The Fighter – The Movie of Irish Micky Ward
Paramount Pictures has reportedly fast tracked The Fighter which is a biopic of fighter Irish Micky Ward. Mark Walhberg and Matt Damon will be co-starring in this movie based on the life of Micky Ward and his half brother and trainer Dicky Eklund.
Any real fan of boxing will remember the Ward vs Gatti fights. These two fighters brought the real thrill of boxing back in these epic battles. Some of the best brawling in a boxing match that I’ve ever watched live or on tv. Being from the Lowell area myself I can tell you that Micky Ward was really a hero of the people. He was a blue collar worker from the streets that made good.
Dicky Eklund, Wards half brother and trainer, was once in the HBO Documentary film titled “High on Crack Street” which was a movie documenting the once rampant crack problem on the streets of Lowell Massachusetts. He was in the documentary for obvious reasons. His comeback from a life of drugs is a triumph in itself. When you team that with the boxing career of Micky Ward, you can see it is truly the stuff movies are made of.

Micky Ward ran the Boston Marathon in April 2004 as a Fund-Raiser for his favorite charity, the Lowell based Kids In Disability Sports Inc.
“When I get tired (during a training run), I think of the kids who can’t run” he said.” That’s what keeps me going. And seeing the smile on the kids faces, that’s the main thing.” K.I.D.S. and its president and founder, Bruce Lucier, are trying to raise enough money to operate a building geared toward disabled athletes. The building would be the first of its kind in the country.

I used to see Micky at Captain Jons in Lowell when I lived on Dane street. He was always coming in after our Lowell Nor Easters Football Games. What a great guy always livend up the place ya know! They better put that Bar in the movie or it won;t be based on truth.. Hallsy

I can’t wait to see the film. I’ve heard a lot about Mickey’s greatness in pool halls around Lowell and across Southern New Hampshire. Hopefully, this movie will set the stage for more films about great, but relatively unknown (to the general public) boxers from the Boston area, like Jack Sharkey, Sam Langford, George Dixon, Joe Wolcott, and William Mellody. There’s a lot of great boxing history out there, just waiting to be filmed!

I am an old friend of Mickey’s and he is a great guy, as for the gentlemen that writes negative stuff about Mickey is an ass, Mickey does more for kid’s and lowell then anyone I know. Hey Nick.. Mickey Ward is a BOXER. Probably the most furious and unrelenting boxer I have ever watched. He is fierce and has heart that some of these over paid clowns need to have. As far as his nephews, why don’t you watch the H.B.O. Documentary to get an idea of what life is really like for those of us that are less fortunate for poor Irish communities “Ya BUM”. That’s life my friend, some of us have to do things that we don’t like to do to survive. I can’t wait to see the movie!

Lowell was always a “hard luck city” but As a long time resident I will tell you it has more heart than any other place on earth. As someone who lived on Broadway street in the Acre and knew a lot of these guys and the West End Gym, I just want to say it’s great to glorify fighting and Mickey for what he had to do, but the truth is you don’t have the options in life and you do what you have to do. That’s the real story. Here’s a guy who battled anyway he could and came out on top despite all the odds and is a human being who only wants to do something nice for people. A lot of people in lowell didn’t make it and a lot of things went on that shouldn’t have(like when the cops smashed him up outside the Cosmo that night). Hope they tell the real story.

Looking forward to seeing the movie Mick! Having been one of your sparring partners in 1978 at Leo Lydon’s South End Gym, across the street from Towers News, I have personally felt a few of your now infamous left hooks (thank God you were just learning how to throw ‘em back then). I also remember what Leo and our other trainers taught us about the values of the sport of boxing; Boxing is an art that takes time, discipline and repetition to master, be humble in your wins, always be a gentleman outside of the ring, and when the fight is over and it wasn’t your night, give your opponent the respect they deserve.
I have seen you demonstrate all of these values over the course of your career! That, to me, is the sign of a true world champion boxer! God Bless, “Irish” Micky Ward!

Plain and simple, the most amazing fighter I have seen in a long time. His fights are lost memories of boxers like Graziano, Basilio, and LaMotta. It has been a long time since a man with this much heart has been in the ring. The respect he gives his opponents and the sport are a tribute to his integrity. The Ward / Gatti trilogy are three of the best fights I have ever seen. Possibly the most underated and underpaid fighter of all time!

Having been born in Lowell where I lived the first 28 years of my life, I can attest to the greatness of the city often overlooked. It’s the people and spirit that never fails. Like Micky, Lowell has been punched and dizzied many times but has always fought back to prove itself worthy of praise. I really hope the city is used in filming this story. It has a rough beauty that cannot be captured in Canada or anywhere else on this planet. By the way, Mickey O’Keefe should be a major part of this story since it was he, more than anyone, who provided Micky support and proper leadership when he needed it.

I boxed for the Immaculate Conception CYO in 1948 and was boxing in 1949 the first year of the Silver mittens. I seen most of Mickey’ Ward’s fights, and I am really looking forward to the movie. When are they going to start shooting the movie? The first Ward and Gatti fight was the best fight I have ever see. I hope you are enjoying your retirement Mickey. I think you are one of the best fighters that came out of Lowell and Lowell has produced a lot of great fighters.

Look Nic, you may think you are the sh*$, how ever I grew up idolizing Mickey Ward and have made a life time of following Mickey and even using some of his training techniques to train my wife who won three world championships this last year (2007) and still use some of them to train my own fighters who have won local and state (NC) championship titles and I am at this time training my neices who are looking at soccer scholarships at a local state college. I did alot of sparring with Micky, and have never been to the body as hard as Micky hit me. HE is also one of the best guy’s you could ever meet, big heart in and out of the ring, he deserves all the best. Can’t wait to watch the movie, and the book was really good to.

Hey MICK,I had a fighter on one of the cards in AC,My grandson took some acting lessons,his dream is to play arturo gotti,or anyone else,in your movie,after hearing,the good things,when we met during the days of that bout in AC,with stepbrother Dick,even after the b out that both of us won.He would love to meet you guys.I Took him to gyms in philly & nj. He did pretty good he’s a southpaw,not a fighter,respects the game,and knows,the heart you have to do what you did.

There was an open casting call in Lowell for the film today. They were asking for people who would be free to work this summer in July and August.
My buddy got interviewed for a role as a fighter. One of about 30 people to get an on camera interview. I only posted pictures, not stories from the day, I did not bring any release forms with me.

I posted most of the good pictures. Having pictures of just crowds of people was a bit dull. My friends, the three guys in the picture, Tom Sean and Bill all got filmed.
Heck Sean is Sean. I’m pretty sure if he hears anything then I will. We were only there (at least Tom and I) because he really pushed Tom to go. Tom was this close to not even leaving Boston, so I got in my car, drove down from Revere and drove him to Lowell.
The people at Boston Casting said the movie would be filming this summer. I almost thought I saw Micky but if it was him, he was trying to be low key. (can’t miss the arm tat and that head now can you)
I’ll post anything else I hear on my blog, and if they let me stories from the shot when it happens. Check in with me from time to time, or give me a nudge if to long goes by without my saying anything. You do have my permission to post a link on your blog and send people my way.
If I get the okay from my friends to tell some of what went on yesterday, I’ll post it. My only story is – I took lots of pictures.

I grew up with mickey dicky and jerry ward will enjoy to see film and they need to shootthe towers corner after all the lowell academy where they had a pro ring above the old bar I used to work at.now he ends up at the galick club and others in town still.as a bouncer in moat of the bars in town it’s like strooling down a torid meory

I attended the casting call yesterday. I was soooo excited when I got into the second line for the camera interview. It was so exciting. I really hope I get called. They wrote on my paper that I could play a relative. The guy in front of me had boxer or crackhead! Thye guy in front of him had young Micky Ward.

I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time! Mick, you deserve this film , which explains your story, and gives us hope, in not only boxing, but in life. I’ve been boxing since I’ve been sixteen, now I’m 26, but have had some bad luck with trainers. I was supposed to have gone pro at 22 years old, but like I said, things with my trainer didn’t go to well. I don’t wanna mention any names, because I don’t wanna talk bad about anyone. Well, I moved to greece for a year, and just moved back about a year ago, and have been strugglin’ ever since. See I’m from Lynn , born and raised, but I have to stay with my cousins in West Peabody out in the boonies. There’s no transportation, it’s horrible. I got in good with Alex and Andy Riveira, down in Lynn, and my main goal is to work, get an apt. and start to train, and fight as quick, and as much as I can. This is the only thing I am good at, believe me! Even the riveira bros. wanted me to keep going, but I had this little honda civic when I first got here from greece, and i ended up crashing it. So now, it’s about a 15 mile hike from here. But I’m gonna start workin’ in Lynn startin’ wednesday, slowly save up, and jump back in the game! I can’t live without it! But anyways, sorry to ramble, but Mick, I don’t know if you read these, you have been a positive influence in my life, and it’s just incredible, to fight the way you do. I think i missed the deadline for the extras in the upcoming film about you. Is there anything i can do? Because that’s my second passion is acting! I know, I know, I’ve got damn, near impossible dreams! But if i can’t dream, I’d rather be dead, ya know? Anyways, thank you for taking the time out to read this letter. You are what boxing is about! You and your trilogy with Arturo! I’ve met you, and Dickie Ecklund before, when we came down to the West End Gym before, but you wouldn’t remember me , man! ‘High on Crack Street,featured a good friend of mine Gary Geffrieter.He flew out to my wedding(1980) along with a few of my other Highland Park friends from Lowell. My Uncle Don Conley,trained Dicky as an amateur,I have a POSTER of Sugar Ray Lenard vs Lowell’s tough Dicky Ekland 1978. Framed and in great condition.I SO WANT A PART IN THIS MOVIE..I left Lowell in 1975 to pursue a movie career as a Stuntman(SAG). Bob Tesier stared in THE DEEP-he played ‘The bald tough guy’ came from Lowell he was a friend of mine in the beginning of my career. Can anyone help me get an audtion?

I’m not interested in playing a “drug addict” even though I know i can hands down. I was looking for more of a role as a boxer. I actually know I could play the role better than the selected actors, but that’s not my call. I have watched this family since “High on Crack Street” and followed both their careers (Dicky & Mickey). Their family cronicles mine, that’s why I was so intrigued with this movie.
I respect Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Mark Wahlberg etc… They are all well diverse and extremely talented and proven, but I feel that the true acting so be portrayed by someone who is capable of giving a performance of a lifetime, especially with this story.
I think the director should take a chance and roll the dice. Like I stated before, I would be honored to be a participate in this movie, but more of a boxer, or another significant role, no matter how small the part. I just would like to have some meaning.

I am excited about this film and hope I get a part on it. I love boxing and Mickey’s fight with Gatti was super incredible…those are the boxing fights that I love to watch. Boston Casting is actually looking for 1980’s car with rust and they are paying people to rent them per day and so forth go online and visit http://www.bostoncasting.com to find out more information…they already casted the Extras and they are still looking for speaking roles, which are under five…I hope to get at least an under five part…they mentioned that they want to give the LOWELL and sorrounding areas a preference…so hope that really is TRUE!

My son went to the casting in Lowell and had a callback yesterday where he and two others had to shadow-box in front of the camera. He said there were over 100 people in there of all different types. No word on if he will hear back or not, but I hope he gets a role as well.

Did they cast the part of Mickey’s daughter? My daughter auditioned last month, but didn’t hear back. Still, I have not seen anywhere that the part has been filled.

They already did this movie years ago. It’s called High on crack street. I also find it funny, the actors who sign on to this piece of garbage than at the last minute drop out. They probally realized it’s going to flop like ron jermeys hard on.

Hey there all you mickey fans they just started filming about 2 weeks ago. i live in Lowell,ma on summer st. one street over from rogers St. where they have all the Rv’s for the actors and are keeping all of the filming trucks. Right now they are filming at the tsonjas area. for all the fight scenes. Next they are going to do some bar scenes where mickey hangs out but it closed about a year ago the Highland Tap i think thats the one. I think they said the fighter will be out 2011 can’t wait.

They’re filming near my house this week. On Beacon street on top of Christian Hill. Lots of cars and trucks….I think they’re filming in a house.

Update 8/07/09 As i type this they are filming at Gus and Pauls bar. But they changed the name of the bar to the foxtail. Thats the bar that use to be on merrimack street in downtown lowell. Gus and Pauls is on 165 chelmsford St. Across the street from Ma/com company. Right now there is a small crowd forming across the street trying to get some snapshots of the actors in the movie. Lot of excectment here in lowell,ma. I live on summer st. right in the heart of the action. Will go down and check it out.

I work at Bucks Bar & Grill (formerly Gus and Pauls) We are so excited to have been part of this movie!
We closed the bar for 2 days (the 6th and 7th) while they transformed and used this location as the Foxtail Lounge.
They were nice enough to let us stay in the bar and watch during all the filming, hang out and meet all the actors, and even used some of us as extras.
I can’t wait until the movie comes out!!

I was at Buck’s when they shot scenes there both days. I am a featured extra in the movie doing shots with Amy Adams at the bar. She was great to work with and Mark and Christian were both really cool too. I have to say that everyone there from all the other extras to the crew to David O. Russell who picked me and Boo-Boo to do ’shots’ with Amy were extremely polite and friendly and great people. I feel honored to have played a small part in this movie especially since my roots are in the Highlands (Bellevue Street) and I heard many stories about all these bars along Chelmsford Street – especially Marty’s for Party’s!
Sorry, no pics from me – easiest way to get fired on set! I can’t wait to see the movie when it’s completed. Good for you Micky and Dicky!

Hey Rick,
Unfortunately, they are wrapping up production next week. They shot a “date” scene in Lexington Center over night at the Lexington Flick. Next week they shoot at a local prison and they are all set for that – they did background checks on everyone so they could get access to the prison.
I had seen Boo-Boo around back in the day when I worked at Belvidere Wine – early 90’s. Hadn’t seen him since then and he seems like he’s doing okay. There was a minor incident with him during a scene where he poked Amy in the eye by accident. She was fine and it was really no big deal, although some other stuff on the internet makes it sound like he knocked her out, hehe!
Anyway, it was a great experience and I can’t wait to see how this movie does when it comes out.

I grew up in the Highlands and now living off of Beacon St. I can’t help but wonder if Lowell is making the cast and crew a bit uncomfortable. I’m sure filming on Beacon wasn’t half bad, it’s a quiet neighborhood but I imagine most of the filming would be in the highlands which can be uncomfortable for me even and I grew up there so that place feels more like home to me than anywhere else.
I wonder if they’ll have the premiere here too. Lowell may not be very glamorous, so I’m thinking ‘no’, but it certainly has all the facilities a city could ask for.

I currently work in downtown Lowell At & T and also grew up in the area. I have always been a fan of Micky for many many years. I’m glad to hear that they are finally coming out w/ a movie. They have been filming a lot of the movie in this area one of them being on Worthen St.
