I have since found a solution to roll back WMP12 on Windows 7 to
WMP11. I watched a You Tube video and there is a Windows Media player 11 installer for Windows 7,that will install WMP11 on Windows 7. And it worked for me. And I now have WMP11 running on all of my Windows 7 computers instead of WMP12.

But I have been unable to install WMP9 on Windows 7,which is what I prefer. As even when I tried to transfer the WMP9 file from my Windows XP computer to Windows 7-I got an error message-"this program is blocked due to compatibility issues."

But I did see another You Tube video where someone else did get WMP9 running on Windows 7. Using a software called Resource Hacker but I could not figure out how he did it. As it the video was not in English and it appeared that the way to do this is complicated.

As it is WMP11 only runs on windows 7 because the WMP 11 for Windows 7 is adapted to run on Windows 7-See this website here, where I found out how to install WMP11 on Windows 7-http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/5697-how-downgrade-windows-media-player-12-wmp-11-windows-7-a.html

So maybe one day someone will invent a WMP9 for Windows 7. But for now the lowest version of WMP you can run on Windows 7 is WMP11. Andrea Borman.

Windows Media Player 9 is the default WMP bundled with Windows XP.So if you install WMP 10 or WMP 11 and then change your mind, you can roll back to WMP 9. By just uninstalling WMP 10 or 11 in control panel, uninstall a program. If you installed WMP 10 before WMP 11. After you uninstall WMP 11 you will get WMP 10 back but you can just uninstall that to get back to WMP 9.

But Windows Vista is bundled with WMP 11 and Windows 7 with WMP 12. So you cannot roll back to a previous version of WMP in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. So in Windows Vista you are stuck with WMP 11 and in Windows 7 you are stuck with WMP 12.

And in Windows XP you cannot roll back any further from WMP 9.That is in Windows XP you cannot uninstall WMP 9 and roll back to WMP 8 or WMP 7. WMP 9 is part of Windows XP,just as WMP 11 and 12 are part of Windows Vista and Windows 7. Andrea Borman.

Thank God for you, Rafael! I did what you said & we now have windows media player 9 back!! I love you. I HATE Microsoft. I HATE Windows Vista & Windows 7. I don't think you can buy Windows XP anymore. We like Windows XP.

May god continue to bless you!!

@Glenn: If DRM Migrate EXE needs to close, that probably indicates that your DRM cache is corrupt. Look up "DRM reset" or check out the fix for "indiv" aka individualization that's on my site and probably elsewhere. If you're still boned, post up again - but check out my site (zachd dot com slash pss slash pss.html) since it's got most of what you'd ever want to know about troubleshooting here. =\

Sorry to dig up this old article, but it worked wonders for me.
Only, why the last steps? To prevent WMP from updating itself?
Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question. Everything's fine (again) without completing M-O.

I am trying to get WMP to work on a 9 year old HP Pavilion. I reinstalled the OS, ( XP Home ) and did all the HP updates so I could get all service packs and updates done. Windows Media Player 9 worked. Today, I try to upgrade to WMP 11 and it will not complete. Version 9 will no longer work. I uninstall Version 11 from Add/Remove programs and rollback to version 9 but 9 will not work. I search and look for all updates/fixes and do not know what to do now. I did try upgrading to WMP 10 but it always as version 9 says that it is not installed right and asks me if I want to go to Microsoft to get the latest version? IN all of this, I get a message that says, DRM Migrate EXE needs to close. I did go to see if that folder existed after reading about deleting it and it is not there. Can you help me get ANY version of WMP to work?

ken...after reading your article,i decided it was worth a try to roll back ver 10 that had completely hancuffed my Memorex MMP 8640.
i performed steps 2 thru 6 and all seemed to be ok , Except !
When i opened My Computer, my media player no longer was recognized, like wise in Windows Explorer . I failed to perform step 1 during the roll back, forgetting to remove my media players usb connection. The media player works fine, nothing lost, but cant be seen on my PC, nor on my laptop which is using ver 9. WHAT Happened ? any ideas would be welcome. thanx

WMP10 cannot be installed safely/sanely over the top of WMP11. How you handle this depends upon the exact scenario. If you're trying to install it on Vista, that won't work. If you're trying to install it on XP, you need to remove the Windows Media 11 Format Runtime first.

This is due to the limitations of the WMP*10* installer, which was written years(?) before WMP11 and thus does not know about WMP11 and cannot safely handle installing over the top of it. :)
