Hounddog Movie Debuts at Sundance Under Controversy

An Independent film, starring 12 year old Dakota Fanning, titled Hounddog is causing major controversy. People all over are sounding off over the sexual situations that Fanning’s character, 9-year-old Lewellen, is involved in throughout this film. The main problem that people are having with Hounddog is a graphically suggested rape involving Fanning’s character.

The question being raised is whether it is creepier watching the fictional, suggested rape of a 9 year old girl or the fact that this 12 year old girl’s parents allowed her to partake in this role due to the subject matter. The public does not know, and probably will never know, what went into her parents deciding to allow her to play this role. This positively was not an easy decision.

It appears, from comments and interviews of former co-stars and associates of Dakota Fanning, that this is not your typical 12 year old girl. Dakota is forever being described as unusually mature for her age and she obviously takes her profession very seriously. Perhaps this, plus her true understanding that she was playing a role and was not actually being exploited was what led to her accepting this part.

Should a 12 year old be forced to think about rape for her career?

That’s a valid question. Normally 12 year olds don’t have careers and aren’t faced with most of the situations that an actor or actress is. Sadly in our country there are thousands of normal everyday 12 year olds that are faced with rape and some of the other situations that play out in the movie. It is my personal opinion that this is what people should be outraged over.

When this movie was being filmed in Wilmington, N.C. there was actually talk of a possible investigation being launched to look into sexual exploitation charges. This was before anyone from the public had actually viewed the film. The investigation never took place but it really goes to show what type of society we live in.

It seems to be that it is the Smiths from Suburbia who haven’t a clue about this type of subject matter are the ones getting their undies in a bunch over this. Get the point of the movie people. This is a real life situation for someone out there. Be outraged about that!
