Newton’s Cradle is a clever device that not only demonstrates a pendulum, but also shows the Laws of Conservation of Momentum and Energy. Friction and damping effects are also observed. This device is often used as a toy to amuse people. Newton’s Cradle was invented in 1967 by English actor Simon Prebble and named in honor of scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton because it employs Newton’s Laws.

The animation displays the idealized behavior of the Newton’s cradle apparatus, assuming nearly perfectly elastic, perfectly spherical balls of equal mass and composition. However, it does show slow loss of kinetic energy as the balls take some while to come to rest.

Knowing what to say and do when a friend loses their job or hits a financial rough spot is a challenge. You want to help, but have no idea where to begin. You also don’t want to stick your foot in your mouth or give bad advice and make the situation worse. Here are some easy-to-remember rules for helping a friend who’s unemployed.

Don’t be an ATM. Let’s get this out of the way first: If you care about your friendship you should never, ever loan a friend money. You should also never give them money hoping (and maybe even secretly expecting) that you’ll be paid back. This may never happen. Assume that anything you help them with, from buying them a Harpoon Winter Warmer beer to a small sack of groceries, is a gift. But don’t worry—the karma gods will reward you someday.

Be a good listener. What your friend will need most right now is an ear but don’t give her the silent treatment. Financial problems can cause a lot of stress, and your friend may be moody, negative, or emotional. Recognize her need to vent and be prepared to listen for as long as necessary. Don’t try to sugarcoat the situation and blindly assure her everything will be okay—this can seem patronizing. Just keep your mouth shut and your ears wide open.

Get creative. Think of easy ways you can help your friend in need without stressing yourself out or making it seem like you feel sorry for them. Start a carpool, or suggest a girl’s night in with cheap beer and movies instead of an expensive evening out. Next time you bake, wrap a few extras up for her she’ll appreciate a delicious treat, especially if chocolate or breakfasts out have been cut from the budget.

Offer advice… maybe. This rule comes with a big fat “Be Careful” sign attached. It isn’t your job to fix your friend’s troubles. That said, if you have an area of expertise that could be helpful, you can offer advice if it seems appropriate. If you’re a financial wizard, offer to help set up a budget spreadsheet. If she eats out a ton, share your favorite easy recipes. If she’s incapable of buying anything but designer labels, clue her in to your favorite low-end fashion haunts. If you choose to offer advice (and she accepts it!), keep the tone positive. Reassure her that she’s wildly talented and capable of dealing with whatever life throws at her.

Spread the word. If your friend defaulted on a loan she probably wouldn’t want you sharing that info with everyone you know. But if she lost a job, she might appreciate any free PR she can get. Offer to keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities. Help her make connections, prep for an interview, and rework her résumé. Remind her that rough spots are often a great opportunity to make big changes. If she’s been thinking about making a career shift or trying something new, now could be just the time to do it.

As this is the time of year that many people start making their New Year’s resolutions - personal and professional - I thought I’d share some of the best career management tips I know. Some of these I learned from others and some I learned the hard way. In any case, here goes:

#1 Do whatever Irene tells you to do and don’t embarrass me.
This one comes courtesy of my father. My first job was doing the payroll, manually, at his codfish processing plant in Witless Bay, Newfoundland. (Photo is my family in the harbor in front of that plant last summer). Irene was the long time office manager who knew how to make things happen. Getting to know the Irenes everywhere I’ve worked since has saved me time and embarrassment.

#2 Speak up. This one applies when you have a good idea and/or when you know that something just isn’t right. Organizations rise and fall on the quality and openess of communications between people.

Massachusetts law makers pushed forward the proposed ban to make same sex marriage illegal in it’s state. Although 132 voted against the ban, 62 members voted to get rid of gay marriage. Since the cutoff to keep a proposition alive is 50 votes, this one will appear for further consideration on the next legislative which then has the possibility of appearing on the next ballot in 2008.

So what effect would this proposed amendment have on Massachusetts marriages? It would clearly define that Massachusetts marriages would only be legal between a man and a woman. Therefor, same sex marriage would no longer be considered legal. And all the current same sex marriages in Massachusetts would be safe. If this amendment was voted in, it would have an effect on the same sex marriages that took place before it came into effect. All of the gay marriages occurring in Massachusetts prior to this ban would be grandfathered in. I just don’t understand why the fear of gays in this state.

Currently, Massachusetts is one of very few states to recognize same sex marriages. Which, being from Massachusetts myself, I am quite proud of. I personally do not agree with this ban and will vote against it when given the opportunity. Currently the number of couples that have had same sex marriages performed is up around 8,000. I personally hoped that once same sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts that other states would soon follow.

The Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, actually called the advancement of this ban “a huge victory for the people of Massachusetts”. Well, he does not speak for me and has lost my support over this. Well, I don’t know if he ever really had my support, he’s pretty goofy but that is neither here not there. He is using this as his rallying point for his run for office in the next election. Does he really get offended by same sex marriages so much that he would support that a ban on it be passed? I bet not.

Personally I don’t understand why this bothers people so much. If everyone would think about themselves we would be a lot better off in life. I say let Henry and Martha worry about Henry and Martha not about Sally and Cindy. My opinion on the matter is that legal Massachusetts marriages should continue to include same sex unions from now until the end of time.

Let’s start with a commonly misunderstood concept: Search engines don’t rank websites; they rank web pages.

Many people assume if they optimize their website for a number of keywords then all search traffic will go to their homepage. Actually the opposite is true; search engines look for relevant pages, not relevant websites. Search engines don’t just “think” in terms of your site as a whole; they mostly care about the page or pages relevant to the keyword searched for.

Let’s use Wikipedia to illustrate the point. Wikipedia is a great example, because if you perform a search for just about any keyword, a Wikipedia page is likely to show up in the top five results. If you search for “Napoleon,” for example, the Wikipedia result will take you to Wikipedia’s Napoleon page, not to the Wikipedia homepage.

That’s how search engines work: They look for relevant pages. To optimize your site, you’ll need to keep that fact in mind. Instead of thinking globally, mentally break your site up into different parts and pieces. If you want to rank high for a particular keyword, you probably will need a separate page focused on that term if it is not relevant to your homepage.

Basic Page Optimization

We’ll use Google to illustrate the following points; in general the other major search engines function in the same way.

Google looks for these things to identify the theme of a web page:

• Page Title: The page title is the text that appears in the blue bar at the top of your browser. Google uses the page title (also called the title tag) to identify pages and show users the relevance of the page. The page title also shows up as the link when a search result is returned. Keep title tags short and precise, between 8-9 words. Every page should have a different unique and relevant page title.
• Metadata: While meta tags aren’t as important as they used to be, including your main keywords in your page metadata can help Google differentiate between different pages. Make sure your metadata is specific to each individual page and that it doesn’t include any words that are not related to the text of that page.
• URL: The URL is the web address of a web page. Including relevant keywords in the page URL can help your rankings, so work with your webmaster to create static URLs with keywords included. Strike a balance, though – don’t try to have 10 different keywords in a URL.
• Text: The content of the page should be relevant to the topic mentioned in your title tag, metadata and URL. Make sure you mention your keywords as well as other words that relate to the basic theme of the page.

Please note: Lots of people focus on things like keyword density (the number of times the keyword is mentioned) and keyword patterns (where the keyword is found, like in the first paragraph, first sentence, last sentence, etc.). Google algorithms continue to become more intelligent, and in my opinion, your best bet is to instead write your content with the user in mind. Write for your visitors and you will almost always create content that Google “likes” too.

Think of it this way: Being number one in the search rankings is important, but if you’re number two and you’ve optimized your content for the user, you’ll probably get more repeat visitors and sales than if you create pages focusing exclusively on getting better search rankings.

If you currently operate a website, your webmaster can help you with each of the items above.

If you’re developing a new site, be sure your site is set up properly from the ground up. Make sure you can create title tags for each page, name each page with a separate URL, and include page specific metadata. The last thing you’ll want to do is to go back later and correct any basic site structure problems that you could have done right the first time.

Take Advantage of Internal Links
Internal links are links from pages on your site to other pages on your site. (In this case I’m referring to links within your text, not to navigation bar links.) You can improve your page rankings by linking directly to pages on your website by using one of your keywords as the link text. Google will follow those links and know your page is relevant for that topic. You’ve probably noticed Wikipedia uses internal links extensively; whenever a word is used that has a relevant article somewhere else on Wikipedia, that word gets an internal link.

Let’s go back to our Napoleon example. If a page on your site is devoted to Napoleon, and you also have a page devoted to the Duke of Wellington, link occurrences of “Duke of Wellington” on the Napoleon page to the Duke’s page – and when you mention Napoleon on the Duke’s page, link back to the Napoleon page. Your site will be more convenient for visitors and you will improve your search rankings too.

Get Relevant Inbound Links

Inbound links are links to your site from other sites. Relevant inbound links are links from sites that contain content related to your site. If you sell computer hardware, an inbound link from a software site is relevant; an inbound link from a pet supply store is not.

Google follows inbound links and uses them as a popularity contest of sorts; the more inbound links you have from relevant sites, the higher your page rankings. When you have links from “authority” sites – sites Google ranks highly – your pages will rank even higher. Again, getting inbound links is not just a way to optimize your site for SEO purposes; each inbound link also creates a natural way for a visitor to find you by following that link.

Your goal is to get as many relevant inbound links as possible. Find sites that provide related products or related services that don’t specifically compete with you. Ask for an inbound link to the relevant page. (You may also decide to link back to their site, but only do this with relevant content that makes sense for your readers. Don’t trade links with the sole purpose of better rankings.)

Then find industry hubs for your niches. Search for “cooking articles” or cooking directories and some of the results will be directories that exist to help people find cooking related articles. Also try using words like “organization” or “non-profit” with your keywords when you search. In some cases you may have to pay a small fee for an inbound link, but if the site in question is a relevant and trusted source, the cost of that link could make sense.

You can also find bloggers related to your niches; send them a great article or resource and they may create a new post and link back to you. Here’s a simple approach: Go to Technorati, type in a keyword, find blogs related to your keywords, send them an article, and see if you can get a link back to your page. Some visitors will find you simply by clicking on that link, and at the same time Google will rank your page higher.

Note: Some services automate the process of link exchanges. Exchanging links with non-relevant sites may provide a short-term boost but will catch up to you in the long run, and Google can eventually penalize you because almost all of your inbound links are irrelevant. For example, pet-related sites shouldn’t link to cooking-related sites, plus you won’t get many visitors from those irrelevant sites.

Pay particular attention to getting links from directories. Trusted directories include sites like Yahoo Directory, botw.org and Business.com. If you have quality content you can often collect links from major directories.

Check Out Your Competitors

Search for your keywords and check out the pages that rank highly. How many times is the keyword used in the text? How is the title tag written? Which keywords are in the URL?

You can also see how many inbound links your competitors have. On Yahoo, enter the text link:www.(nameofsite).com and you’ll see all inbound links to that page. Those same sites may also be willing to link to you. If multiple pages ranked in the top 10 have links from similar sites, go after getting those links first – those sites are probably trusted sources.

Get Your New Site Noticed

Google will eventually find your new website, but you can speed up the process. The best way is to get inbound links from trusted sites; when Google crawls those sites it will follow that link to your site – and you’ll get noticed.

You can also submit your site directly to Google for crawling. Using the basic Site Submit can take months; a better approach is to submit your site at Google’s Webmaster Central. You’ll have to add a small piece of code to your site’s HTML code so Google can verify you are the owner of your site, so your programmer may need to help you. (The process only takes a few minutes, though.) Your pages will then be crawled and hopefully indexed in days instead of weeks or months.

Yahoo also has a site submit process. Search “submit site” on Yahoo and you can get details on free site submissions as well as paid submissions and submissions to the Yahoo Directory.

Above All, Consider Your Visitors
Google looks at a variety of factors for ranking your pages. Content is important, but don’t add new content just to get Google to visit.

Why? Your site needs to provide good resources for your visitors. Build your site for your audience and you’ll naturally do the things search engines want and you’ll rank better. For example, many of the hugely popular blog sites don’t focus on SEO; they concentrate on their audience and on getting exposure. As a result, they have a lot of links and the search engines rank them highly. Search engines want people to find what they are looking for; build your site with your audience in mind and over time the search engines will reward your efforts.

Getting Crawled

To find out how often your site is crawled, enter “site:www.(nameofyoursite.com)” on Google and you’ll see all your pages Google has indexed. The “cached” link next to each pages indicates the last time that page was cached. (On average it takes about two weeks for Google to check out non-dormant sites and re-rank pages. Some sites are indexed every few days; some major sites get updated multiple times per day.) Check this every day and you’ll quickly determine how frequently your site is crawled.

At the same time you’ll get a sense of how well your entire site is performing. If you have 400 pages and only five are indexed, you likely need more inbound links and optimization on the non-indexed pages.

Then make intelligent changes to improve your page rankings. Change your title tags. Change the content so your keywords are featured. Add internal links where appropriate. Get more – always get more – relevant inbound links.

Halloween is creeping (oooh spooky) up on us pretty quickly so it’s time once again to start thinking about popular Halloween costume ideas.

If you don’t remember last year’s list, let me give you just a taste. It included things such as Rob & Big’s Bobby Light Costume, the diaper wearing astronaut psycho Lisa Nowak, and the ever popular Dick in a Box costume. Anyone who actually dressed up as any of these characters can tell you… they were a big hit.

So without any further ado, let’s list some popular 2008 Halloween Costume Ideas.

Sarah Palin Costume

I figured we would start off with the obvious… politics. Now if you are going a couples costume you could obviously go with either Sarah Palin and John McCain or you could go with Sarah Palin and Barack Obama. Either would work out fine.
But… if you wanted to be a little different you could go as Tina Fey dressed as Sarah Palin.

Amy Winehouse Costume

Ahhh, Amy Winehouse. She brought us tons of entertainment this year. It’s only fit that we honor her by dressing up as her on Halloween and mocking the tragedy that is her life.

There are two different versions of the Amy Winehouse costume that you could do and both would be completely acceptable.

Blonde Amy Winehouse Costume - For this version of the Amy Winehouse costume you will need a bleach blond wig that has the texture of straw. You’ll need heavy eyeliner that flares out into wings on either side of your eyes. You’ll also need a crackpipe and… no that’s it.
Classic Amy Winehouse Costume (missing tooth and all) - Classic Amy Winehouse Costume - you’ll want to go with the dark haired bouffant style that we have all come to identify with Amy. You’ll need to simulate a missing front tooth. You’ll also need a crackpip and… no that’s it.

Messing With Sasquatch, Sasquatch costume

It’s not very often that TV commercials are both enjoyable and funny but Jack Link’s Beef Jerky has blessed us with some this year. They are called “Messin With Sasquatch”.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia costumes

For anyone who is a fan of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, they know that this show is just busting with possible Halloween Costumes.

Day Man Dennis and Charlie Costume - this costume is going to require some work. You’ll need to find clothes similar to what Ziggy Stardust (David Bowey) wore. Not easy but so worth it. Along with dressing like a femmed out rock star you’ll also get to spend the night singing the Day Man lyrics which, let’s face it, are genius.

The McPoyle’s - This costume is very easy, and might I say, comfy. You will need a bathrobe, tighty whiteys, and a glass of milk. You’ll also want to make yourself look as sweaty as possible. Those are all the ingredients you’ll need for the perfect McPoyle’s costume.

2008 Movie Halloween Costume Ideas

Although there were tons of great movies to pick from this year, I figured I would list the most popular and the easiest.

The Joker costume - Now you could either go for the classic Joker look which would include a purple blazer or you could go for the updated Joker look… nurse joker. This would be based on the hospital scene in this year’s Dark Night Movie. You would keep the Joker face going but your clothes would be a nurse’s uniform. Either way, the Joker costume is very easy and very recognizable.

Hancock costume - I know you’re saying “where and I supposed to get a spandex superhero costume?”. My answer… “you’re not”. You’re going to go for the Hancock in the beginning of the movie. You’ll need some bummy clothes, kit hat, sunglasses and… alcohol. Perfect.

Apple PR has yet to respond to rumors online and on twitter that Steve Jobs was rushed to the hospital with a heart attack today. With Apple’s recent stock drop and the current state of the financial market right now it doesn’t seem unlikely.

I’m constantly checking the San Jose Mercury, Sunnyvale Sun, Cupertino Courier web site and the SFGate and NewYorkTimes web sites but nothing is reporting about any Steve Jobs being rushed to the emergency room yet.

UPDATE on Steve Jobs Heart Attach Scare:

An electronic gaffe at news outlet Bloomberg mistakenly sent an incomplete obituary for Apple CEO Steve Jobs over the wire on Wednesday afternoon, and a tipster promptly sent the soon-retracted file to gossip blog Gawker.

The lengthy file contains not only a preliminary obituary for the iconic Apple chief, but also a list of suggested contacts for a more extensive story–Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and early Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki, among others.

The summary of Jobs’ accomplishments, per the obituary, is that he “helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music, and refashioned the mobile phone.”

It’s not out of the ordinary at all that Bloomberg would have this written; all major news outlets have notable persons’ obituaries prepared in advance so that only minor changes need be made at the actual time of death. That way, the news can be reported almost immediately and can be updated with further detail.

Bloomberg released a retraction later on Wednesday that made only the vaguest of reference to the content of the gaffe. “An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m. New York time today,” the retraction read. “The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted.”

Now here’s a bail out plan that works!

I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in “We Deserve It Dividend”.

To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 ± counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a “We Deserve It Dividend”.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free.

So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.

That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? I know that would have helped to improve my online reputation problem I had in the past.

Pay off your mortgage and avoid forclosure - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads with student debt consolidation loans

Put away money for college - it’ll be there

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create jobs

Invest in the market - capital drives growth

Pay for your parent’s medical insurance - health care improves

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it… instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( “vote buy” ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it.

Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General.

Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t.

Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.”

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom?

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion “We Deserve It Dividend” more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.

And remember, this plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
