If you’re like most American sports fans, you hear “Jay Cutler” and think about the Bears’ quarterback. But there’s also a Jay Cutler who’s a 5-foot-9, 270-pound physical freak, and this Cutler is better at his sport than the Bears’ quarterback is at his.

“I want to make history. This is all I think about. It’s what I live for,” Cutler told the Las Vegas Sun. “I eat, drink and sleep bodybuilding.”

As a three-time winner, Cutler is in elite company. He looks like he’s having more fun than when I’m playing scary maze game. The only other men to win the title more than twice are Lee Haney (eight times), Ronnie Coleman (eight), Arnold Schwarzenegger (seven), Dorian Yates (six), Sergio Oliva and Frank Zane (three each).

In the 2009 competition, Branch Warren came in second place and last year’s winner, Dexter Jackson, came in third.

Jay Cutler, the youngest of seven, was born Aug. 3, 1973 in Worcester, Mass., and currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife. Jay worked in his brother’s concrete business from early childhood where he developed the physique that became the foundation for his bodybuilding career.

It was during his studies at Quinsigamond Community College that he discovered bodybuilding, and began training on his 18th birthday in 1991. His training quickly led to competition. Just a year later, at the age of 19, he entered and won his first show at the Teen Nationals in Raleigh, N.C.

But, it was 2003 that catapulted Jay’s already soaring professional bodybuilding career to the next level where he claimed five victories and three second-place finishes in eight contests!

We are people from all walks of life. Students, blue-collar workers, engineers, doctors, nurses, you name it. What we have in common is an infinity for a high-risk sport, skydiving. Some also participate in other sports like scuba diving, kayaking, rock climbing, skiing. There is a sense of camaraderie among us. A sense that we understand a greater truth that is missed by most people.

Mentally it is an incredibly refreshing break from “society”. Skydiving is a super stress reliever. When you are skydiving, you focus on that skydive and nothing else. This keeps away all the distractions of life. No room for stray thoughts or worries here. The intense focus and the pump of adrenaline leave you feeling mentally and physically cleansed.

And yes, the adrenaline is no doubt a part of it. Your body responds to the rush of adrenaline into it, bringing with it a sense of excitement and a surge of energy. Our human bodies are made to produce adrenaline as a survival mechanism and it is being regarded more and more as a necessary part of the human experience and overall health. Something any skydiver could have already told you a long time ago.

Stepping out the door of a flying airplane has other benefits too. It makes you mentally tough. It takes a lot of mind control to go against what you have been taught about danger since a child, get a hold of your thoughts, and realize that yes, it is okay to step out that door. You acquire an increased awareness of all that is around you. You develop a confidence in yourself and a quick response as events happen around you. The sense of accomplishment is incredible. Knowing you met your fear, took control, and pushed yourself to take that step flows over into other parts of your life.

When I did my first skydive a group of us from work went. I organized the outing. Everyone had a blast but I was the only person who did more than one jump. Later, in talking with one of the guys in the group he said to me – I know that whatever I face in life, I can remember that I went up in that plane and did a skydive. If I can summon the courage to do that, I can do anything. It was great.

Okay, so enough of the psychobabble mumbo jumbo. What is the sensation? When you step out the door of a flying airplane you are in freefall until the parachute is deployed. Most skydives are done from around 10,000 ft. to 14,000 ft. providing the skydiver anywhere from 30 seconds to 70 seconds of freefall time. Stick your arm out the window of a car doing 60 mph then imagine your whole body out there going twice as fast – then you start to get a little of the idea of what skydiving feels like.

No one I’ve ever talked to has been able to put into words the sensation of skydiving. Even asking first time jumpers – is there any way to describe what you just did – only elicits a wide-eyed, grinning, no way.

Freefall is such a stupendous sense of freedom. You are flying through the air, able to move your body in 3D. You can fly forward, back-up, move sideways, speed up how fast you are falling and slow down how fast you are falling. Yes, you are continually falling. But during that time you are definitely flying your body. You can do flips and twists. You can stand on your feet or stand on your head. There are absolutely no limits as to which direction you can move your body.

And let there be no doubt – there is not a plane around that can give you the same view. What an awesome sight to view 360 degrees around you – the sky, the horizon, the incredible beauty of the world, right there for you to see with no obstructions. To feel you are a part of that sky.

The parachute flies like a glider; responding to the pilot’s input and slicing you through the sky. It can be flown slowly and smoothly or fast and wild. But either way, with correct pilot input, it would bring you safely and softly to landing on the earth.

Why do we skydive? Who will ever understand the beauty, the freedom, the rush but someone who has been there? Truly, the sky is our playground.

Yesterday afternoon, actor Mark Wahlberg, who will play Lowell boxer Ward, met with scouts for the movie in the lobby of the Lowell DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Lowell to discuss possible locations to film scenes for the feature film.

Potential spots packing a punch in the discussion were Cupples Square in the Highlands section of Lowell, and, specifically, the Highland Tap barroom; the former Foxtail Lounge on Merrimack Street; the now-defunct Route 3 Cinema on Chelmsford Street, just over the line in Chelmsford; and Stevens Street a main thoroughfare in the Highlands where Ward, 43, grew up.

Talk of “dressing up” the Tsongas Arena for a fight scene was bandied about, and Lawrence, the other mill city just down the river, was mentioned, as well.

In addition to Wahlberg, who arrived at the hotel alone wearing sunglasses, Ward’s half-brother, Dicky Eklund, and Rich Farrell, the producer of the HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, were on hand talking with the scouts.

Actor Christian Bale is reportedly portraying Eklund in the movie, which follows Ward’s boxing career from the streets of Lowell and his rocky relationship with his trainer half brother. Eklund was once a professional fighter himself who fought Sugar Ray Leonard before his battles with addiction.

Filming is set to begin in Lowell this July and will take about seven weeks. The Fighter was originally to be directed by Darren Aronofsky of The Wrestler fame, but according to the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com., Aronofsky backed out and was replaced by David O. Russell, who directed I Heart Huckabees and previously worked with Wahlberg on Three Kings.

The Dorchester-born Wahlberg, 37, is the star of such movies as Boogie Nights, The Perfect Storm, Shooter and The Happening, and was nominated for best supporting actor for 2006’s The Departed.

Micky Ward’s final pro record was 38-13, with 27 knockouts.

One question, though, remained. How could the Patriots obtain only a second-round draft choice for a solid, young quarterback and a 12-year veteran leader, linebacker Mike Vrabel?
That mystery persisted Saturday after the Patriots announced the trade for the 34th pick in this year’s draft, which the Chiefs earned with a franchise-worst 2-14 record.

Cassel, who hadn’t started the previous seven seasons with Southern California and the Patriots, led New England to an 11-5 record, but no playoff berth, after Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opener — on a hit by Kansas City’s Bernard Pollard, who said it was an “accident.”

Cassel’s steady improvement sent his stock soaring as he entered free agency. So the Patriots put the franchise tag on him, requiring any team that signed him to give them two first-round picks. But that tag would have cost the Patriots $14.65 million if they kept Cassel as insurance if Brady’s health was questionable.

By shipping him out so early, they must be sure that 2007 NFL MVP Brady will be ready for the regular season after undergoing surgery for torn ligaments in his left knee on Oct. 6 and a later operation for an infection in the knee.
On Feb. 18, Brady said his recovery was on schedule for him to be ready for the opener.

“I’m feeling great. I’m feeling really good. Everything is progressing just as I expected,” he said at a charity event.

Cassel and Vrabel join a team being run by new general manager Scott Pioli, who went to the Chiefs in January after serving as vice president of player personnel for the Patriots, the team he joined in 2002.

Boston Celtics sign Stephon Marbury

“We are very excited to have a player of Stephon’s caliber joining our team. Our entire organization is confident in the belief that Stephon can play an important role in helping us to win another championship,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.

I’m hoping he doesn’t get mixed up and support Michael Vick.

Marbury, a 6′2″, 205lb guard, is entering his 13th season in the NBA and has posted career averages of 19.7 points and 7.8 assists per game. The former Georgia Tech product is third among all active players in assists with 6,396. The two time All-Star has averaged 20 or more points in a season seven times and has averaged eight or more assists nine times. During his career, Marbury has finished in the NBA’s top 5 in assists five times, and has finished in the top 10 nine times.

Some people also like his Marbury sneakers too.

Yes, there have been many classic movies to center on the sport, Wahlberg admits, and, yes, he told us last year, he’d of course like it to hold up to “Raging Bull,” the undisputed champion of the genre.

But Mark Wahlberg has more than just a few moves to his credit these days, he’s also got a healthy dose of fighting words for anybody who thinks that what the world needs least right now is another boxing movie.

But ultimately, his performance as Micky Ward in “The Fighter” is for an audience of one, he said smiling — Micky Ward.

“I want to do him proud. The guy did everything I wish I could have done. He came from nothing, went on to win the world title with all the odds stacked against him. Did it with his mother and his brother,” Wahlberg grinned. “He’s still in the same town to this day. He’s got a regular job. He knows that I’m going to put it all on the line for him. Mickey Ward is going to be [on set, watching me] every single day.”

Co-starring Brad Pitt, “The Fighter” will follow Ward and his brother from their beginnigs in Lowell, Massachusetts to their world championship bouts. It is tentatively scheduled for release next year.

Kimbo Slice vs Thompson Blow by Blow

Thompson is bigger, but not sure he’s got a sufficient edge in size to make a huge difference. Jimmy Lennon is set to introduce the fight. Contrary to what Shamrock said, Thompson might not exactly look scared but he doesn’t appear to be brimming with confidence either. Thompson has that ‘deer caught in headlights’ look–not sure if its focus or what. Now he’s waving his arms around and gesturing toward Kimbo. Good idea, James, make him mad. Not exactly a strategy that many would suggest that he use. Kimbo has that insane glare of blank ferocity that has become his trademark. That ‘grown ass man’ beard alone should be intimidating Thompson. He and LeBron James have the best ‘grown ass man’ beards on the planet. OK, we’re set to go…

ROUND 1:
Bell rings and Thompson rushes over toward Kimbo. Kimbo coming in low. Thompson tries a take down but it doesn’t work. Kimbo appears to have a guillotine choke and now Thompson is in Kimbo’s guard. He tries to get up and Kimbo tries for another choke and lands an elbow to the back of Thompson’s head but he doesn’t get called for it. Shamrock commending Kimbo on his ground control. Thompson pushes Kimbo up against the cage. Knees by Kimbo, Thompson trying for a guillotine while Kimbo responds with big knee strikes. Up against the cage again, under hooks by Thompson and now Kimbo pops out. Back in the middle and Kimbo looking for an opening for a big punch. He delivers but somewhat off balance. Kimbo with side control. Kimbo tries for a choke but Thompson’s sweaty bald head pops out. Thompson tires a kimura but can’t finish it. Kimbo rolls over and gets on top. Elbows by Kimbo. Sweet reversal by Kimbo and he’s trying to set up a kimura. Big punch by Kimbo as the round ends. Thompson’s round 10-9 and its got to be a moral victory to get through round 1.

ROUND 2:

Set to go with round 2, Kimbo looks more pissed than hurt. Thompson tries for a take down but Kimbo retaliates with a bodyshot. Thompson eats a few punches, tries for a take down but Kimbo sprawls out of it nicely. Thompson gets a take down but Kimbo gets a reversal. Guillotine choke attempt by Kimbo, Thompson slides out. He’s got side control now and Kimbo trying to power out of it. Ref stands the two fighters up, now he lets his hands go and is starting to expose Thompson’s weak chin. Kimbo with a combination and unloading some big punches on Thompson. Thompson was hurt but managed to get out of it for a moment with a double leg–Ranallo throws out a DDT reference. He’s got Kimbo against the cage and going for the ground and pound but doesn’t appear to be hurting Kimbo much. Elbows by Thompson with a minute left in the round. Ref threatening to stand the fighters back up–barrage of elbows and fists by Thompson with 20 seconds left. He’s taking a beating against the cage–he’ll make it out of the round but hard to see what kind of condition he’s in. He’s looked better but he could have looked worse. Thompson round again, though the first round was close. 20-18 Thompson on my card.

ROUND 3:
Obviously Kimbo needs to keep this standing. Thompson’s face looks brutal. Kimbo stalking Thompson hits him with a couple of big power punches. Right hand by Kimbo damn near rips Thompson’s ear off. Thompson out on his feet and it looks like his ear is hanging off a la Sebastian Lujan (Google it). Kimbo unleashes a barrage on Thompson who’s out on his feet. Credit to Thompson for standing up but he doesn’t know where he is. The ref jumps in and stops it, and Thompson punches at the ref either due to some bad sportsmanship or maybe he thought it was Kimbo. Kimbo was landing some bombs and if the ref hadn’t stopped it he would have ripped his ear off. The Kimbo haters will callit a premature stoppage–he was definitely tested, but it was a good stoppage with Thompson’s ear hanging by a thread and having eaten four or five uncontested power shots. Kimbo hugs JT.

KIMBO SLICE WINS BY TKO

Not the overwhelmingly decisive win Elite would have wanted for Kimbo but they have to be happy that both of their ‘meal tickets’–Gina Carano and Kimbo–are still undefeated. Thompson was surprisingly game and showed a better chin that he’s exhibited in PRIDE. Stoppage may have been *slightly* premature but the ref had been stopping the fights early all night–no doubt he, CBS and EliteXC wanted to avoid the potential ugliness of a serious injury caused by a late stoppage. In a way it could be the best thing to happen for Kimbo as it’ll just fuel the controversy regarding how good he is and/or could be and that’ll keep the grass roots ‘buzz’ going strong.

Beating Detrot in Detroit tonight should remove any doubts about this team and their coach, Doc Rivers. There were so many great plays made tonight.

The ones that stood out began with Ray Allen still on fire knocking down big time shots. The slump is over for him and after tonight’s celtics game it’s proof that the Celtics are unbeatable when he is shooting the ball well.

This was a real gut check game where we witnessed the mental toughness of this team.

The big shot by Rondo, the steal by Posey and the block by Perkins.

The composure of Paul Pierce after they took away a possible 4 pt play. He just smiled and went on to the next play. I have never seen him this composed.
KG did not shoot the ball well tonight except when it counted, in the post, on the elbow just draining jumpers.
Yes the Celtics are exactly where they wanted to be at this point in the playoffs. I think it is time to really temper the endless loop of negativity against individual players and especially Doc Rivers. This is a wonderful team to embrace.

Let me say it again it again. The Celtics and their coach are learning how to win in the playoffs and so far they have not disappointed themselves or their fans! Now if we can just get a post game party organized with the Celtics Dancers we’d all be happy.

The Celtics started off on an even keel, working hard on the boards while Rondo provided most of the early offense. Boston held a 10-9 edge until Ray Allen canned a three, kicking off a 10-2 run.

The home squad sustained that momentum, and it was 31-21 at the end of the first quarter.

The pace picked up in the second, with the Celtics once again controlling the tempo. Both clubs had problems making shots, though, with Boston relying on a barrage of three balls to keep its edge.

Pierce sandwiched an Allen trey with two of his own in the final minutes, and it was 55-37 at the break.

Boston’s lead continued to grow in the third quarter, and it was 72-47 on a Pierce trey at 6:15.

The game was never in doubt from that point. The Celtics carried a 79-58 cushion into the fourth, and the starters mostly enjoyed the rest of the game from the bench.

Kevin Garnett finished with 12 points for Boston, while Ray Allen ended with 11. Tony Allen and Sam Cassell had 10 apiece in the win.
