XBOX 360 vs. PS3: an in Depth Look
All gamers are awaiting the release of the Xbox 360 versus PS3. This article takes an in depth look at how the two systems compare.
XBOX 360 vs. PS3 – The Graphics:
Everyone has seen an Xbox and a PS2 in action and we are all waiting to see which of the two next generation consoles for the two systems will have the edge when it comes to graphics. We have all seen the screenshots of the games on the two systems but what about actual gameplay graphics. Despite the hot debate, when you look at the numbers the two systems use a different but equally effective method of delivering graphics processing power. The XBOX uses a custom ATI processor with 48 graphics pipelines and the PS2 has a custom NVIDA graphics processor with an estimated 24 pipelines.
XBOX 360 vs. PS3 – The Games:
The numbers are misleading because the PS2 piplines are more powerful than the XBOX pipelines. In the end the two different graphics processors will deliver about the same amount of power, we can expect to see impressive results from both sides.
Both systems have several franchise titles such as Halo2 for the XBOX and Gran Tourismo for the PS2 that you will see in the next generation systems, but what other games can you expect to see. If you are a fan of genres such as role playing that are dominated by Japanese and other foreign developers such as Square, you should look forward to the PS3. There is no indication that the XBOX 360 is going to gain much more support from foreign developers and buyers than the original XBOX. An article on GameSpot.com reports that only two percent of Japanese gamers are interested in buying an XBOX 360, with sixty percent looking forward to the PS3 and eight percent to the Nintendo Revolution. Overall you can expect to see more games on the PS3 than the XBOX 360, reflecting the selection for the current generation systems. Only time will which console will have the quality of games which all of us are been expecting

The Xbox 360 games will be stored on Double Layer DVDs which store 9 gigs. Obviously the BLUray discs can store a lot more data, but at the current stage of game development, any game developed will fit just as well on the 9 gig DVDs, so this is not a major factor but one that may come into play later on.

XBOX 360 vs. PS3 – Processing Power:
How do the two systems compare when looking at brute processing power? The PS3 uses a Cell processor with a PowerPC-based core with seven synergistic processing units while the Xbox comes with a Custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three dual-threaded cores that can handle six total threads at a time. An important comparison to look at is the number of dot product calculations per second the systems can perform. The reason this number is important is because it is used extensively during gameplay in 3d math to calculate various things such as vector lengths, projections, transformations, and more. Both systems are clocked at 3.2 Ghz. The PS3 can handle 51-billion dot product operations per second and the Xbox can handle 33.6. There is a debate over which system has more brute processing power and these numbers can be confusing to the average person, but overall it seems that the PS3 has an edge over the Xbox when it comes to overall processing power.
XBOX 360 vs. PS3 – Controllers:
The controllers on the two systems retain the basic shape from the original systems with some modifications. The PS3 controller has the most dramatic change; it has a streamline shape that looks more like a stealth airplane than a game controller. The XBOX controller is basically the same shape as the previous system with a different color scheme. From the pictures released, it seems the XBOX controller will be more comfortable and natural to use. The PS3 controller looks like it would just slip out of your hand but we will not know how the controllers feel during actual gameplay until we get our hands on them.

This is stupid. I like them being a shooter box, I don’t want to play barbie. I like 360, and game consoles but they need to focus on gamers, not on what parents and little girls like.

The disk swapping video shows that eventually you will be able to play home made xbox 360 cds while you switch cds while the xbox is reading it, but to do that you have to remove the top cover.
Ok i see that’s pretty cool. It sounds like it would be too much trouble though. And it does sound a little bit risky considering you could ruin the disk drive. I still don’t understand the PSP one though. Would you mind explaining that one too?

I always have problems getting my hands on PS2 games, coz they are restricted in supply depending on which country you’re in. For Japan and US its not a problem, but it is for rest of the world. It’ll be same problem for PS3. Xbox has in mind to treat the world gamers more fairly. So my $ is on Xbox.

Well, the PS3 has much more computing power, a total of 2 TFlops, whereas the X360 has got around 1.
But how much of this power can be used will depend greatly on developers and if they’re willing to try to milk as many polygons out of the console as they can. X360 should be much, much easier to develop for, whereas PS3 may be so hard to develop for, that all of that extra power under the hood may not even be usable.
The processors are very similar, despite what zealots may try to convince you- both have Power PC based cores clocked at 3.2GHz, which is where most of the computing is really going to be done. Xbox360 has two more cores clocked at 3.2Ghz, but chances are that they won’t be of much use, and the same to PS3′s 7 SPEs.
Both have GPUs clocked at simlar amounts, but differences in architecture may make Xenos(X360′s) more usable, although it’s clocked 50Mhz lower than RSX(PS3′s)
So here we are, both use a 3.2Ghz PowerPC core for most of it’s needs, and both have GPUs clocked at 500-550Mhz.
What’s going to show if PS3 can actually excel, is if it’s complex, unusable(well, atleast X360 fans will say so) are going to beat a similarly powered X360, but with much simpler coding for developers, that they’ll ACTUALLY be able to take advantage of.
plus you can’t forget that the ps3 hasn’t even come out yet so they might be lieing.

I don’t know if you’re trying to list a point of X360′s media playing attributes, or if you’re just being ignorant with this comment.
Anywho, when there was all of that talk about PS3 being a hotspot and locationfree player for PSP, I was going crazy about it. But after reading the official, final(atleast thats how I percieved it),I’m not even sure of what their going to put under the hood anymore.
But if the preceeding becomes a reality, that would boost PS3 and PSP sales… even if only around the house, who wouldn’t want a handheld capable of streaming TV directly to your PSP? Now THAT, would be ownage, even if there isn’t much use for it- for bragging rights alone.
I’m afraid about the gaming quality on both consoles though- X360 looks great when you’ve got HD, but on my TV it looks only slightly better than Xbox. I wouldn’t even call it a Xbox 1.5… more like a Xbox 1.2 or something. I hope that trend doesn’t move onto PS3 also, otherwise I’ll end up saving my meager earnings for a new TV :[
I think that when you play a game on a normal TV, the graphics can’t get much better than PS2 and Xbox graphics. I tried playing CounterStrike Source on my TV and it looked only a little better than a PS2 game. I don’t get why a DVD can look so nice on a TV while CS:Source can look so bad.
I just thought about the Revolution in this console war. Although it’s far less powerful, it’s supposedly being taylored for lower definition televisions. Now while this might sound bad, we have to realize that like 90% of households in the US don’t have HD.
I play my X360 at home and it looks a little better than the original Xbox, but when I bring it over to my friend’s house down the street the graphics take a sudden big jump.
Considering Revolution should be considerably better than the original Xbox, at the average household in America, Revolution should be able to compete strongly graphics-wise: being close, or possibly even being a little better looking on non-HD televisions.
For this reason, I’m glad that PS3 chose 720p as it’s standard over 1080i or 1080p. It’ll make the games a little better for those of us not willing to dish out $3000-4000 at launch, and it’ll probably make ports back and forth between X360 and PS3 easier(I believe it’s the standard for MS too).
I thought the PS3 standard resolution was 1080p. It will also support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i.

the information pits and flats on a blue ray disc are so small that they require a high frequency blue laser to read them….you better not scratch that blue ray disc or youre f##cked—
even the smallest scratch will mess it up, and blue ray disc wont be cheap, thats why microsoft went with DVD—they are already advertsing blue ray movies at 40US$ thats a little steap

ok, the PS3 is the more powerdful machine. The original xbox came out about a year after the PS2, and the PS2 was still competing against it. When the PS2 was made it was made when DVD’s were juyst coming in and now the PS3 is coming out, right when blu-ray is coming in. PS3 will have better and stronger graphics because of the hardware it uses. Sure, xbox 360 does look great, but the PS3 has more powerfull hardware. It will display better graphics. Also, if u want to stay in the present then you need a blu-ray disc player. A blu-ray player usuyally cost 1000$ and the PS3 is only 600$. Thats a 400$ price off for the same product and moe. Now the games…PS3 has Square Enix on their side… Just cuz the xbox 360 has FF11 doesnt mean anything. That is one final fantasy product and as far as i know, Square Enix has no plans for any further FF games on the xbox consoles. Besides FF11 is a mmorpg and with otheras like world of warcraft, it sucks. A lot of 360 games look good and are good, but PS3 has their own games aswell. They have videos of gameplay on youtube.com. If you want to see some then look up, motorstorm gameplay trailer, resistance fall of man gameplay, and warhawk gameplay. Microsoft also had more games to show off at E3 because they could use games from the PS while PS3 only has its own console games. Also the PS3 games will run faster because of more space on the blu-ray disc. Because of the free space the game shoul;d not take long at all to lead and shuld have a really smooth framerate. Also, The PS2 was out before the xbox and therefor had online capabilites before the xbox. it cant copy something that hasnt come out yet. And the PS3 online gaming promises to live up to the same as XBOX LIVE except ITS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sony cant delay the PS3 launch any longer because the manufacturers are already distributing them. And actually, i thionk the PS3 online will run better because everyones consoles will be running at sdame speed instead of someones crappy internet messing everyone up….

I don’t think that ps3 games will suck, but there is still alot of problems with the ps3. The price will be a big problem because people thought the xbox 360 was expensive, so do you think they’ll want to buy something that is 100 dollars more expensive? and nobody cares if the ps3 has a cheaper bluray they usually go for the cheaper one that doesn’t cost near as much such as hd dvd. plus there’s more games than halo 3, there’s oblivion, gears of war, ghost recon, ff 11, it doesn’t rely on just halo 3. plus ps3 has so much new hardware so it’s expensive and could have a bunch of problems.

The PS3 will ofcourse be alot better than the Xbox360. Yes, the price is high, but that’s how you can tell the PS3 is so good. Expensive hardware = good hardware. Plus the games are alot better than the 360′s games. The 360 has games like, Halo, Gears of War, Oblivion… While the PS3 has games like Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Warhawk, Resistance, Final Fantasy, and more. There are going to be alot more great games on PS3 than the Xbox360. Plus the PS3 has alot of better features, like the tilt controller, 40 more GB’s of space than the 360, the ability to upload videos, the ability to use the internet, firmware updates, the ability to use memory sticks, and many more.
So, don’t get a 360. If you already have one, throw it in the garbage, or donate it to http://www.smashmyxbox.com.
only because i’m able to afford all three systems, i will own all three. however sony has a habbit of over promising, the xbox 360 is an incredible machine. the blu-ray will not make that much of an INITIAL DIFFERENCE. by the time the technology is mastered the next console’s will be preparing their launch. that’s when microsoft will take advantage of the blu-ray.

Xbox 360 is a better system then ps3 . The components are better and i saw call of duty 3 side by side on both systems and xbox 360 looked way better not only that but have you seen the games coming out on xbox ??? No way sony can compete with that . gears of war is 10 times better game then metal gear solid . ps3 isnt what its hyped up to be and personaly wouldnt waist 600$ for it . my friend got the ps3 and when we did the comparison he returned it and got the xbox 360 instead
