“If you really want to take your time, you probably can pull down as much information for free as with the fee-based services,” says the Florida-based Mr. Zillman.

First, he suggests creating a free e-mail address that does not contain personal information such as your name or date of birth. That can be set up with Yahoo, juno, netzero, hotmail, toast, msn, and others.

He recommends using the public library and asking for a librarian skilled at Internet searches.

Mr. Zillman’s site has a free streaming video segment about finding people on the Internet. (To find the correct page, go to yahoo.com and type: Marcus Zillman finding people).

He lists dozens of resources and sites, indicating which are free. He also recommends articles found at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue20/search-engines/ and http://www.virtualchase.com/articles/background_checks.html.

Dozens of companies charge for information but the results may not turn out to be what you wanted. Among them: identitycrawler.com, publicbackgroundchecks.
com, locateamerica.com, and usa-people-search.com.

Before you pay for a search:

# Learn exactly what information you will get. Read the company’s privacy policy.

# Find out if there is a working telephone number for handling complaints.

# See what other people say about the company’s reputation at RipOffReport.com; the Lycos Discussion Search (http://discussion.lycos.com), groups.google.com.

Mr. Zillman’s favorite sites which offer some free information include www.argali.com (white and yellow pages); craigball.com, journalismnet.com, and virtualgumshoe.com. Public records can be searched at pretrieve.com, searchsystems.net, and http://www.knowx.com.

People can often be tracked down by typing their name in quotation marks at Google.com or Yahoo.com (for example, “John B. Doe”).

ZabaSearch.com provides birth years, addresses, and telephone numbers.

National telephone directories are at whitepages.com, us.411.com, and anywho.com. Also, country-by-country telephone listings are at infobel.com.

Virtualchase.com aims to teach legal professionals to use Internet tools and has articles about finding people and telephone books. Another useful article about finding people is at Zimmerman’s Research Guide.

Ed DeJesus, who has written about his ongoing hunt for more than 700 high school classmates (he’s found 437), gleans bits of information at ussearch.com, peoplefinders.com, infospace.com, and switchboard.com. He spent about $100 to do an in-depth search on Intelius.com and netted 100 classmates.

Finding a woman using her maiden name can be difficult, he says, but searching obituaries in a person’s hometown newspaper might yield results. That can also work for people with very common names.

Classmates.com and Reunion.com permit people to register their names, but to contact a listed person the subscription fee is $35 to $40 annually.

Looking for people in other countries? Google searches can be tailored to 112 countries. Go to Google and click on “Language Tools.” At the bottom of that page, click on the country’s flag. Mexico, for example, is google.com.mx; England is google.co.uk; South Africa is google.co.za.

College students and recent graduates have turned thefacebook.com into a huge success in just 18 months. It’s an online interactive network for students using their college e-mail address, and is in place at hundreds of colleges.

Very soon every United States Citizen crossing the Canadian or Mexican border will need a valid United States Passport. If you are traveling by air, you will need this documentation beginning January 23, 2007. If crossing by land or sea (including Ferries) you will need to have a valid US passport as early as January 2008.

So how do you obtain a valid United States Passport? It is pretty easy actually. You need to go in person to one of the 9000 acceptance facilities located throughout the United States. These acceptance facilities include some Federal, State and Probate courts, post offices, Municipal offices and even some local Libraries.

You have located an acceptance facility… now what do you do? Well prior to showing up you must make sure you have the appropriate documentation that you will need to complete the application. This documentation includes two photographs of yourself, proof of United States Citizenship and a valid form of photo identification such as a valid driver’s license. Once you have all the documentation you will go to the facility and fill out an application for the passport.

You can obtain a copy of the application prior to showing up at the facility to speed things up but you MUST NOT sign or date the application prior to visiting the acceptance facility. A copy of the Passport application can be downloaded here.

Congratulations. You now know how to obtain a United States Passport!

UPDATED US Passport Information

All of the new passports that are issued have an RFID tag in them

Check on your US passport application here online

It costs an additional $12 security surcharge for all applications and it’s included in the fees

Anyone under 14 years old must appear in person for their US passport, even if he/she has had a US passport previously

As we are probably all aware, everyone will need a U.S passport by January of 2008 if they plan to leave the borders of the United States in any direction. For those who don’t know how to obtain a passport you can check out an article earlier published on this site: How to Get a United States Passport.

In 2006 the United States started using RFID, Radio Frequency ID, in an effort to thwart document forgery. The RFID is a chip which is digitally signed by the issuing country enabling authorities to distinguish between official documents and forged ones. Wow, that sounds great right?

It would be if the information on the RFID chip was in anyway encoded. It is a pretty simple concept that if you can read the data you can then clone the data and create a new tag. Right now it appears that the RFID passport is in no way improving security and therefor is a huge waste of money.

But how would anyone read the information on an RFID passport chip? Pretty simple actually. You could order a reader from the maker, AGG Identification Technologies or you could make your own for about $200.
Or add an antenna to a standard RFID reader. The information would be read using the same software that the Boarder Patrol uses: Golden Reader Tool made by Security Networks. The reader also acts as a writer, so once the information is available it can then be duplicated on the spot.

All of the information about hacking the RFID passport chip in this article is not provided for the purpose of actually hacking the chip. The reason I felt the need to write this article is because I find it appalling. It’s like the government just wants us to have the illusion of security instead of the real deal.

Five years after the worst terrorist attack on American soil, families of some of the nearly 3,000 victims gathered Monday at Ground Zero for a solemn ceremony.

The commemoration included four moments of silence. Two for the times that hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center towers (which Dracut’s own John Ogonowski piloted flight 11) and two for when the burning towers collapsed into mountains of rubble, killing thousands of people working there and first responders who were trying to rescue them. Including my friend Ray Rocha.

An estimated 2,973 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Memorials were also held in Washington and Pennsylvania.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, the president and first lady attended a service at Trinity Church near Ground Zero.

“It’s hard not to think about the people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001,” Bush said after the service. “You know, you see the relatives of those who still grieve, and I just wish there was some way we could make them whole. So [Monday is] going to be a day of sadness for a lot of people.”

But it’s also a day for affirming the nation’s fight against terrorists who would commit such acts against Americans and its allies, he said.

“It’s also a day of remembrance, and I vowed that I’m never going to forget the lessons of that day,” he said.

Let’s not forget all the meaningful information we got from the President, goverment and Homeland Security warnings.

GPS Ankle Bracelet Plugged into a phone outlet in Joe Magno’s ranch home on Rock Avenue in Hudson is a black box.
And strapped around the former high school teacher’s ankle is a rubber and metal bracelet. If he so much as steps outside for fresh air, dunks the bracelet or tries to cut it off, the radio connection between the two is broken, an alarm rings in a field monitoring office staffed 24 hours a day in government center in Boston.
Magno is one of more than 600 people in the state assigned a radio frequency electronic monitoring bracelet. The 65-year-old is awaiting trial on charges he raped a male student at Maynard High School and is back in Middlesex Superior Court tomorrow for a pre-trial conference.
With more bracelets in use nearly every year, are they working? Are more people destined to be fitted with the newest GPS bracelets, now reserved for about 100 sex offenders?

Of 8,300 people who have been strapped with the bracelet, only 8 percent, about 700, have tried to break it off, according to Deputy Commissioner of Probation Paul Lucci. One of them was Hudson wedding photographer Gary Tobin, who cut off his bracelet and fled to New Hampshire while awaiting trial on charges he robbed a pizzeria with a machete in 2004.

The Global Positioning Satellite tracking bracelets, which can track one’s location down to a few feet, is now tethered to more than 100 sex offenders. A similar percentage have escaped from those bracelets, which include a cell phone the offender must wear on his or her belt.

The difference in cost between monitoring equipment for one bracelet, about $3,650 per year for GPS and less for the radio technology, compared with the annual cost of incarceration, an average of $43,025, is enough to keep judges sending people home on house arrest.
There are other advantages besides saving taxpayer dollars to keeping nonviolent criminals on the bracelet, said Boston criminal attorney Peter Elikann.
Jail can be a “pressure cooker of a crime school,” Elikann said.
“When (younger people) go to jail, they hang out with older, more violent criminals,” he said. “They come out worse.”
Radio frequency electronic monitoring bracelets were first introduced in the state in 2001 when they were strapped to 811 men and women.

One year ago, sex offenders were the first to be monitored through GPS technology, which uses Department of Defense satellites to track one’s location and can specify areas where the offender can and cannot travel.
Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey has also proposed a bill that would put people who violate restraining orders on GPS monitoring.
The American Civil Liberties Union sees bracelets as positive if the person would otherwise be heading to prison.
“If it’s being used as an alternative to incarceration, then it’s not a bad thing,” said Carol Rose, executive director of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Monitoring can be a problem when the records become open to anyone.
“Technology is moving far faster than the law is keeping up with it,” Rose said. The state needs to review its privacy laws to make sure there are safeguards in how the information is being used, who has access to it, how it is being stored, she said.
Bracelets also give the inmate the chance to gain job skills and re-integrate into society, Lucci said.
Magno, who suffers from numerous health issues, was released on $20,000 cash bail with permission to leave for doctor’s appointments, court dates and meeting with his lawyer.
Conditions of his house arrest include staying away from anyone younger than 16, Maynard High School and its students, and the alleged victim and witnesses.
But no one is monitoring his phone line to see if he is calling teenagers, and Magno’s movements are not being tracked. Should he leave his home with the bracelet on, there would be no way to track with the bracelet where he went.
Local police say they keep a lookout for locals on house arrest, but only investigate if a complaint comes in. The monitoring is done by the probation department.
Despite that, “our officers patrol that area a little bit more if we know someone is on house arrest, or if we see them where they’re not supposed to be,” said Hudson Police Chief Richard Braga.
Most probation officers notify the local police departments when a resident is under house arrest, but there is no requirement to do so.
“If we had any reason to suspect an individual is violating the condition of their release in any way,” Braga said, “then we certainly would visit the home, attempt to make contact and take any action that we would need to.”

Physical security is very important to a home owner. Your home is one of your most important possessions since this is where you and your loved ones reside.

Once you know that your home is safe from intruders, you can rest assured that your material and personal possessions as well as your loved ones, are secured.

There are several parts of your home that you need to secure by using electronic devices:

The perimeter of your house to prevent burglars from intruding on your home.

Enclosed areas within the house should be secured as well, in case of fire.

Your garage should also have an intruder alarm to protect your vehicles, aside from the anti-theft device on the car itself.

It does not matter what style of life you lead. Home security should be and essential part of your budget to give you peace of mind. In addition to providing physical security in the home, your home security system should also help you find help should an emergency ensue. Here are some tips when planning for the security of your home:

Make an initial survey of your house and from there, develop a home security plan. Check all of the rooms and the area outside of your house. Determine if the neighbors have a clear view of what is going on within your house. Having a very open area that can be easily observed by anyone from the outside may be a threat to your security.

When placing burglar alarms or intruder sensors, place them in strategic areas in and out of your house. Home security need not be expensive. You do not need to put in alarms and sensors on each and every part of the house. As long as they are installed on the proper places, then your house will be secured enough.

Review your way of living and the size of your family. Do you often have visitors who may roam around freely? Do you have a member of the family who may come inside the house in the middle of the night? These factors will help you decide on the level of security system that you will install on your home.

You can place sensors within your house. These sensors can be installed on windows to alarm you of intruders. In addition, you may install sensors within the house, specifically in hallways, to warn you of intruders within the house.

Place fire alarms in areas around the house which is most likely to gather heat or smoke. An unusual level of smoke, fire or heat can easily be detected to warn you of impending fire threats.

There are mechanical locks and sensors that you can install on doors for good measure.

For households with babies, you may purchase a baby monitor or a video surveillance. A video security system in your house will give you peace of mind. You may also automate your home, and watch your children from your TV screen so that you can keep track of what they are doing.

Whether you choose to install it yourself or get the services of a company which specializes in building security systems, home security should not be taken for granted.

You should put in extra time and effort in order to ensure that you and your family have a happy and physically secure environment.

Windows Defender needs Automatic Update service running to get definition updates, and downloads them directly through the network connection for Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. Not sure if I like that. It scans a lot slower, especially when scanning archives. It took forever to get through my Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield 2 program folders. Those game installs are loaded with huge archive folders for maps. Only 8.4 gigs on this drive and it took 23 minutes to scan with a full system scan, spending like 22 and a half minutes on just this drive. It went through my other drive with nothing but 9.5 gigs of mp3 files very quickly.Windows Defender REALLY wants to run all the time now like an anti-virus. Even when I disable Windows Defender real time protection, which it has loads of check points for, and close the window, it leaves no icon in the tasktray, but still has two running process’s, (MSASCui.exe and MsMpEng.exe), one using 15 megs of memory and the other 5.

I, personally, don’t want it running all the time. I don’t need it running all the time. It didn’t find a single thing because I never get any spyware. I just want it to do the occasional full scan when I tell it to.

It took me a couple minutes to figure out how to shut Windows Defender down. It installs a whole new service, Windows Defender Service. Maybe if I just stop the service and set its startup type to Manual, and remove the startup entry it created too, ok rebooting to try it, ok not starting with system. Failing to start service when running it, must manually start the service. Ok I manually started the service, running ok now, must manually stop the service to shut it down again, and then end task on the 1 process it still leaves running (MSASCui.exe, using 5 megs of memory) even after shutting down its service.

I’m gonna have to manually start Windows Defender service everytime I want to use it, and then manually stop its service, and kill the extra process it still leaves, when I’m done. Cause I just don’t need it or want it running all the time if I’m gonna scan with it once a month at most.

It really wants to be integrated and run all the time. I don’t think I’ll mind when its preinstalled into Vista, but this aint Vista, and it should shut down when I want it to. Thats ok I know how to shut it down and how to get it started again when I want to use it.

Pretty impressed with Windows Defender even tho I don’t like how badly it wants to always run. Its Software Explorers thing in its Tools section, and also places a shortcut for in the windows control panel, is pretty impressive. Gives loads of info about everything, every startup item, every running process, every open network connection.

I like Windows Defender, now that I figured out how to tame it. It has no license expiration date anymore in its about box either.

The Internet has changed so much in the last few years. I can remember not to long ago when a person could safely chart his course through the Internet safely and easily, but now the Internet has changed for the worse for the uninformed user. Today, the Internet is full of spy ware, Internet hijackers, dialers and online stalkers. So what can we do to curve the possibilities of being overtaken with these nasty Internet bugs?

The first thing and most important is never ever open an email attachment sent from an unknown address. These types of attachments can deliver nasty things like spy ware, email viruses, and other things, which are not good for our computers.

Secondly, Install a good Internet filtering software, and never click on unknown websites. When we do things such as cruise the Internet for research we can open the door to threats by clicking on unknown websites. Web Hijackers can literally take over our web browsers leaving us helpless to the fate they deliver.

Thirdly, when something sounds to good to be true it probably is. Never ever give out personal information to anyone on the Internet. Scammers use unsolicited email to rob us of our personal information. Identity theft is one of the highest growing problems on the Internet.

Finally, if you or any other member of your family use chat software never ever give out personal information such as your address, phone number, or passwords. An intruder might use this information to track you down. The stalker might also use use your passwords to capture your Social Security Number, credit card information, and other personal data.

If we all learn to practice some of these simple things we can save ourselves from a lot of heartache and headaches which the Internet has to offer.

Your Cell Phones records can be purchased from a website for only $50 such as BestPeopleSearch.com

A U.S. congressman said Friday that federal agencies were looking into whether telephone companies were sufficiently protecting consumers’ records amid concerns that Internet sites were selling cellphone call information.

Rep. Edward Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) told him the agency was investigating whether phone companies were adequately protecting consumer records. He said in a statement “the FCC and the Federal Trade Commission were coordinating efforts to combat this rising fraud.”

In November, Markey asked the FTC and the FCC to investigate what he said was a violation of private consumer information and to take steps to protect consumers.

The biggest U.S. mobile service, Cingular Wireless, owned by AT&T Inc. and BellSouth Corp., said late Friday that it received a temporary restraining order against Data Find Solutions and 1st Source Information Specialists Inc.

It said it had sued the companies alleging they “unlawfully obtained and disseminated Cingular customer records.”

Earlier on Friday, CTIA, an industry group representing U.S. mobile telephone services, called for federal and state authorities to investigate Web sites that it says fraudulently obtain and sell consumers’ cell phone call information.

CTIA spokesman Joe Farren said call record sales plans were brought to the group’s attention by member companies, including Verizon Wireless, which last year sued companies it said were trying to wrongfully obtain private customer information.

“We very much believe that laws are being broken and people are profiting from it,” Farren said. “Without prosecution there will continue to be this fraud and subscribers and wireless companies will continue to be the victims.”
