Why Is Daylight Savings Time Changing?

Daylight savingsIn 2005 an Energy Policy Act was put in place which calls for daylight savings time to start 3 weeks earlier. The springing forward of our clocks will now take place on the first Sunday in March at 2pm. This year it is on March 11th. It also ends a little later now with the moving back of the clocks being on the first Sunday in November at 2am. This year it falls on November 4.

The reason for this is simple. We need more daylight hours. Perfect, right? Problems solved? We’ll just change the clocks. Not so fast. Remember Y2K? Well we have people freaking out about this earlier time change affecting software.

But it is called the Energy Policy Act of 2005. What has everyone been doing to prepare for this? The answer: not a whole hell of a lot. What we are going to see happen is some software is going to be able to be updated using a patch to change to the correct time while other software will not. People are scrambling to come up with solutions for their software.

So we will all just download some patches and everyone will be all set. Well that is if the company who’s software or device you use is still supporting that application or device. Also we do need to take into consideration all of those slackers out there that will just be doing math in their head for 3 weeks. Math in their head? Who does that?

Basically, if everyone is not on the same page with this there is going to be some confusion and some headaches. But just like that pesky old turn of the century we got through, this too shall pass. Besides, it’s only 3 weeks now and some time in November. So what if you show up an hour late everywhere you go. Chances are you will not be the only one.

This is going to be fun. Just wait and see.
