Avoid the Comfort Food Traps During the Holidays

What is comfort food anyways?

Last year about this time I was having marriage problems and had lots of time alone, thinking and being depressed. I didn’t notice it but I began to eat just to feel better for a little while. That’s what comfort food is. Eating to get over psychological or physical stress.

This year I want to do something about it. My marriage is better and my son is growing into a little man. Plenty to be happy about, right?

Well there was also the problem of find a stable job this past year too. I’ve gone about a year without employment and many things in my life suffered. I definitely need help for finding a new job and something I could stay at. Especially looking for a job in the Boston area. Another good reason to eat and make me feel better even if it’s just for a little while. Nothing like eating pizza and french fries then laying down on the couch and watching a movie or 2.

What I needed to learn was that I was eating for comfort and I needed to get out of it. Damn fast food drive thru and pizza delivery is what got me. It was too convenient rather than cooking a real meal or preparing something if I was going to be on the go. And of course most of these foods were high in complex carbs and sugars and sweeteners that the body tends to produce an opiate-like process in the brain that satisfies us.

There is something we can do to Fight the Urge for Comfort Foods.

One of the best ways to fight the temptation of comfort foods is to wait as much as you can before eating. If you have yourself 20 minutes or listening to music or playing a game or even calling a friend on the phone then you are more likely not to pig out on something that will really make you fat.

Many people who feel the temptation to indulge in comfort foods due to stress find that redirecting their attention helps a lot. One way to do this is to place the amount of money that your comfort food would cost into a jar and saving it for something special. You will be surprised not only at the amount of money you will save, but at how well you will be able to avoid comfort food and feel better about yourself. And having a few hundred dollars left over each month is nice too.

Finally, whenever all else fails, remove yourself from temptation by doing away with the junk food in your home and office. Replace them with foods that are healthy for you; so that even if you can’t resist the urge to snack while stressed at least you will be filling your body with something good for you.
