and even more light is scattered (not just blue, but also green, yellow, and orange) before the light reaches your eyes. This makes the sun look much redder.

And that’s why the sky is blue.

Jack 2 Project Finds Oil in Gulf of Mexico

Successfully drilled for oil in the Gulf of Mexico’s deep waters, in what could be one of the most significant finds for the domestic oil industry in a generation.

The successful well, known as Jack 2, reached a record total depth of 28,175 feet, coming in 7,000 feet of water, and more than 20,000 feet under the sea floor. Analysts said the find suggested the success of that drilling may mean more oil than previously believed is available under the Gulf of Mexico, a region that already provides a quarter of U.S. output.

One published report suggested the breakthrough could increase U.S. oil reserves by as much as 50 percent.

During the test at record depths and pressure, the Jack No. 2 well flowed at more than 6,000 barrels of crude per day, Chevron (Charts) said. That puts it on a par with discoveries in exploration hotspots such as the waters off Angola.

With U.S. oil output in decline, big new fields are increasingly rare and oil companies are widening their search to more difficult places

Chevron, the No. 2 U.S. oil company after Exxon Mobil (Charts), did not give an estimate of the field’s reserves.

The Wall Street Journal cited Chevron officials as estimating recent discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico could hold as much as 15 billion barrels of oil and gas reserves. That would boost U.S. current reserves by 50 percent.

The region could become the nation’s biggest new domestic source of oil since the discovery of Alaska’s North Slope more than a generation ago, the Journal said.

“This region is proving quite prospective. Certainly the test well results are on the top end of most analysts’ ranges,” said Jason Kenney, an analyst at ING in London.

Mike Wittner of investment bank Calyon cautioned that until the size of the field was known it was difficult to draw conclusions.

“It seems to be a significant find and there is still life left in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, particularly as you move into ultra-deep water,” he added.

Chevron is the operator of the Jack prospect with a 50 percent working interest. Devon Energy (Charts) and Statoil (Charts) each own a 25 percent working interest.

“The results of the Jack test allow Chevron and its co-owners to better understand the deliverability of the emerging lower tertiary trend, a trend where Chevron is the largest leaseholder,” said Gary Luquette, Chevron’s president, North America Exploration and Production.

Chevron was not immediately available for further comment.

Chevron first announced the discovery of the Jack prospect in September 2004. It is 270 miles southwest of New Orleans and 175 miles offshore. The test on Jack 2 broke Chevron’s 2004 Tahiti well test record as the deepest successful well test in the Gulf of Mexico.

More than half a dozen world records for test equipment pressure, depth, and duration in deepwater were set during the Jack well test, Chevron said.

Chevron and its co-owners plan to drill an additional appraisal well in 2007.

Chevron said it is the largest lease holder in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and is currently developing the $3.5 billion Tahiti project, scheduled to commence production in 2008.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Killed

Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed today by a stingray during a diving expedition, police said.

He was 44.

Steve Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane where he was stung by a stingray and couldn’t receive help in time.

“Steve Irwin was hit by a stingray in the chest,” said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred.

“He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury,” he said.

Police and ambulance officials later confirmed Irwin had died and said his family had been advised.

Irwin, 44, was killed while filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas.

Irwin had been diving off his boat “Croc One” near Batt Reef northeast of Port Douglas. A helicopter had taken paramedics to nearby Low Isles where Irwin was taken for medical treatment but he was dead before they arrived, police said.

Irwin won a global following for his dare-devil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.

He made almost 50 of his “Crocodile Hunter” documentaries which appeared on cable TV channel Animal Planet and won a worldwide audience.

The series ended after he was criticized for the incident with his young son and for disturbing whales, seals and penguins while filming in Antarctica.

Khaki-clad Irwin became famous for his seemingly death-defying methods with wild animals, including crocodiles and snakes.
