Is A Morbid Curiosity About True Crimes Normal?
When it comes to true crime I consider myself as having a morbid curiosity for it. I enjoy reading books and watching TV shows that deal with the topic of murder and the mystery associated with murder. I love to read books that deal with the psychological make up of serial killers. I find it interesting to know what goes on in the brain of a murderer. What does that say about me?
Let’s breakdown what a morbid curiosity is:
Morbid – gruesome or grisly
Curiosity – the desire to learn or know about something
Put em together and what have you got? A desire to learn about something gruesome or grisly. But why? Why don’t I like to read love stories or feel good books? One answer that I came up with is that I myself can feel love, I can feel happy. What I can’t feel is what it is like to have to go out and murder someone. Why do I want to feel that? I have to go back to my original answer of morbid curiosity.
For whatever reason, some of us are interested to know what goes through the mind of a serial killer. We want to know what it is about them that makes them do this. We want to know what their childhood was like and if their friends and family really didn’t know there was anything odd about them.
I’m not alone in my fascination of the macabre. There are thousands of websites dedicated to this very topic. One such website is Crime Library which focuses on the criminal minds and their methods. The Criminal Library has all sorts of categories including: Most Notorious Serial Killer, Truly Weird and Shocking Serial Killers, etc, etc.
Where I Draw The Line
I don’t think that my mother in-law would understand the humor in receiving a John Wayne Gacy Greeting Card for her birthday. I don’t know, that’s just me.
I also don’t think that my husband would think it was very sexy if I came to bed wearing a serial killer thong inspired by the BTK killer. Call me crazy but that just doesn’t scream “let’s get it on”. But then again I’m not a guy, I could be wrong.
I guess my morbid curiosity is satisfied with true crime books and TV shows. Sure, I could tell you how to capture and kill someone and then hide the body without getting caught. So what, it’s not like I’m going to do it just because I know how. Plus, the fact that my husband knows that I possess this knowledge keeps him in line.
I say morbid curiosity is normal. If it wasn’t, there wouldn’t be bumper to bumper traffic jams on the opposite side of the highway where an auto accident occurred. People wouldn’t slow down when passing by an ambulance to try and catch a glimpse of whatever it is that caused the ambulance to be there. We are all sick and twisted…it’s time to face it.

I totally agree and have the same questions. As a matter of fact, the first question I had about the rampage at Virginia Tech was, Is the suspect still alive? As horrible as the situation was and he probably is better off dead, I would love to know what was going through his mind. Why he doesn’t have the mental capability to hold back in times of anger. Nice blog, I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with a morbid curiosity.

please exsuse my spelling. this morning i was looking at unsolved crimes in owensboro ky and other countys close by. i love reading true crime and think it is normal for people to think about this kind of stuff. when i was doing a shurch for john gacy and found this site. the book i read about him was long ago but some things stuck in my mind. was it a blue caddy he use to drive? i forget when he was caught but when i was about 16 a blue caddy tryed to pick up me and a young friend and i seen this car before and tryed to stop me by trying to offer me money for sex acts. it looked alot like him. the reason i was looking around was i wonder if his co did any work around owensboro ky? that was in 1976.
