Whether your state has made fireworks illegal or not, chances are you will be at a party this summer where fireworks are being set off. Take a second to envision the person who will be igniting the firecrackers and what their level of intoxication will be…pretty scary huh? You need to practice firework safety this summer or you could die. fireworks safety

Everyone loves to see fireworks during the summer. Fireworks are considered as American as Apple pie. What we also need to consider is that fireworks are as dangerous as, oh I don’t know, explosive devices. Each year there are approximately 9,300 people treated in emergency rooms for firework related injuries. Out of those 9,300 people, about 4 will die.

What is even more alarming than the number of people injured from fireworks each year is that 45% of those people are age 14 and under. Where are these parents? Why do these children have access to explosive devices? Children between the ages of 5 and 9 have the highest rate of firework related injuries. Kids that age shouldn’t even have access to the lighters or matches it would take to ignite the firework let alone the explosive device itself.

So you still want to light off fireworks this summer huh? Ok, well there are firework safety measures you can take to avoid injuries.

Firework Safety Tips

  • Only buy from a reputable fireworks dealer
  • Always READ and follow directions
  • Alcohol and fireworks DO NOT mix
  • Always have a source of water near by
  • Never point on throw fireworks at another person
  • Never give any firework item to a small child
  • Never try to relight a malfunctioning firework

These firework safety tips are easily followed and will decrease your chances of firework related death or injury. So do what we tell you and please be careful. Don’t drink a twelve pack and decide you want to shoot off a bottle rocket from your ear.

One more thing I think I should mention. Fireworks are lit off during peak mosquito hours. Taking into consideration that some mosquitoes are now carrying the EEE virus, this also is a threat to your life. You need to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself from EEE infected mosquitoes or you could die.
