WORLD SERIES TROPHY COMPLETES TOUR OF MASSACHUSETTS

When the Red Sox announced the World Series Trophy Tour presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery in January, club President/CEO Larry Lucchino pledged to take the Trophy to each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts that requested a visit. On Friday, June 24, the Trophy made its way to Gosnold (population 86) in the Elizabeth Islands at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod, the smallest town in the state and the 351st and final stop on the unprecedented Trophy Tour.

Lucchino, Massachusetts State Treasurer and Lottery Chairman Timothy P. Cahill, and Massachusetts State Lottery Executive Director Joseph C. Sullivan celebrated the milestone at a Fenway Park send-off for the Trophy before Lucchino transported the Trophy via helicopter to Gosnold. Other club and Lottery officials traveled via ferry from New Bedford to the public viewing at Avalon Club (Inn at Cuttyhunk).

Since the Red Sox captured their first World Championship since 1918, the World Series Trophy has made numerous appearances in each of the other five New England states as well as stops in Washington, DC; New York; California; Florida; Georgia; South Carolina; Maryland; Delaware; New Jersey and even in the Dominican Republic. The Trophy has traveled via planes, trains, automobiles, helicopters and boats.

Since January, however, the focus of the celebration has been on the state of Massachusetts, where the Trophy has appeared with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Lottery at events large and small on town greens, in town halls, at Little League fields, in private homes, at schools, veterans’ homes, hospitals and retirement homes.

“Because of the unique relationship our club enjoys with the fans of Red Sox Nation, we knew when we won the World Series that we wanted to share the celebration with our fans in new and different ways,” Lucchino said.

“With the help of the Massachusetts State Lottery, we have been able to take the Trophy—and the celebration— directly to our fans, into their towns, their schools and their homes. After 86 years, the response in all 351 cities and towns has been enormous and deeply gratifying. We go to thank them; they use the occasion to thank us.”

The tour culminatedin Gosnold, the least-populated municipality in Massachusetts, which comprises a chain of small islands along the eastern boundary of Buzzards Bay known as the Elizabeth Islands. Accessible only by air or water, they extend south-westward for 16 miles from the Falmouth village of Woods Hole, at the Southwestern tip of Cape Cod, toward Rhode Island Sound.

“We are proud to have been part of this incredible journey with the Red Sox,” said State Treasurer Cahill. “When the Lottery and the Red Sox became partners on the 2004 World Championship Trophy Tour, no one could have imagined how much joy the Trophy would bring to the residents of Massachusetts. With the tour now complete, everyone can now focus on the next important goal – back-to-back championship seasons.”

“Thanks to the 2004 World Championship Trophy Tour, Red Sox Nation was beaming from Pittsfield to Provincetown and everywhere in between,” said Lottery Executive Director Sullivan. “This tour paired two world-class organizations–the Red Sox and the Lottery–and we look forward to continuing a successful partnership.”
