Massachusetts LOTTERY POSTS BEST YEAR EVER IN 33-YEAR HISTORY

State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill and Lottery Executive Director Joseph C. Sullivan today announced that the Massachusetts Lottery returned an estimated $935 million in local aid to the Commonwealth for Fiscal Year 2005 – the largest amount of local aid revenue in the 33-year history of the Lottery.

Sales for FY05 soared to $4.48 billion, exceeding the previous record of $4.38 billion, set in FY04, by more than 2.3 percent. This marks the second consecutive year that the Lottery has posted record-breaking figures in sales and profit returned to the Commonwealth.

“The Massachusetts Lottery has a long and proud history of offering players exciting and entertaining games, which has helped us become one of the most successful lotteries in the nation,” said Treasurer Cahill, who serves as Chairman of the Lottery. “Thanks to prudent management, strategic marketing and strong sales, we are thrilled to have set another record year in FY05. The more successful the Lottery, the more revenue generated for the Commonwealth’s 351 cities and towns.”

At $935 million, the profit to the state increased by approximately $23 million, up from $912 million in FY04. The amount of local aid distributed directly to municipalities in FY05 was capped by the Legislature at $661 million, but cities and towns benefited from a one-time additional allocation of $75 million last fall.

“We had another winning year for our players and municipalities at the Massachusetts Lottery,” said Lottery Executive Director Sullivan. “The results are a reflection of our entire organization and network of retail agents across the state. Our focus will remain on offering fun and entertaining games to our players in order to reach new levels of revenue growth, which allows us to fulfill our mission to the state’s municipalities.”

Strong instant ticket sales helped bolster the Lottery’s revenues, accounting for $3.13 billion or 70 percent of the Lottery’s total sales in FY05. The Lottery’s $10 instant games – Lifetime Spectacular, $725,000,000 Blockbuster, and $10,000,000 Hold’Em Poker – played a pivotal role in robust overall sales.

The excitement around large jackpots offered in the multi-state game, Mega Millions helped increase sales from $95 million in FY04 to $97 million in FY05 – representing a year-over-year increase of 1.1 percent.

The Lottery also benefited from the success of its newest jackpot game – CASH WinFall. The game, introduced in September 2004, contributed $41.8 million in sales for FY05 after being on the market for less than ten months.

The Lottery’s other online games posted strong sales in FY05. Keno turned in $742 million in sales, while the Numbers game saw sales of $352 million, and Mass Cash and Megabucks followed with $43.8 million and $44.5 million, respectively.
