Large Undersea Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warnings for Sumatra

A large earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck Monday off the Indonesian island of Sumatra — the same region where a 9.0 undersea earthquake triggered tsunamis that killed approximately 280,000 people in late December.

While it’s unclear whether this latest seismic movement could cause a tsunami, the U.S. Geological Survey has advised officials in the area to move people inland. Thai officials were among the first to issue tsunami warnings.

A spokesperson for the USGS told CNN that the possibility of tsunamis following Monday’s earthquake existed. “Certainly, evacuations should be occurring. I hope they are,” Don Blakeman of the USGS said.

However, Blakeman did say that “even if we do see tsunami activity, it won’t be as widespread.”

No injuries or damage have been reported as of press time.
