I have had an Inspirion 6400 model since 2007. Date today is April 12 2011. My front right speaker, the one above the battery got hot
and started crackling. I thought it was the battery but the battery was cold. Last night I took out the internal speakers, disconnected them from the mother board. I turned the laptop back on and let it sit for about an hour at first just using the battery and then plugged in to Ac adapater and the laptop stayed cold. I'm going to call dell and if they say it isn't their concern I'm not going to buy any more dells.

My Inspiron actually caught fire last night after I shut it down and went to bed. Luckily, the noise got my attention and I was able to disconnect the cables and throw it out on the patio before the whole house caught fire.

I just started researching this because yesterday my dell inspiron caught on fire in my lap. It wasn't as dramatic as the above but smoke started coming from the speakers and then a small spark. It automatically cut off but when you turn it on it does the same thing. I never heard anything about a recall about my battery
