8:00pm – How I Met Your Mother
A man named Ted, played by Josh Radnor, tells his kids how he met the love of his life, through flashbacks, 25 years in the future. The bored kids sit on the couch and listen as dad regales them with tales of his pursuit of romance, only to learn at the end of the episode that the woman in the story didn’t turn out to be their mom. The sitcom’s secondary character, Barney Stinson played by Neil Patrick Harris, is a real standout often stealing the show.

8:30pm – The Class
In this show a group of former 3rd grade classmates reunite 20 years later and rekindle their relationship. In the first episode Ethan Hass, played by Jason Ritter, was throwing a surprise party for his girlfriend which he met in 3rd grade. To make the evening special he contacted all of his former 3rd grade classmates and invited them. Only a handful of the classmates actually showed up and those classmates now makeup the cast of this very funny show.

9:00pm – Two and a Half Men
A Malibu bachelor’s (Charlie Sheen) carefree life is changed when his brother (John Cryer) and 10 year old nephew (Angus T. Jones) move in with him. Briskly written and performed, the sitcom has fun spoofing Charlie Sheen’s bad boy reputation and exploiting John Cryer’s quirky, nervous energy, perfected in a number of 1980’s coming of age films.

9:30pm – Rules of Engagement
Comedy that explores relationships through the eyes of two couples and their single male friend. One couple is newly engaged, the other is long married, and the single guy is looking for love, so each has a unique perspective on the male/female condition.

10:00pm – CSI:Miami
A spin off from CSI:Crime Scene Investigation follows a South Florida forensics team headed by a brooding Horatio Cane, played by David Caruso. Against a backdrop of simmering ethnic and cultural tensions, Cane’s team probes cases similar to those of their Las Vegas counterparts.

ABC Network

8:00pm – Wife Swap
Women swap husbands, kids and homes for 10 days to gauge the effect of changes on both families and the lessons learned. Confident that the Brit-hit inspired concept would be successful, ABC, months before the shows premier, cooked up companion specials that exchanged husbands, bosses and even vacations.

9:00pm – Supernanny
A reality show with popular British nursemaid Jo Frost assisting parents in raising children and disciplining them. Based on a U.K. series.

NBC Network

8:00pm – Deal or No Deal
Contestants compete for cash inside sealed briefcases in this game show hosted by Howie Mandel

9:00pm – Heroes
This drama delves into the lives of ordinary people, from all over the world, who gain superpowers, including a young dreamer who believes he can fly, a high school cheerleader who is indestructible, and a heroin-addict artist who can paint the future.

10:00pm – The Black Donnellys
A drama that follows four Irish brothers in New York City and their experiences in organized crime.

FOX Network

8:00pm – Prison Break
A builder gets himself incarcerated to engineer the escape of his death row brother, who was framed for killing the Vice President’s brother. While the set up requires a leap of faith, the drama is consistently taut as Michael Scofield, played by Wentworth Miller, maneuvers to assemble an escape plan and team, while friends investigate his brother’s bogus conviction on the outside.

9:00pm – 24
An exciting and edgy real time action series about U.S. counterterrorist agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) trying to save his country from foreign and domestic enemies in the course of 24 grueling hours (each hour being a separate episode). The series took a great concept and executed it superbly, juggling taut story lines with forceful performances and a stylish gritty look.

There is certainly a lot to choose from on Monday nights. So what will you be watching?

Here’s 5 Reasons Not to Buy a Plasma TV this Superbowl Season.

The purpose of the article was to provide a counterpoint to some of the misinformation being advertised prior to the Superbowl by various retailers and was not a blanket condemnation of Plasma televisions.

Plasma televisions are sleek, sexy and can hang on a wall. In addition to a slim space saving design, Plasma’s offer a wide viewing angle, uniform screen brightness and good colour fidelity. What’s not to love?

Plasma televisions are flat-panel displays that consist of millions of phosphor-coated miniature glass bubbles containing plasma. Each bubble represents one pixel. To produce an image on the plasma panel, electric current flows through the screen which causes the gas inside the glass bubbles to emit ultraviolet rays. The ultraviolet rays then trigger the phosphor coating to produce red, green or blue light.

The number of physical bubbles or pixels inside a plasma television determines the sets Native resolution. DHC recommends you determine the native resolution of any plasma you’re thinking about purchasing. Native resolution is important because it is the source of a tremendous amount of confusion in the minds of consumers which leads to a very common misperception.

The common misperception is that all Plasma televisions are high definition televisions. Instead of being HDTV sets, many plasma sets are Enhanced Definition television (EDTV). If the native resolution of the plasma you are considering is 853 X 480 or something similar then the plasma panel is NOT a high definition television.

Digital Home Canada has learned that many websites and retail flyers are no longer publishing the native resolution of plasma panels preferring to simply say the set has 720p or 1080i capability.

Five Reasons not to buy Plasma
The following are five reasons why Digital Home Canada believes you shouldn’t buy a Plasma television.

Burn In
Burn in occurs when a static image, such as a network icon, is continuously shown and the image is “burned into” the screen. The result is that “burned in” image is visible even when watching other programs.

The actual term burn in is a misnomer (to find out more burn in – click on some of the links listed above) since the screen isn’t actually burned but the unpleasant image left of your screen is all too real.

The effects of burn in on a plasma display are permanent and cannot be erased.

The article and plasma manufacturers go to great lengths to explain how to reduce the likelihood of burn and with proper care and attention DHC agrees that a very determined and careful consumer can avoid the problem.

Although we understand that burn in can be avoided if you are very careful, our attitude is “Do you want really want to buy a $5,000 to $10,000 television set and then constantly worry that it will become an expensive doorstop, because you or your kids, left it on for a few hours on the “wrong” channel ?”

When spending $10,000, we want piece of mind. The risk of burn in is the first reason we would not recommend buying a plasma television.

Too Expensive
True HDTV Plasma’s starts around $6,000 Canadian and go up from there. Many 50″ plasma’s are close to $10,000.

An excellent quality 50″ CRT rear projection television can be had for $2,000, while DLP & LCD projection sets retails for approximately $4,000.

With the extra $6,000 to $8,000 dollars you save by not buying plasma, you could outfit your home with a stunning home theatre system which includes six good quality speakers, DVD player, A/V receiver and more.

The high cost of plasma is the second reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
Costly to Repair and Higher Incidence of Repair
Recently when Digital Home Canada was researching our article Should I buy the Extended Warranty? we were surprised to learn the price for an 2 or 3 year extended warranty on a plasma television was much higher than the cost of a 2 or 3 year warranty on a direct view, LCD, CRT or DLP television after adjusting for the purchase price of the product.

Extended warranty costs are an excellent way to gauge the reliability of a consumer product. If the premiums being asked by the insurance companies are higher, then it indicates the product has a higher rate of repair and failure.

Also noteworthy is that despite the high cost of extended warranties on plasma, burn in is not covered by either the manufacturer’s warranty or an extended warranty. Burn in is considered to consumer misuse and therefore not covered.

The high cost of repair, potential for failure and the lack of a comprehensive warranty is the third reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
Standard Definition Television looks terrible
The next time you are shopping for a television, be sure to take notice of what’s playing on those Plasma panels. We can pretty much guarantee, you won’t see a regular standard definition cable signal.

In our experience, HDTV looks beautiful on a true HDTV plasma panel and DVD’s can almost equally compelling, however, standard television, the stuff you watch everyday, generally looks horrible!

The reason for this poor quality image can be attributable to a number of factors including the stretch mode of the television or the poor quality of the analog or digital signal.

Regardless of the reason, Digital Home Canada we have yet to view a standard definition television program on plasma that we would want to watch in our home.

Despite our opinion, DHC learned long ago that picture quality is a very subjective matter. What looks great to one person can look lousy to someone else.

We recommend that if you’re considering buying a plasma, take the time to watch “regular” television on it before you purchase the set or only use your plasma to watch DVD’s or HDTV.

The poor picture quality of Standard definition signals is the fourth reason why we would not buy a plasma television.

Costly and Time Consuming to Mount on a wall
Since the first Phillips commercial in 2001 showing consumers how they could mount a plasma television on the wall, people have dreamt of hanging their televisions on the wall.

Like every dream, get over it!

The reality is that most plasma sets are never hung on walls. Typically they sit on a tabletop on a stand. A stand, that is as deep and wide as an DLP or LCD projection television set.

Why don’t plasma owners have the set up on the wall?

The primary reason is the wires. A typical plasma set has a ton of connections. component or DVI cables from your cable or satellite receiver, component or DVI cables from your DVD player, other audio cables to and from your A/V receivers, and of course the power cable.

The wires can be neatly tucked and hidden behind the set when it sits on a stand. In our opinion, placing a plasma on a tabletop defeats one of the major reasons people buy the set in the first place.

Finally, if you want to mount the plasma panel on the wall and still have it look attractive, you need to fish cables through your walls. Fishing cables means drilling holes and feeding wires which can be messy, costly and time consuming.

The huge effort and high cost of properly mounting a plasma to a wall is the fifth reason why we would not buy a plasma television.
An Extra Reason – It’s not HDTV! (most times)
Our last and potentially sixth reason for not buying a plasma is that often the plasma set is not a high definition television.

It is true that many plasma models offer a native resolution which allows owners to watch true HDTV, however, the problem is the majority of units sold are EDTV sets marketed as being HDTV capable.

Many angry plasma owners and ex-owners have told us they felt deceived when they found out that their EDTV set wasn’t an HDTV television.

Until the manufacturers and sellers of these products clearly articulate this information and stop selling them as HDTV capable, we believe it is a significant disadvantage when buying one of these televisions.

I can understand that view of Travel Channel’s Most Haunted, I watch that show more for the entertainment value of seeing people getting scared in the dark. For some reason, that makes me chuckle. But I have a different view of the SciFi channel’s Ghost Hunter.

Although both of these shows are based around paranormal investigation, they take two very different approaches to it. I guess you could say that one takes a skeptical approach and they other, well the other takes an approach that is…fake.

Most Haunted a couple of years ago. I liked the idea of people videotaping themselves walking around creepy places at night and in the dark. Like I said there is something about seeing people get frightened out of their mind that makes me laugh. Hey, I’m not the only one. America’s Funniest Home Videos has tons of footage of people scaring other people and we all laugh at it.

It wasn’t until I started to watch Ghost Hunters that I realized just how ridiculously fake Most Haunted seems. If your not that familiar with Ghost Hunters, it is the taping of a company called T.A.P.S aka The Atlantic Paranormal Society as they research cases for client’s who feel that they have some sort of paranormal situation going on.

If you haven’t checked out either show, you should. Ghost Hunters is good for a few goosebumps and Most Haunted, well it’s good for a few laughs.

Ghost Hunters – The Complete First Season

Most Haunted: The Collection

I figured I would give some reasons as to why Ghost Hunters is a better and more believable show than Most Haunted.

The Approach To Paranormal Investigation

1. Ghost Hunters – More than just a “reality” TV show, Ghost Hunters is chronicling T.A.P.S which is a real paranormal investigative company which is based out of Rhode Island. They were taking on cases long before they got their TV show.
2. Most Haunted – lead by Yvette Fielding who is the wife of Karl Beattie (also on the show) who owns the production company Antix Productions that actually produces this show. Right there is reason enough for them to “make things happen” on the show.
3. Ghost Hunters – TAPS claims that they enter each case with the sole purpose of finding a rational explanation for what their client’s are experiencing
4. Most Haunted – seems to take on each case with complete certainty that the only explanation for what is going on is paranormal activity
5. Ghost Hunters – Every member of the TAPS team is an investigator carrying the necessary equipment to show proof of temperature drops, changes in barometer and stuff like that
6. Most Haunted – has one paranormal investigator, usually Dr. Ciaran O’Keeffe, and everyone else just says things like “I’m freezing”, “the air feels heavy”, “I feel sad”…real concrete stuff like that.

Paranormal Investigative Techniques

7. Ghost Hunters – they record everything. They set up cameras that are left to record from all different angles. They also use hand held cameras which are used when they are walking around the area.
8. Most Haunted – they utilize hand held cameras and also have a camera and sound crew following them everywhere. That many people is bound to cause disruptions that could be mistaken for “experiences”.
9. Ghost Hunters – they listen to what client’s claim their experiences in the area have been and they try to find explanations for them. They check out ventilation, wiring…anything that could be causing side effects that are similar to a paranormal experience.
10. Most Haunted – they in no way try to explain what people have experienced in the area as something other than paranormal. They go into an area with the intention of communicating with the paranormal or an “astral being” as they like to refer to them on the show.
11. Ghost Hunters – uses investigative equipment which would produce proof
12. Most Haunted – uses psychics and mediums as well as asking the spirit to communicate through seances and by asking them to make a series of taps on the wall or the floor

The Findings

13. Ghost Hunters – clearly states that in about 80% of their cases they find causes for the client’s experiences that have nothing to do with the paranormal
14. Most Haunted – never really state that there can be other explanations as to what people are experiencing and seem to think that those who would try to explain away the paranormal phenomena do so because they are skeptics
15. Ghost Hunters – examines all of the footage they have captured throughout the night’s investigation, weed out stuff that can be explained away and present the client with a true example of things that they cannot explain
16. Most Haunted – there is no way of telling what they are including as phenomena, they never explain their techniques for proving or disproving sounds and feelings
17. Ghost Hunters – on numerous occasions TAPS have captured actual movement of items in rooms, things beings seen through infrared cameras ,and EVP electronic voice phenomena that have been recorded. They actually produce proof.
18. Most Haunted – their crew sometimes cries, falls down, is possessed, feels cold, hears taps on the wall, has things thrown at them (which is never visible on camera) and sometimes feels sick. So they usually produce no proof what so ever.

The Scandals

19. Ghost Hunters – I have found no reported instances of any of the TAPS crew being discovered falsifying any of the phenomena that happens on the show.
20. Most Haunted – the shows own parapsychologist Dr. Ciaran O’Keeffe spoke out in a British tabloid called The Mirror about what he called “showmanship and dramatics” being used to deceive viewers.
21. Most Haunted – The Mirror also reported, in an article called Spooky Truth: TV’s Most Haunted Con Exposed, to have obtained unedited footage from Most Haunted which showed Yvette Fielding and her husband Karl Beattie faking paranormal occurrences such as ghostly bumps and knocks
22. Most Haunted – one of the shows regular mediums, Derek Acorah (who’s official site I was unable to get up and running at the time of writing this article…hmmm) has been openly accused by cast members of the show of faking his possessions. Acorah has since been fired from Most Haunted because he was found to be a fake.

I figured I would throw in the above clip of Derek Acorah being possessed by someone claiming that “Mary loves Dick”. Come on…seriously? Does she. Any way whether you buy into either of these shows being at all truthful you have to admit that they are kind of entertaining. At least I think so.

Usually by the end of an It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia episode you will have had a wide range of emotions including embarrassment, laughter, disgust and most importantly happiness. After all, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

It all started with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s pilot episode. This was something legends are made of. The pilot was shot on a digital camcorder and is rumored to have been made for amounts ranging from $85.00 – $400.00. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became popular via the internet. It was that internet popularity that led to FX paying $400,00.00 to the shows creators Charlie Day, Glen Howerton and Rob McElhenney to shoot a first season.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s first season consisted of 7 episodes. Not only were the episodes themselves killer, but the name of each episode was the icing on the cake. You had: The Gang Gets Racist, Charlie Wants an Abortion, Underage Drinking: A National Concern, Charlie Has Cancer, Gun Fever, The Gang Finds a Dead Guy and the feel good season finale: Charlie Got Molested.

“With names like that what could It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia possibly be about?” you ask yourself. To try and sum it up: there are four friends that run Paddy’s Pub. Dennis, Mack, Dee and Charlie. All are self absorbed and demented. Basically they deal with controversial topics in such a way that leaves you cringing and saying “No. They didn’t just do that”. The names of the episodes really sum it up. I mean Charlie Got Molested…what could that be about other than molestation. Done in a very comical way of course.

I myself cannot get enough of this show. I have been dying to see some re-runs before the new season premiers. To tide myself over I decided to download some episodes. I also checked out FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia page but I was a little let down with that.

I guess I will just have to wait a few more months for the real deal.
