One of the biggest things that any computer user hates is a failed hard drive. A great way to surpass this tired old technology is with a solid-state hard drive. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. So what’s another treatment for this terrible disease? Online backup is something that has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years. You join a website and then back your files up onto their server. If anything goes wrong while you have your computer, you simply reformat and then download everything. What’s the problem with this? Time! Downloading two to three hundred gigs if not two to three terabytes could take anywhere from twelve hours to two days depending on your connection.

So what’s the best treatment for your hard drive? Is the best treatment to backup your data through a wired or wireless hard drive? Or is it to invest in a monthly payment to an online backup server? What if I told you that neither of these were the right answer? However, since they have moving parts like platters, heads, spindles, and magnetic surfaces, they are extremely susceptible to failing. Traditional hard drives can be very slow also. For a hard disk to start the drive has to start spinning and the head has to find the right place on the disk. If a piece of dust or something else finds its way to the drive, the head will not be able to find a file or it’s right place on the drive. With a solid-state drive, none of this will occur because the drive is solely made from physical memory.

Solid-state hard drives are extremely similar to the USB flash drive and can withstand the same beating that you give to your USB flash drives. Because of this, students who are constantly taking their laptops to the library or businesspeople that are on the road a lot should definitely consider upgrading their hard drive to a solid-state device. Since there are no moving parts in the solid-state drive, your computer will be able to handle the occasional bump and grind of a desk or a train pole. Solid-state drives will not only run smother, you will also find that they take up less power during your session. This is great for travelers who need to shoot off emails while on go. This is because the solid-state hard drive is non-volatile, or it doesn’t use an external power source. Since it’s not drawing any power to run a motor, you will enjoy longer battery life.

But there are drawbacks to this kind of drive. One of the biggest drawbacks is that they are not offered in very large capacities. Most of the solid-state drives that you will find will be under one hundred gigs. This is great for businesses and people on the go, but not for personal use. If you’re looking for a great solution to data loss, buy a solid-state hard drive for your computer and then use a wired backup to a 1TB hard drive.

Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to approve historic health care reform legislation.

I know first hand how providing access to affordable health care isn’t a political issue, but a deeply personal one for every family. My late husband Paul waged a long, courageous fight against cancer and during that time, our family had the benefit of excellent care from extraordinarily able and dedicated professionals. I understand the fear and helplessness so many feel when faced with an illness in their family. But I have also experienced the hope our health care system can offer and shudder to think what our experience might have been if our family had been uninsured. I ran for Congress over two years ago because I believe that every American deserves access to the same level of high quality care that my family received. Today we took a step toward making that a reality.

For the last year and a half, Congress has been debating the best way to reform our broken health care system. This effort was born out of the reality that if nothing is done to rein in exploding health care costs, increasing numbers of families will no longer be able to afford coverage, businesses will no longer be able to offer health insurance to their employees, and our unsustainable deficits and long-term debt will continue to grow. These realities will compromise our country’s future competitiveness, and perhaps most importantly, our own health and well-being. This debate about how best to address problems with our health care system has also been echoed at town hall meetings, diners and coffee shops, and at kitchen tables across the country.

I have made it a point to talk with as many Fifth District residents as possible and seek their input and views over the past 15 months. Through my Congress On Your Corner program which has taken me to every corner of our district, at town hall meetings, during meetings in each of my offices, and in regular visits to the communities that I represent, I have had literally thousands of conversations with those I represent on this subject.

I have heard from small business owners about how the cost of health care is preventing them from expanding their business and forcing them to seriously consider laying off workers just to make ends meet. I have talked with Fifth District residents who have been denied coverage based on a preexisting medical condition and the painful consequences of not having access to medical care as a result. I have met with seniors who cannot afford the prescription drugs that they need to stay healthy. I have met with doctors and nurses who would like nothing better than to be able to provide care to their patients based on their medical needs, not on what their insurance plan covers. I have heard from residents who simply want to keep the plan and doctor that they currently have. And, I heard from one of the district’s major employers who said providing health care for all Americans is a moral necessity.

Because this health care reform legislation addresses these many problems and accomplishes many of the goals that I believe are essential to making our system of health care more affordable, accessible and sustainable, I voted to support it this evening.

The bill takes several critical steps to address our system’s out of control costs. First, by requiring insurance companies to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms, colonoscopies, and routine vaccinations. For example, if a senior chooses not to get a mammogram because she could not afford it, or because it was not covered in her insurance plan, she is at greater risk of developing breast cancer and letting that cancer grow, unchecked, requiring even more expensive and potentially less effective care later on. We can avoid these additional costs and this unnecessary suffering by providing access to preventive care.

The bill helps move towards a system in which we pay doctors for the quality of care they provide, rather than the number of tests and procedures they perform. It invests in electronic health records, which will avoid the cost of duplicative tests and treatments. And it makes use of comparative effectiveness research – which will help doctors ensure that patients get the best care possible.

It reduces the growing cost of health care premiums and co-pays by ensuring that health insurers cannot implement excessive rate increases, and requires them to spend at least 85% of premiums on providing consumers with additional benefits, rather than on profits and overhead costs. By permitting young Americans to stay on their parents plan until the age of 26, the bill will provide them with increased financial flexibility at a time in their lives when insurance is often difficult to afford or is not offered by their employers.

Approximately 6 million seniors – 7,400 of whom live in the Fifth District – currently fall into the Medicare ‘donut hole’, the gap in which prescription drugs are not covered. This bill ensures those seniors will see that gap in coverage completely closed over time. Contrary to what some critics have claimed, the bill does not reduce Medicare benefits in any way; in fact, the improvements made to Medicare strengthen the program for today’s seniors and future generations and are why the bill has garnered the support of the AARP.

Women are uniquely impacted by our broken health care system, and this bill enacts reforms that will have a tremendously positive effect on the lives of women all over our country. It prohibits the practice of ‘gender rating’, in which insurers can charge women many times more in premiums than their male counterparts, often for less comprehensive coverage. It prohibits discrimination based on so-called ‘pre-existing conditions’ such as a history of domestic violence or cesarean sections. And it prohibits insurers from denying maternity care to a woman who is already pregnant. It prohibits discrimination based on so-called ‘pre-existing conditions’ such as a history of domestic violence or cesarean sections. And it prohibits insurers from denying maternity care to a woman who is already pregnant. Many women are presently forced to rely on their tax refunds to pay medical bills, instead of having regular access to care.

Small businesses are not required to offer health insurance to their employees under this bill, but for those who do, they will have access to an Exchange where they can shop for plans that will be much less expensive than what is currently offered. This is because insurers will be forced to compete for their business in a transparent manner, and because they will be able to band together and use their collective purchasing power to get low-cost, high quality plans much like large employers have access to now. Small businesses will also be eligible for a tax credit to pay for 50% of the cost of premiums for their employees. This is not something that is currently available to small businesses in Massachusetts, and is an added benefit because of national health care reform.

In fact, the bill holds many benefits that will directly impact residents in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Many middle class families who do not currently qualify for subsidies through the Commonwealth Connector will qualify because of national reform. For example, a family of three making up to $73,240 a year will be eligible for subsidies that will make insurance more affordable for them. Insurers in Massachusetts will no longer be allowed to implement lifetime or annual caps on benefits, ensuring that all residents of the Commonwealth can count on their insurance no matter how sick they get or how seriously they need to see a doctor. This legislation invests in more primary care doctors and nurses, which ensures that there are more providers available to care for patients in our state. Small businesses in the Commonwealth who offer health insurance to their employees will be eligible for a tax credit to pay for the cost of that coverage. Finally, Massachusetts taxpayers will no longer have to pay for the emergency care that uninsured patients across the country currently receive.

While access to care is not a pervasive problem in Massachusetts, tens of millions of Americans do not have health care coverage they can afford and that number increases by 14,000 every day. The legislation takes significant steps towards covering all Americans, while enabling anyone happy with their current plan to keep it, facts which have earned it the endorsement of the American Medical Association, Alliance for Retired Americans, Consumers Union, Families USA, Massachusetts Medical Society, and many other leading health care provider and patient advocacy groups.

I also stated when health care reform was first being crafted that it should not add to our debt and deficit. Not only is this bill fully paid for, it cuts the federal deficit by more than $143 billion dollars over the course of the next 10 years, and reduces it by another $1.2 trillion in the decade that follows according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Additionally, more than 40 of the nation’s leading economists – including three winners of the Nobel Prize – signed a letter urging the swift passage of comprehensive health reform to slow ‘unsustainable’ health care spending facing our country.

As with any undertaking of this magnitude, the legislation is not perfect. I was disappointed that attempts to add a public option, which would have further lowered health care costs and increased competition, were unsuccessful. And, this legislation unfortunately contains hurdles that place unnecessary restrictions on a woman’s reproductive rights.

But, overall, I strongly believe that this bill succeeds in expanding access to health care, takes many commonsense steps to rein in health care costs, and reflects so many of the concerns that my constituents have raised with our current health care system. It is for these reasons that I voted in support of this historic legislation today.

Texting and Driving is a No No!

So a lot of people are getting behind this move with the ban, texting while driving. We’re getting tech guru, Mario Armstrong joining us via Skype, he’s Skyping for us this morning from Baltimore. Good morning to you, I see you’ve got the whole – the football theme going here, but we’re talking … we’re talking about this technology, does this stuff really work? Explain it to us again, give us more of a detailed understanding of just how this thing keeps you from texting.

Yeah, so what I did TJ is I actually downloaded the software right onto my phone. In this case it was on to a Blackberry. The software that I tested, there are several different companies, the software I tested is by one called ‘iZup’ I Z U P. And essentially TJ, what it does is it detects motion, so as soon as the phone travels faster than five miles per hour it essentially shuts the phone down from all of its operations that you could typically do on the phone, typically being able to make text messages or make phone calls. It shuts it down and opens up an application on the device automatically by itself.

Well it opened up an application, again, what is that application we’re talking about?

Yeah, so that application is called iZup, I Z U P. And what it does TJ, is it basically only allows you to dial three numbers, these could be family or friends or parents, and 911. So you’re locked. You can’t do anything else but those four numbers if you’re moving in a vehicle.

Now this is a pretty serious and dangerous thing we know. We have some numbers here I believe, of just how dangerous this stuff is. Almost 6,000 people, by some estimates we’re talking about here, almost 6,000 people killed, 515,000 injured. These numbers are coming to us officially. Now there is a movement that of course…

That’s right.

And some states have done it to curb it by passing laws.

It’s not enough though, no.

But there’s not enough of this technology you’re talking about though, unless the cell phone maker puts it on there, everybody else, it’s up to you to go get it on your phone yourself, correct?

You’re bringing up a couple of great points. Number one, we’re talking about only 19 states. Look at some of these numbers, only 19 states and Washington D.C. ban the use of text while driving. So we’ve still got a lot of work still yet to go on that. And then when you look at the amount of people that are using cell phones, 276 million people, and then the amount of text messages that are happening TJ, look at this number, this is bloomy away, and this is just the first half of 2009, 740 billion text messages are being sent, this is almost double from last year. So people are using these devices more and more. And you know, the thing is TJ, I’m not really for using technology to fight this problem. I really think that this is a problem of discipline and a problem of our culture, but hey, the technology worked, I tested it and I’ve got to tell you if that’s what it’s going to take to have safer drivers on the road, I’m behind it.

You know, that’s a great point, but you’re still talking about we have to take our own personal responsibility.

That’s right.

Either you can force yourself to take responsibility by getting the software or you could just use your commonsense and use some good judgement and not text while you’re driving. One more thing here, how much does this thing cost to get that software on the cell phone?

Yeah, well you just – yeah, you just mentioned, it would be free if we did it your way.

Yeah.

This shouldn’t cost anything. But …but the way this – the particular program I tested was 4.99 a month. So that’s not cheap.

Wow!

You know I really think the companies should just go to a one-time fee. And really I think car manufacturers are taking a step further and require hands-free capabilities in all vehicles. It would help to curb this problem.

That’s a point there, but man, five dollars a month, you’re right, that’s not exactly cheap. It’s not a one-time fee.

Five dollars a month, yeah. So here’s the deal, I use this man, I recommend the Jawbone Bluetooth as a hands-free set. This is the best one on the market that I’ve tested. I’ve tested a lot of them out there, and I’ve got to tell you, if you are going to talk and drive use the Jawbone icon, it’s just one of the best units I’ve tested out there. So if you have to do it, at least start using some technology to make you a safer driver.

Alright, Mario Armstrong is our tech guru and also the new paid spokesperson for Jawbone, it appears.

My Review of the Apple Ipad

After wanting to see a review of the new Apple iPad tablet computer I complained enough and a friend told me she was getting one and I can do a review on it as soon as she got it. Well today is the day.

My Apple iPad Tablet Review

The Apple iPad is the addition to the must-have list of the world’s trendiest geeks and gadget lovers. However, much of the excitement has been thwarted by numerous comments and reaction on the newly released iPad from Apple manufacturers.

The Apple iPad is manufactured to give the world a new gadget that is a cross between an iPod Touch and a laptop although it still gives me that iPod Experience. Apple iPad contains smart features such as those in iPod touch and also boasts internet connectivity faster than any smart phones but smaller than most laptops. Apple iPad is a great addition to the world’s line of high tech mobile gadgets. Here is a list of the positive and negative aspects of the Apple iPad:

Apple iPad Pros:

1. Apple iPad has a bigger touch screen display great for browsing websites, running programs and controlling webpage sizes. The iPad hosts faster internet browsing and a more enjoyable gaming experience. With the Apple IPad, you just need to flick and swish with your fingers to get to great applications in a trendy framework.
2. Apple iPoud contains a new program called iWork suite which you allows you to create your own presentation or spreadsheet.
3. If you are an avid reader, then the Apple IPad contains software that runs e-books perfectly. The IPad contains an iBooks application that allows read books and shift pages with a touch or swipe of your finger.

Apple iPad Cons:

1. Although iBooks is an ingenious addition to iPad, the backlighting is specifically problematic as it uses e-Ink technology which makes your eyes tired and wary if you read for a long time.
2. The iPad unfortunately does not have multitasking capabilities which means you can’t listen to your playlist while playing mobile games.
3. The Apple iPad is disappointingly unable to play any videos when browsing the internet because it does not support Adobe Flash Player, as of yet.
4. Sadly, you cannot take pictures or join social networking sites as it has no camera and no Chat functions.
The Apple iPad is a great device with new features, impeccable screen and faster web browsing capabilities. However, it will be tough for people to give up their Amazon Kindle, Sony reader, iPod touch or iPhone over the Apple IPad.
5. Looks like this is another product from Apple that can’t take the abuse either. There’s no way to prevent ipod scratches so it’ll get dinged up pretty quickly.

Find a Job Using Twitter, Facebook and Social Media Sites

Job hunting is time consuming. In the past, the best way to find a job was to research the companies you want to work for, send your cover letter and resume and hope for the best. The only alternatives to this method were networking, responding to classified ads and using headhunters or recruiters. However, the latter two of these methods often result in few interviews.

The first method, networking, is still the best way to get a job. People who know your strengths are more likely to hire you. Fortunately, you can now use the latest technology to network and quickly find a job using Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.

How to Use Twitter to Find a Job

Twitter is a microblogging social media site where you submit updates of up to 140 characters.

In addition to posting what you are actually doing, you can use the site to connect with people in your industry or who work at companies where you want to work.

Follow the steps below to start networking using Twitter:

Set up an account using your name. Make sure you write a bio. Even though you have only 140 characters to use, try to incorporate keywords pertaining to your job search.
Tweet (post updates) regularly. It does not have to be every hour, but try to do it at least once a week. Make sure you post only things that you would want your future boss to read. Be yourself.
Follow people who you would like in your network. Start with the companies where you want a job. Follow people in your industry who inspire you. Follow people who follow you and are in your industry.
Be helpful. If people in your network have questions and you have answers, reply to them. Commenting can’t hurt
Be a participant. Even if you choose not to follow everyone who follows you, say hello to those who follow you and thank them.
Find job alerts on Twitter. Several websites have applications that will help you search or subscribe to job alerts on Twitter. Examples include TweetMyJobs, TweetBeep and TwitHire.

How to use Facebook to Find a Job

Facebook is the most social of the social media sites. While the site features updates like those on Twitter, there are many other ways to share information and socialize on Facebook. From playing games to taking polls or joining groups to becoming fans of pages, there are plenty of ways to interact on Facebook. Often people can have a great fear of public speaking but they’re a social media rockstar online.

Most of the guidelines for using Twitter also apply to Facebook. Make sure you socialize with people in your industry. Remember that information on Facebook is public, like the information on Twitter. Although you can control the flow of some of this information, assume that your boss (present or future) may be reading what you write. With that said, make sure that you only socialize with people who have an understanding that you are sharing your profile with potential employers. You do not want your Facebook friends to post anything that would jeopardize your job search.

Here are some additional guidelines for using Facebook to find a job:

Use your profile to highlight your strengths. Make sure your education and career information is
accurate.
Use a professional looking profile photo. Know what photos are posted of you. Make sure there are no photos shared that show you in a way that you would not want to show a potential employer. However, show that you can have fun and you have a sense of humor. Employers often want well rounded employees.
Use the search feature to find people that you want in your network. Use the groups and fan pages for the same purpose.
Participate. For social media sites to work, you must participate. However, remember that you are conducting a job search. Make sure you prioritize networking with relevant people.

How to Find a Job using LinkedIn

Like Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn is another popular social media site. LinkedIn focuses on business. Like the other sites, you have a profile, a place to post updates, the ability to search and the ability to join groups. However, all of these features focus on your career life. Your profile is structured like a resume. Your contacts are based on your relationships. If you cannot select a true relationship with the person, you cannot add them to your network. However, there are ways to connect with the connections of the people in your network.

LinkedIn is a great way to build your professional network. In addition to the methods mentioned for the other sites, use these methods to grow your network using LinkedIn:

Use the recommendation feature to get recommendations from members of our network. This is a great way to highlight your strengths.
Research the companies you want to work for. Look at the profiles of people who work for the companies you are researching. See where they worked before they went to that company. Likewise, use the Company Profile section to see where people tend to go after they leave the company. Check this page to find out if the company is hiring and to connect with new hires.
Use the connections to find the hiring manager. If you search for a job, pay attention to the degrees of distance from you. Stay within 2 degrees and you definitely have a connection at that company. A friend of a friend can help you find the hiring manager. Use these connections to find out more details about the job and what kind of candidate the company seeks.

For all social media sites, participation is required. The participation can be as little as an hour a week spent posting an update or searching for someone relevant to join your network. No matter which sites you use, understand that it may take time to build your network.

Start building it before you need a job, if possible. You never know who you will meet and what opportunities they will present. Building your social network will save you the time of sitting and talking to recruiters and only having interviews in their offices, instead of at the companies you desire.

When Can I Get My Apple iPad Tablet?

Did you hear what the price of this Apple iPad tablet was? It will run you as low as $500 for the smaller model, the larger model with more memory is about $700, that news just coming in to us. Let me give you some other details, anyone interested in this device would want to know that you’ll have to wait until you can get it. It takes anywhere from three months to get to you for the large 3G models and about a full month to get to you for the non-3G models. The data plans, for 250mb per month, it costs $15 per month and unlimited data for $30 a month.

ATT will remain the provider and they will allow free use of Wi-Fi hotspots as well, no contracts canceled any time. I almost had a Steve Jobs heart attack when I heard there weren’t more providers but, on this news, if you look at Apple’s share prices, they’ve actually fallen some four percent. But there are some specs of this device that make it stand out, nothing ground breaking though.

Interesting, so it’s not the… look, it’s always – Apple are always on a steady plot ahead and do something bigger and better. But you’re saying people are disappointed that it’s not as much as they thought it would be, not as big a deal as they thought it would be?

Well look, what Apple does when they approach this kind of event is they say and reveal absolutely nothing until the moment the iPad takes the stage to build anticipation. The only noteworthy thing I would pull away from this is that they’re releasing something called e-books.

That essentially makes this iPad a direct competitor above the other e-readers out there, Amazon’s Kindle for example and all the Amazon Kindle publishing out there.

If you rewind to this Christmas, more e-books were sold through Amazon than physical books. So Apple wants to capitalize on that seismic shift that the device – I have some papers here, this is not it – but it can be in a landscape or portrait view which allows you to read newspapers and magazines, also academic books as well. So Apple is hoping to hang on to its existing customer base, the folks that love iTunes, the folks that love Google Maps and all the other applications, and then build on that with e-books and other people who enjoy reading their newspapers and magazines on a device. So this iPad, seismic shift, we’ll have to wait and see. But they did keep the price below the thousand dollars, which many analysts believed they would need to do to attract you and I, I mean any regular Joes to even think about purchasing this.

I wish someone would review Apple iPad tablet and its features compared to other ebook readers like Amazon’s and Sony’s.

The response to the iPhone is overwhelming. The App Store has captured the hobbyist’s imagination like no other platform in recent memory. Hobbyists have made—and will continue making—money from their creations sold on the App Store. And we aren’t necessarily talking about high-minded technical innovations. The media has reported that
apps that make your iPhone pass gas have made folks hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rival farting App developers have even gone so far as suing one another over the App Store’s precious revenue. The iPhone and the App Store are here to stay—well, at least until the next big thing comes along like iphone mms.

Like every modern operating system, language, and programming tool of any importance, Mac OS X and the iPhone’s operating system (also OS X) were built using the C programming language. Not the Objective-C programming language and Cocoa framework, not the C++ programming language, but C. Objective-C is an object-oriented language built using C.

Cocoa is a framework that hides difficult C programming tasks with easy-to-use objects programmed in Objective-C. But behind every Cocoa object you construct, you find C code defining the construct.

Installing an application on an iPhone or iPod touch requires iPhone Developer membership. After you have a membership, installing an application is not difficult, as Apple’s Developer Portal provides step-by-step instructions. Membership in the iPhone Dev Center on the Developer Connection Web site is a prerequisite to downloading the iPhone SDK. However, to install applications and eventually sell applications on the App Store requires membership in the iPhone Developer Program. Apple offers two membership types: corporate and individual. You must apply, pay a $99 fee, and receive acceptance before becoming a full individual member. After becoming a member, you are granted access to the iPhone Developer Program’s Program Portal. This site is where you obtain certificates, assign new devices, create application IDs, and create provisioning profiles.

Up until the release of the iPhone OS 3.0, the iPhone was a difficult platform for developing multimedia applications. The capabilities were there, as you could always resort to using low-level C APIs to program audio and video, but the higher-level APIs were strictly undocumented and off limits. And as for the multimedia on a device that was placed there by iTunes?

Forget it, off limits. Any media you wished playing in your application had to either be packaged as part of your application or streamed from a server. That restriction changed with iPhone OS 3.0; now you can access and play a user’s audio iTunes multimedia, making the iPhone and iPod touch the most programmable portable music players ever released. Explore the basic multimedia capabilities of the iPhone and iPod touch.

You first learn how to play system sounds and longer sounds. You then move to the Media Player framework, where you use the framework to select and play a user’s iTunes audio multimedia. After learning to play iTunes media, you then learn how to play a video using the Media Player framework’s video player.

Once you get this far and you’re up and running with the iPhone SDK, I recommend reading these books to further your knowledge and getting building your own iPhone and iTouch applications.

Companies Aren’t Archiving Emails. Are You Archiving Your Own Emails?

We’ve all seen Microsoft Outlook email archiving pop up and often they hit yes to archive old emails without knowing what it does. What is email archiving and how does it help? Is it worth it for the average person to archive emails? Does it save space or make it quicker to open emails? Many users have these questions when they first hear the term email archiving. Email archiving is an amazing tool for businesses, although for personal use email archiving may not offer many benefits.

Boston Mayor Isn’t Archiving his Emails

In the case of Boston City Hall, a close advisor to Mayor Menino has been reported to have deleted items from his inbox, sent box and the deleted/trash folder on a daily basis prior to traditional end-of-day tape backup. Now the Massachusetts Secretary of State has forced the hiring of an independent expert to retrieve City Hall emails that were “improperly deleted.” If a Microsoft Exchange archiving solution had been implemented, these email records, including email, calendar items and records of email deletions, would have been captured immediately as they happened, regardless of what was stored on backup tapes at the end of the day.

Email archiving allows a company to store emails on a private server for its employees to refer back too at a later time. Many companies often will send out updates on a new procedure, which can be missed if a person that works for the company was not in the office that day. Email archiving can also be an excellent tool for training new employees on current and new procedures. Once you access the server files, it is easy to direct an employee to a certain file or old email that is in the system saving someone hours looking for it and resending it to single or multiple users.

Why is Archiving Emails Important?

One example of this is, imagine you run into a problem at work that only happens every 2 months, you remember getting the email on the proper procedure, although you have had so many emails since the update you just cannot find it. Rather than spending hours looking for one single email, often times a company server is available with file named procedures in email archives, for that problem, and you can just open, read it or you can re-email it to yourself and flag it for later use. Email archiving saves time and space on employee’s personal computer for that reason alone.

Personal email archiving may not seem to make much since when it is easy to simply store important emails in a private folder; however, many users often forget to move an email that they need until it is too late. Making auto email archiving a nice feature, it is also very useful with so many professional email users now working from home as much as from work. Smart phone users are very used to synchronizing emails at home as well as work, and email archiving those emails to home can be as much of a time saver while working at home too, although they do take up space on your personal computer.

Email archiving may not seem like it is very useful when you haven’t had a need for it, until you need an important email and find that you do not have it. The pop up from Microsoft may have convinced many users to use email archiving without knowing what email archiving can do. Now knowing you possibly still have those emails you thought you lost can now be a major cause for a sigh of relief. Go check that email archive folder and see if you can find what you are looking for, and never forget where it is again.

Finally the iPhone Gets MMS This Friday

So much for the “late summer” release date Apple. At least the iPhone is getting it’s upgrade to be able to send and receive images and video via MMS. I knew the iPhone was good for more than just talking on the phone and finding local prices of houses.

via AT&T’s Facebook page: MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25. Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready …to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time.

AT&T has posted another encouraging note via Facebook that they will stick to schedule and roll out full MMS capability on Friday. The wireless giant confirmed that we can expect the service to be up and running by “Late Morning” Pacific Time.

AT&T did promise that the iPhone’s innate ability to send MMS messages would make its American debut by September 25—this Friday, in case you don’t have a calendar handy. Is AT&T going to disappoint us (again) or will it deliver the goods? Count on the latter, according to no less a source than AT&T itself—or at least the corporate behemoth’s Facebook page. Glad we don’t rely on AT&T’s announcement for anything like finances or our health. Did I mention there is an easy way to stay healthy while sitting at your computer?

On that site, the carrier promises that MMS support will launch late in the morning, Pacific time, this Friday. “The new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes,” AT&T says, promising to provide more details when the launch begins. (Once the update is live, you’ll be prompted to install it the next time you connect your phone to iTunes. It’s not a whole software update, just a small installation of additional settings onto your iPhone.)

As a reminder, the ability to send and receive photos, contact info, audio files, and locations via the iPhone’s Messages application was added with Apple’s iPhone 3.0 update—AT&T just didn’t support it. That’s not the case in at least 76 other countries where iPhone 3G users already take advantage of MMS support.

Needless to say, a lot of people will be paying attention to AT&T on Friday. And if this report on DSLreports.com is accurate, that’s making the carrier very nervous, as it rushes to beef up its infastructure to support the expected burst of activity. Let’s hope they don’t screw up my cell phone records again and send the bill somewhere else.

Here’s hoping that AT&T’s network is ready for millions of iPhone users to send a few test MMS messages starting late Friday morning.

How to Pick and Bump a Lock – Just In Case You Need To

Pin tumbler locks, from the cheapest to the most expensive all work in roughly the same way. The key slides down the keyway in the inner cylinder of the lock. As it moves, the cuts in the key move stacks of two or more pins, moving in holes drilled through the outer and inner cylinder. Small springs behind these pins push the pins back after a high point on the key has passed. When the correct key is all the way in and the ‘shoulder’ of the key rests against the inner cylinder, all the gaps between the pins inside the lock align on the ‘sheer line’, and the inner cylinder is free to turn.

Picking locks

Lock can be ‘picked’. A skilled operator can use tools to feel and move individual pins in the lock. Lockpicking allows one to open a lock by exploiting the fact that the pin stacks are never perfectly aligned. This causes some pins to be stuck between the inner and outer cylinder before others. It’s almost like a game of patience. Like a brain sharpening game. Because of this, one can feel that certain pins are correctly aligned before all the pins are aligned. And because the outer pins that would jam before others will remain on the outside of the inner cylinder after the lock is turned slightly, one can successively place the pins in the correct position and open the lock. Lockpicking takes quite a bit of practice. If you’re looking for fun, go play scary maze game or something.

Apart from intelligence professionals, criminals and locksmiths practicing it, lockpicking has become a regular sport, complete with official clubs and championships. It’s not like people are getting your online degree in lockpicking. Lock manufacturers have defended new locks against picking by inserting so-called ‘mushroom pins’, by making keyways narrower (providing less space for tools) and by lowering the mechanical tolerances of the lock manufacturing process. Going over the details of locks and lock picking would be outside of the scope of this paper.

Snapper pick, lockpick gun and vibrating tools

Another means of opening locks without the key is by using a snapper pick, lockpick gun or vibrating tool. These devices all exploit Newton’s law that says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Most people are familiar with Newton’s cradle, a device which is often used to demonstrate this law.
If a ball all the way on the left or right side is lifted up and let loose to collide with the row of suspended balls, this ball will transfer all its energy to the next ball and so forth, until the ball on the other end moves to swing away from the other balls. When it swings back, the process is reversed and the original ball swings up. The same principle can be observed during a game of billiards: one ball hits another one, and this ball continues onward whereas the first ball now lies still.

This principle can be used to open locks: if impulse energy is transferred to the first pin, it will tend to stay in place and the second pin tends to move away from the first one, until the spring stops it and pushes it back to touch the first pin.

A ‘lockpick gun’ such as the one shown below will, when the trigger is pulled, tension a spring and then when the trigger is pulled all the way use the force of that spring to snap the needle up for a short distance, but with a very sharp and powerful motion. By positioning this needle into the lock, just touching the pins, and then pulling the trigger, one tries to hit all the pins simultaneously. By then making the lock turn in the split-second before all the upper pins are pushed back by the springs in the lock, one can open the lock. The amount of turning force and the timing with which to apply it require some training.

Vibrating picks use the same principle except many times a second, requiring less training on the part of the operator. A snapper pick is the simpler version of a pick gun.
The lock industry has created locks that are more resistant to this technique. More resistant locks have narrower keyways, preventing tools from being inserted in the first place, and making it harder to transfer the impulse energy to the pins. More resistant locks also have smaller tolerances, creating less space for the pins to bounce around.

Bumping locks

Bumping, sometimes also called ‘Rapping’, has been a known technique for at least the past 50 years. A bump key is described in Marc Tobias’s reference work “Locks, Safes, and Security” [4] on page 603. Few people use the technique, and the method does not seem successful against a large number of locks unless the ‘minimal motion method’ described below is used. It takes great hand-eye coordination, patience, cognitive fitness and a technical mind to understand something you can’t see at the moment.

Once correctly used, we found this technique to be immensely powerful, allowing a large variety of locks to be opened. We did not invent this technique, and others probably thought of some of the same refinements we did. We do feel bumping is underestimated, and this paper exists to point to its effectiveness.

So we have a basic trick to open a lock by making the second pin jump away from the first, but no efficient means to apply this energy to the bottom pin. As it turns out, the best way to transfer energy to the pins is using a key. First of all, we need a ‘bump key’ for the lock in question. A bump key is a key in which all the cuts are at maximum depth. The picture below shows bump keys for various locks. Bump keys are sometimes called ’999′ keys because all cuts are at maximum (9) depth.

As you can see you can cut bump keys for both regular pin tumbler locks as well as for ‘dimple locks’, whether ‘pin-in-pin’ or not. Just remember to take away all the material that could be taken away by the deepest combination for that position.

There are machines that will cut a key based on the numbers that represent the depth at each position. Having access to such a machine speeds up the process of creating a bump key that has the cuts in the exact right position, although one can also use a file and a steady hand to create one. Bump keys, once cut, can be copied on regular key-cutting equipment. You do not necessarily need to have an uncut key (called ‘blank’) to make a bump key: because all the cuts of a bump key are at maximum depth, any used key for a given lock can be converted into a bump key.

Creating a Bump Key

The perfect lock does not exist. With enough training, tools and time, almost any lock can be manipulated. Practical security is almost always a trade-off between the cost of the lock and the time and effort needed for an attacker to open the lock. However: in terms of mechanical lock security, we believe that this vulnerability exposes a fundamental flaw in a large number of existing mechanical lock designs. Resistance against this attack will have to be incorporated in all future high-end locks, and judging by their own design criteria a large number of high-end locks seen today must be considered flawed.

Blue M&Ms Prevent Paralysis and Reduce Spinal Injury

blue-mms A new study has revealed that a common food dye that gives M&Ms and Gatorade their blue tint might help in treating spinal cord injury.

It has shown promise for preventing the additional – and serious – secondary damage that immediately follows a traumatic injury to the spine.

In the new study, researchers found that compound called Brilliant Blue G (BBG) stops the cascade of molecular events that cause secondary damage to the spinal cord in the hours following a spinal cord injury.

In the August 2004 cover story of Nature Medicine, scientists detailed how ATP, the vital energy source that keeps our body’s cells alive, quickly pours into the area surrounding a spinal cord injury shortly after it occurs, and paradoxically kills off what are otherwise healthy and uninjured cells.

This helped understand how secondary injury occurs in spinal cord patients.

It also laid out a potential way to stop secondary spinal injury, by using oxidized ATP, a compound known to block ATP’s effects.

The rats with damaged spinal cords who received an injection of oxidized ATP were shown to recover much of their limb function, to the point of being able to walk again, ambulating effectively if not gracefully.

It is previously known that the receptor – called P2X7 – plays a role in regulating the deaths of immune cells such as macrophages.

In the new study, the research team led by Dr Maiken Nedergaard, professor of Neurosurgery and director of the Centre for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Centre discovered that P2X7 is carried in abundance by neurons in the spinal cord.

It allows ATP to latch onto motor neurons and send them the flood of signals that cause their deaths, worsening the spinal cord injury and resulting paralysis.

So the team set out to find a compound that not only would prevent ATP from attaching to P2X7, but could be delivered intravenously.

In a fluke, Nedergaard discovered that BBG.

‘Because BBG is so similar to this commonly used blue food dye, we felt that if it had the same potency in stopping the secondary injury as oxidized ATP, but with none of its side effects, then it might be great potential treatment for cord injury,’ Nedergaard added.

The team found that an intravenous injection of BBG proved to significantly reduce secondary injury in spinal cord-injured rats, who improved to the point of being able to walk, though with a limp.

However, Nedergaard cautions that while these findings offer a promising new way of treating spinal cord injury, it is still years away from possible application in patients.

Earlier today, I went to downtown Seattle to Gnomedex 5.0, and stood up in front of 300 tech influentials, enthusiasts and leaders to talk about some really exciting things that weâ€™ve been working on for the past several months.
