Public speaking is a gift when it’s done correctly but you may need a few tips to achieve it.

Why are people so afraid to get up in front of an audience and give a speech?

Basically, people are afraid of being humiliated in front of others. Some may have negative experiences in the past, such as having been laughed at by the other kids in school when in front of the class. But, for most people, it’s the generalized fear that they are going to get up on stage and tank; that people won’t like them.

Now, many of the above are quite normal reactions. In fact, some experts say a mild level of anxiety is good before you give a speech as it gives you a burst of energy, resulting in a more dynamic presentation. But, if the fear of public speaking is such that it is keeping you from advancing in your career, or keeping you away from certain social situations, then it’s time for you to act.

The fear of public speaking can manifest itself in many ways:

You get “butterflies” in your stomach.

Your palms sweat.

Your hands shake.

Your knees also shake and you feel as if your legs are about to collapse.

Your heart beats much faster than normal.

You experience a “fainting” feeling.

You have panicky thoughts.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Most people don’t want to hear this, but the best way to conquer a fear of public speaking is practice, practice, practice. Facing any fear head on allows us to control it, rather than let it control us. Our over-reactions to our fears is really our brains trying to protect us from what it perceives as a threatening situation. Feeling faint is a good way to keep us off a stage, saving us from
the threat of humiliation. But, the more we experience the “threatening” situation without the harm (humiliation), the more we’re able to extinguish that fear.

A good way to begin feeling comfortable presenting publicly is to start small. Start sharing stories with friends and co-workers. This could be something you read about in the news, or something you did over the weekend. The point is to practice speaking in front of others, and feeling successful at it.

If you have no problem speaking socially in front of friends, but shake at the thought of getting behind a podium and speaking in front of strangers, then practicing behind a podium is what you must do. Lucky for you there exists speaking clubs such as Toastmaster’s International, which meet weekly in cities all over the world. For a nominal fee, you can join a club in your area and practice speaking in public, as well as hearing speeches on a weekly basis. You will also receive feedback on your weaknesses as well as your strengths. You’ll probably be surprised to find out that you’re better than you thought you were.

But I’m too Afraid to Practice Public Speaking

For those whose anxiety level or social phobia is so great that they’re having extreme trouble getting into the practice phase, there is some hope for you as well. Psychotherapy as well as hypnosis has been used by people who need to learn ways of coping with fear of public speaking. With hypnosis, you can help desensitize yourself to your fear, as well as visualize success speaking before an audience. Hypnosis is also helpful with managing anxiety.

For extreme anxiety, there are also medications such as beta blockers which can provide some temporary relief; enough to possibly help you gain a positive speaking experience. If that don’t help imagien yourself play the scary maze game or what the Brady Bunch taught us about imagining your audience.

The point is, you don’t have to allow your fear to rule your life. For some, the ability to give a speech in public can mean closing a sale, getting a promotion, or charting a new career path. It would be a shame, with all the resources now available to help you conquer your fear, to allow that fear to win.

I’d definitely recommend this and I bought it for a few other people too. Marketing and public relations is vastly different on the Web than in mainstream media. He says that the “old rules” of mainstream media (which he says do not work on the Web) are about “controlling a message” and the only ways to get the message into the public domain using mainstream media is to buy expensive advertising or beg the media to write about you.

The Web is different!

He says “that the rules of marketing and PR on the Web are completely different. Instead of buying or begging your way in, Scott says anybody can “publish their way in” using the tools of social media such as, blogs, podcasts, online news releases, online video, viral marketing, and online media.”

Haven’t seen this online PR seminar but have heard a few times it talks about the new rules of PR and how to go from Corporate speak right to the buyer.

David also talks about YouTube and viral video by saying:

“Most importantly: Your video needs to be funny or amazing or remarkable or have some fascinating information or be controversial. Basically the video needs a reason for people to pass it on. If you can find pass along value connected to your organization and its products, great. I’m not a fan of stupid contests or celebrity endorsements unrelated to a company and its products.”

And finally if I haven’t come across as a total fanboy already, he’s got an audio series supporting the PR2.0 book.

I’ve been on the intarwebs longer than you me. Want to see how much of a geek I am?

I remember writing BASIC code when I was 9 as President Ronald Regan was shot.

BBS, AOL 1.0, Prodigy and Compuserve yea yea did all that too. I was also the first person in Dracut to get broadband from MediaOne.

Things really took off back in 1996 with making my own website just to learn what all this www stuff was about. After about a year of me and a friend messing around with Allaire Homesite. I got more into Microsoft FrontPage and then writing HTML code.
I made my pages at this point sometime in 1998 from clean HTML and began learning how to make graphics in Adobe Photoshop.

Somewhere before Y2K I thought that making some websites to do marketing online might be a big idea. So I started to throw up some affiliate sites and get them linked (spam?) from other sites and link lists. I did pretty good.

Also started to video chat more online and throw up some forums that got fairly popular and a few I sold.

Fast forward 5 years I’m a professional web marketer now with skills in HTML/CSS, linux/IIS server environments, Photoshop Expert user, complaint and accessible code and design. I learned early enough that it’s better to make sites for people and communities rather than search engines and traffic. Although this site gets more than 10,000 unique visitors a day now.

I know feel that web marketing is where I want to be. Nowadays anyone can easily make a blog or website from some WYSIWYG editor so I want to drive traffic to mine and clients sites. The trick is learning all the latest ways to link build and drive targeted traffic to the right places and doing it at the least amount of cost possible.
