Tuesday Night TV: House, My Name Is Earl

“House”
9 p.m., FOX
When Cuddy’s (Lisa Edelstein) handyman, Alfredo (guest star Ignacio Serricchio), falls from her roof and develops strange darkened pinkies, she joins the team to figure out what is wrong with him. After his hand is amputated to afford more diagnosis time, a trip to Alfredo’s neighborhood provides clues on the true nature of his illness.

“My Name is Earl”
9 p.m., NBC
Earl (Jason Lee) decides to quit smoking — but this proves to be more difficult than he imagined. In the meantime, Randy (Ethan Suplee) and Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) try to trick Earl into apologizing to an intimidating former classmate (guest star Silas Weir Mitchell), whom Earl let spend two years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

“Boston Legal”
10 p.m., ABC
“Boston Legal” returns for a sophomore season (on a new night) as Shore (James Spader) and Chase (Mark Valley) represent a beautiful murder defendant known as the “Black Widow” (guest star Heather Locklear) on trial for poisoning her much older husband. Rupert Everett (”My Best Friend’s Wedding”) also guest stars, and Julie Bowen (”Ed”) joins the cast as a new lawyer at Crane, Poole & Schmidt.

“Commander-in-Chief”
9 p.m., ABC
One of the most talked-about new series this season, “Commander-in-Chief” stars Oscar winner Geena Davis (”Thelma & Louise”) as Mackenzie Allen, the independent vice president of the United States. In tonight’s premiere, Mackenzie is interrupted during an official ceremony and told that the Republican president is undergoing emergency brain surgery; in the event he doesn’t recover, however, the party wants her to step down, allowing Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton (Donald Sutherland) to assume the post. After the president’s passing, and an insulting meeting with Templeton, Mackenzie decides to forge ahead and assume the presidency — uniting a stunned nation and a saddened Congress in the process. Kyle Secor (”Homicide,” “Veronica Mars”) also stars as “First Gentleman” Rod Allen.

“The Amazing Race: Family Edition”
9 p.m., CBS
“The Amazing Race” recently won its third consecutive Emmy award for best reality-competition program, and — not being one to rest on its laurels — the show has decided to kick it up a notch with the eighth installment. “TAR: Family Edition” will feature 10 teams of four family members on a trek around the world. At every destination, the families will compete in a series of challenges (just like previous seasons), and only when the tasks have been completed will they learn their next destination. Among the clans are a father and three sons-in-law from Massachusetts and a family from New Orleans. One team will eventually earn the $1 million prize. Lucky stiff Phil Keoghan hosts.

“Sex, Love & Secrets”
9 p.m., UPN
Set in the “edgy” Hollywood-adjacent neighborhood of Silver Lake, “Sex, Love & Secrets” follows a group of sufficiently attractive twentysomethings as they deal with the “complex human relationships and friendships” they encounter each day. So says UPN, at least. Hank (James Stevenson) is the lead singer of a pseudo-punk band and — while still a wild musician at heart — he’s ready to settle down with his celebrity-profiling journalist girlfriend Rose (Lauren German). But Hank’s plans to propose are thwarted when a relationship from Rose’s past comes back to haunt her. Denise Richards (”Empire,” “Scary Movie 3″) and Eric Balfour (”Six Feet Under”) also star.

“Gilmore Girls”
8 p.m., The WB
Excited about catering the wedding, Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) pressures Lorelai (Lauren Graham) to set a date — but Lorelai won’t commit. Meanwhile, Rory (Alexis Bledel) starts her job at Emily’s (Kelly Bishop) D.A.R. office while confronting her feelings about dropping out of Yale, and Lane (Keiko Agena) and her band return from their summer tour.
