Scott Seegert’s Book It’s A Guy Thing Made This Girl Laugh
I recently read It’s A Guy Thing written by Scott Seegert. The subtitle kind of explains what the book is about “Awesome Real Innovations From The Underdeveloped Male Mind”. Being a girl (ok, I’m turning 30 on Tuesday, call me a woman) I was kind of doubtful that this book would be enjoyable to me. It is supposed to be humorous….but was it?
The answer is definitely YES. Right away while reading the introduction I realized that Scot Seegert has my type of sense of humor. What type is that? Funny. The author kept referring to “we” when explaining their definition of what a “guy” is and why guys are different. Then he goes onto explain that “we ourselves are so different that we insist on referring to ourselves as ‘we’, even though there is only one of us”.
It’s A Guy Thing was definitely written by a “guy”. It doesn’t have to be a straight through read. It is intended more to be kept in the home office, a.k.a. the bathroom, and read in “as few as seven or eight sittings”. With titles like “New Ways for Guys to Shoot Each Other” you know right off the bat that you are in store for some chuckles.
I guess the thing I liked most about this book is that all of the invention examples given in It’s A Guy Thing were taken directly from the official patent paperwork filed with the Unites States Patent and Trademark Office. The details of the invention construction, the year it was patented and the first name of the inventor are all true. You will question that a few times throughout this book…but sadly, it’s true.
It’s A Guy Thing also provided some direct quotes from the inventors that were submitted with the patent paperwork. One example is Joe’s Dead Body Cube where the inventor described that the cube is “a means whereby a corpse can be hermetically incased within a block of transparent glass, whereby being effectually excluded from the air the corpse will be maintained for an indefinite period in a perfect and lifelike condition”. You know, so you can keep Grandpa in the corner of the living room until you get a new couch that doesn’t match his suit. Then it’s off to the attic for him.
Men will definitely enjoy reading It’s A Guy Thing. They will no doubt find at least one or two inventions that they would consider “awesome” and wonder why it never caught on such as Norm’s Waste Disposal Pants or Ricardo’s Toilet Lounger. I just assumed anything that would make going to the bathroom even easier for a guy would be something they would enjoy.
Woman will love It’s A Guy Thing simply because they get to feel a little superior to men (until the last chapter where they see that woman have stupid ideas also). Finally someone has proved in black and white that guys are bafoons. I think John’s Head-Butt Game, which is part of the chapter “Things For Guys With Kids”, really drives this point home.
Scott Seegert, in my opinion, has struck gold with It’s A Guy Thing. I suggest you lay out the $13.95, get the book, put it in the bathroom, and get to reading. You’ll be glad you did. You might also want to check out Scott Seegert’s website for a few chuckles.
