What Are The Symptoms of Swine Flu

What is swine influenza?
Swine Influenza (Swine flu) is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses that leads to outbreaks in pigs and occasionally infects humans.

How does it spread?

The virus can be contracted in the same way as seasonal flu. It can be picked up directly from an infected person, or by touching an infected object. The virus can also become airborne if the infected person coughs or sneezes without covering their nose and mouth.

Swine Flu Symptoms

Swine flu victims exhibit similar symptoms to patients infected with regular seasonal flu: coughing, sneezing, headaches, body aches, fatigue, fever, chills, and sometimes vomiting. Severe cases that lead to death are normally seen in the very young and very old people whose immune systems are too weak to fight off the virus. Adults with severe illnesses may also have difficulty breathing, dizziness, severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Is there a vaccine against the swine flu?

Currently there are no vaccines available to protect against the swine flu, however, the CDCs (Center for Disease Control) around the world are working to produce one.

How can I protect myself?

A good way to prevent catching the virus is to avoid contact with people who are ill, trying not to touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus and staying in good general health. It is also important to limit the spread of germs by washing your hands, covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and discarding the tissue. It is also advised to avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth.

I think I’ve got swine flu. What should I do?

Contact a health care provider if you are worried about your symptoms and if you live in areas where swine flu cases have been identified. If you are sick you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to avoid spreading your illness.

Where can I go to obtain more information?

Additional information can be found at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization.
