Lowell Studio Photography

Recent Studio Photography Sessions

A few recent photos from a studio session I had earlier this year. It’s fun shooting indoors under the bright glamour lights sometimes. It breaks up the routine of shooting outdoors and stirs up some of the creative juices sometimes.

This fall after the foliage is gone I plan on setting up some shoots with local models and artists and having a networking night. Come see a Lowell photographer and get your portraits done and meet up with other local creative people. I’ll update here as plans come together.

Most Popular Flash Games of 2012

Over the years, flash games have climbed the ladder of popularity as one of American’s favorite pastimes. For those of you interested in finding out what a flash game is, a flash game is a type of computer game that uses a web browser to operate.

One perk that a flash game has is that it is a fantastic way of connecting thorough the internet with other game enthusiasts, as you can play in different multiplayer modes. If playing multiplayer isn’t your style, single player games are available. Another perk of these games is that they are very low cost and in fact, most of these games are free and don’t require any form of payment at all. This is great for gamers who have low resources but still would like a hobby.

Also, popular flash games have a game that will suite everyone’s taste. New breakthroughs in technology including Java and Flash allow flash games to become more complex. Many of these games have originated in the year of 1980. Pac Man was the most popular of the decade, and even today it continues to be a favorite of many gamers. Pac Man is a flash game because it is a classic game that is simple but keeps your mind working at all times. This game is the most widely used one.

Popular Flash GamesIn the beginning of their development, these games had very limited multiplayer play. The closest thing to multiplayer play during that period was single player play with a high score list of all the players. But fast forward to our current day, and thanks to the current advances in technology, multiplayer received a new face, as in the case of castle of throes or Canaan online.

For younger generations, games that usually have a type of animal and involve taking care of that said animal are always favored. Popular flash games that involve animals include Neopets and Club Penguin. These games are centered on caring for your “pet” by making sure it is “fed” and taken care of.

Web based technologies such as Ajay are used to create a more complex multiplayer interaction. To make this actually possible, computer programmers use web based technology to generate hardware accelerated 3D graphic without plugins.
A great bonus of the popular flash games is that the risk of contracting a bug is very low. This is due to the fact that they do not use a lot of bandwidth. The games are very easy, and you don’t have to have a background in computer programming to play. All you need is an internet access, a computer, and some free time.

2012 has offered great new games for the year. The most loved flash games for 2012 are:

  1. Spelunky – This is a game about basic emotions such as anger and hate. Death also makes a large part of this game. It is a game modeled after an Indian pastiche set in a cavern full of traps and tricks, and you must maneuver your self around them. I have played this game, and it is very simple when it comes to avoiding enemies, and “Traps” is super easy.
  2. Nethack – A classic game that makes heavy use of randomization, and gives you a jam packed adventure with many twists and turns.
  3. Quake like- A death matched game like no other. It has very high ratings.

And the list goes on and on. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of flash games. It is a great pastime as long as it doesn’t take over your life. Play with moderation, and I hope you find the best one for your liking.

The Joys of Cat Training

cat trainingSome people think that you can’t train a cat. They think that cats are not smart enough to be trained or that they are too stubborn. These people are sadly misinformed – and they have never met my well-trained cat, Missy. Cats are intelligent creatures and have been known to open doors, play fetch, walk on a leash and even communicate with their owners. Training a cat, like training any animal, will initially be difficult. However, if you are consistent and determined you will find that cat training can be a very rewarding experience for you and your feline friend.

The first step in training your cat is making sure that you and your cat have developed a strong relationship. For the first few months, Missy and I did not get along well. She was nervous around me and was still getting used to her new surroundings. I spent time with her, feeding her on a regular schedule, playing, petting and talking with her until we bonded. After that, it was much easier for me to train her.

After you and your cat have bonded you can introduce her to cat training. You can train a cat to do many things including tricks, stop clawing, walk on a leash and even to use the toilet. The first thing I trained Missy to do was sit. This was the hardest trick to teach her because it was her first. I found that she responded best when I reinforced her with her favorite treat. I didn’t want to overwhelm her so we only trained for 5 minutes a day every day. After about two weeks, she mastered sit. Now, she sits on her own without a treat.

The best time to start to train a cat is when he is still a kitten. Young cats are eager to learn and love to be mentally stimulated. However, it is important not to over-task your kitten, or they will get frustrated or bored and it will be harder to train them in the future. Practice cat training a few minutes every day and don’t start a new trick until your cat has learned the first one. Once while training Missy, I forgot to watch the clock. She wasn’t responding well and I didn’t know why – until I saw the time. I had been training her for 20 minutes and she was tired and bored.

After I taught Missy how to sit, it was much easier to teach her other things. She had a problem of clawing furniture even though she had a scratching post. I learned about how to tell her “no” when she clawed furniture and to place her by the scratching post. When I saw her using the post, I gave her a treat. After a month she stopped clawing furniture.

Now that Missy was doing well with her cat training, I decided to teach her a very difficult task: to toilet train the cat. It took me nearly 3 months to train her properly, and it was very difficult, but in the end it was worth it. I read an article about how to toilet train a cat, which offered tips such as having a separate toilet for the cat and using an aluminum tray to make the process easier. At first Missy did not want to use the tray, but she soon adapted. I always made sure to give her a treat after she used the tray. Now she is fully toilet trained (except she doesn’t flush – yet!).

When you train your cat, the sky is the limit. In addition to training your cat to be a well-behaved member of your household, you can teach her many tricks. Continue to be patient and bond with your cat and the possibilities will be limitless.

How I Relieve My Sinus Pressure

How I relieve my sinus pressureI’m sitting here at 4:30 in the morning on a sunday morning and I’m Googling for answers on how to relieve my sinus pressure in my head. I haven’t been able to sleep much the last few days and it’s starting to get to me emotionally.

My nose is now clear enough because I had to use Afrin but that will only work for a few days before I get addicted to the Afrin and have that rebound thing happen and make it worse.

Besides the obvious of being tired and feeling like hell I’m also getting the sweats and my joints are sore and uncomfortable. 3 Advils usually take care of that but I thought while I’m up at the crack of dawn here I would write a post about how I relieve this sinus pressure to get healthy. Google Hurdles Scores – Have You Played This Yet?

The Google Hurtles game is great. So you’ve probably seen the new Google Doodle up now. What’s your best Google Hurtles score? Google has created a new hurdling mini-game as its latest Google Doodle. The fully-playable game is the search engine’s latest doodle in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Visitors to the Google homepage see the usual logo replaced with a YouTube-style play button. After pressing it, tapping the left and right cursor arrows makes the pictured cartoon hurdler accelerate, and pressing the space bar makes him jump the on-screen hurdles. Athletes who miss-time their jumps knock the hurdles over and slow themselves down, as in the real event.

What’s your fastest record time in the Google Hurdles?

So what’s your secret and how are you hacking this new Google Hurdles game so you can get the best score possible?

Laptop Lifestyle

The Laptop Lifestyle I Want to Live

20120802-002053.jpgWoke up from a dream (nightmare?) this morning wondering why I’m driving 2 hours a day to and from a job that can be done from practically anywhere in the world. And why am I putting up with this daily aggravation at a fixed income and making some other person’s company wealthy. As hard as I work it doesn’t matter, I still bring home the same paycheck.

I can see it from the business owner too. They start a company and need help growing it into a profit driven revenue generating machine so they can sit back and profit. So they hire people at a fair wage and demand good work for their salary they’re paying out. They hired me because someone saw an article I wrote about using social media for small business marketing and then offered me a job. I get it.

But I don’t want to have to retire at 67 or so and wished I went out on my own and took charge of my life. I’ve seen relatives of mine stop working late into their 60′s and when it’s time to slow down and enjoy their lives and families, they can barely get out of the chair.

So who am I and who am to complain driving on my way to work at 7:30 am talking into my iPhone recording and transcribing this blog post using Dragon Naturally Speaking? Maybe you’ve seen me on Larry King Live or been to my social media cheating website talking about how people use social media for their personal

Ya see I’m an online marketer, Lowell MA photographer, wannabe entrepreneur and Dad. Those are my hobbies, passions and jobs. Not in any order of importance of course. I’m always thinking of how I can work less and achieve more.

So on my way to work and stuck in 5 mph traffic on the highway I’m thinking what can I do to put together and create a website or online business where I’m the boss. There’s plenty of “get rich from home” books out there you can read that will hype you up and start making Millions from the comfort of your poolside chair. I’ve bought some of them and I know for a fact that they’re not all that practical.

It’s smarter in my opinion to create a sustainable business that will generate revenue regardless of trends, seasons or the economy. I’ve built websites and sold them for great money but that money goes away quicker than you acquired it and then your left with nothing. One website I made sold for $30,000 a few years back. I put $10k in the bank and the rest of it disappeared into furniture, flat screen tv’s, vacations and even loaning a friend money who conveniently disappeared shortly afterward.

Last night I was looking at a list of all the domain names I own. If there was a decent website for each one I would be in a great position.

But there’s not. Know why?

It takes hard work to make money online. Enough traffic and revenue where you don’t have to constantly sit down at night at the dinner table and look over at your 10 year old son and think that you’d like to spend more time with him.

Like tomorrow.

Like you don’t want to go to work and run meaningless weekly reports for some executive that doesn’t care about them much or even understand them.

So what I’ll be doing over the next few weeks is documenting what I’m doing to build up my business. I’ll share how and why I’ll be doing things so those that read this can follow along. Maybe if you decide to do the same share in the comments or send me an email.

The Dangers of Too Much Caffeine

When people think of caffeine they think of coffee and soda, but caffeine is also in medicine, tea, energy drinks and more. Many people rely on caffeine to give them a boost of energy through the day, but consuming too much caffeine can have negative health consequences. Caffeine can even be dangerous to your health and sometimes death.

Once the body relies on caffeine to get going, it becomes an addictive substance. There are millions of people who can’t get through the day without a cup of coffee, soda or an energy drink. The boosting of energy happens in about 30 minutes, but decreases quickly. This is known as an energy crash.

Art by Valinor

This crash includes symptoms of fatigue and headache. They are eased when the person has another dose of caffeine. Consuming too much caffeine can make a person dependent on it in order to function on a daily basis.

Moderate consumption of caffeine is generally considered safe. This is a very small amount at 250 milligrams, which is equal to three cups of coffee per day. Even this, however, can be misleading. Many people are sensitive to caffeine without realizing it, and this small amount can produce negative effects, and lead to withdrawal symptoms when consumption is stopped.

Children should not consume caffeine. It is taxing on their body as it expends energy for growth, brain development and bone development. Caffeine disrupts this process, and produces side-effects mentioned below. These side-effects are often worse in children than in adults.

Side Effects of Too Much Caffeine

The very reason many people consume caffeine is for the energy boost, but this boost is caused by the causing a chemical reaction in the adrenal gland that controls the fight or flight response of the body. Too much caffeine can cause adrenal fatigue because it keeps the body in fight or flight mode indefinitely.

This can lead to severe fatigue that even caffeine can not help.

Anxiety is another side effect of drinking more caffeine than you should. Those sensitive to caffeine will experience anxiety with minimal doses.

The risk of osteoporosis increases with high doses of caffeine. The body’s ability to absorb calcium is reduced leading to a decrease in bone mass density.

The over consumption of caffeine can cause difficulty sleeping. This is because caffeine is a stimulant, and using too much does not allow the body to get the signals that it should rest.

While a small amount of caffeine may help a headache, too much can cause one. It’s true that caffeine is the active ingredient in many pain medicines, but the dosage in those medicines is low. Taking a medication with caffeine on top of drinking or eating foods with caffeine can produce the opposite effect.

The pain from fibrocystic breast disease is increased with the use of caffeine.

Caffeine is passed through the placenta to the baby of a pregnant mother. When the mother’s heart rate and metabolism increase, the baby is negatively impacted.

Caffeine causes more frequent urination, and when used in excess can cause dehydration.

Understanding Caffeine Withdrawal

When someone decides they want to cut caffeine from their diet after habitually over consuming, they are immediately hit with withdrawal symptoms such as headache, fatigue, irritability and depression. This is because the chemical response that the body has relied on is no longer provided.

Withdrawal can last anywhere from two to nine days, and begin anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after cutting caffeine from the diet.

The best method to take caffeine from the diet is to go slowly by reducing intake over a period of time.

Withdrawal symptoms are still likely, but the severity will be reduced if this method is used.

How to Prevent Bullying in School – Statistics Show Rise in Bullycide

Bullying in school seems to be a problem that is on the rise. While this may have to do with the self esteem issues of the people doing the bullying more than the person being bullied themselves, it is still a problem that needs to be addressed and one that schools all over the world have to recognize. Preventing bullying is something that every student, teacher, and parent should be involved in and work hard at to make sure anyone attending school feels safe and comfortable.

Through various studies it has been estimated that approximately one out of every sixteen students have been bullied every school term. This sad fact means that for every classroom there is at least one student who is being bullied by others. While many cases of bullying go unrecorded and even unrecognized by anyone other than the bullies and people being bullied, there are other cases that are more publicized, and even some that have lead to suicide. These unfortunate events have even lead to a new term known as Bullycide, which is used to describe a suicide in which the person took their life because of the bullying that was part of their life.

A recent case is that of Phoebe Prince, a 15 year old who hung herself at the beginning of this year as a result of the bullying she encountered at her western Massachusetts high school during her freshman year. It was her case which led the state legislature to pass some stringent anti-bullying bills, which is something that every state, and even the federal government, needs to consider. Nine of her tormentors are now facing criminal charges that include stalking, criminal harassment, and even statutory rape.

While this is only one example of the tragedy that is brought on by bullying, the question of how to prevent bullying in school remains. The first step in prevention is being aware of some of the signs that a child is being bullied.

Signs Of Bullying You Need to Look Out For

  • Child shows signs of being afraid to walk to or walk home from school
  • A child pleads to be driven to school
  • Signs of being anxious or withdrawn as well as a lack of confidence
  • Frequently waking up feeling sick
  • Constantly asking for money or starts to steal money as this could mean they are giving it to the bully
  • Doesn’t want to ride the school bus
  • School work begins to suffer
  • Coming home with damaged or missing property or torn clothes
  • Unexplained bruises or cuts

While these are some classic signs of bullying, there could be other signs as well. The main thing is to notice any change in the child’s behavior and the way they feel about school related topics. Now that there are some signs that can indicate something is wrong, the next step is what people can do to prevent bullying. While these tips may be helpful, the main thing that will aid in the prevention of bullying is having teachers, students, and parents be prepared with the knowledge and tools to prevent bullying before it happens to your or anyone else’s kid.

Tips To Prevent Bullying in Schools

  • Setting up an anti-bullying program and teaching kids the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. What a bully is and forms of bullying should be addressed. There should be discussion about both the physical and mental aspects of bullying, such as threatening, teasing, racial slurs, and theft.
  • Role playing with students. Having students play the role of both the bully and the victim can help them in understanding the feelings associated with both sides and can help in the prevention of bullying.
  • Teach acceptance and tolerance of different religions and cultures. When a child is not understood by others, it may make some students uncomfortable and lead to them being bullied. It is imperative that students come to the realization that just because someone is different they should not be treated with any less dignity or respect.
  • Prevention starts at home. Get parents as involved as possible with any form of bullying education and material that is available and make them realize that the way they act at home can influence the way their child treats others.

Tips For Parents to Prevent Their Child From Being Bullied

  • Try to have the child avoid contact with the bully. Have them play in a different area or in a space that is supervised.
  • Don’t encourage fighting back, as this could lead to physical injury and more abuse.
  • Have your child be ready to report any bullying activity to someone at the school who they trust.
  • Ignore the bully and don’t let them know what they are doing is having any effect on you. If the bullying continues, have them report the problem to a school official.

The prevention of bullying in school is something we all must take seriously and try to put an end to. Teachers need to listen to students, just as parents need to be pro-active, and students need to band together to help and stick up for one another. Only by working together can we truly prevent bullying in school.

Successful Ways to Unlock Local Social Media Strategies For Your Small Business

local-social-media

Using Local Social Networking for Your Smal Business

Social media presents today’s small business owner with a wealth of opportunities to find success in a major way. While many claim it’s all just too complicated, the reality is that most successful local social media strategies can be implemented at little to no out-of-pocket cost. You just need to know what works, what doesn’t and how to enter the playing field with your eyes wide open. Soon, you’ll have all of the ammunition and motivation needed to launch a wildly successful local social media campaign without breaking the bank or jeopardizing your sanity.

Quick Social Media Facts

In a moment, we’ll deal with the ammunition and strategies of successful local social media campaigns. But first, it’s time for some old fashioned motivation by way of powerful facts and statistics that should fuel your passion for social media promotion.

  • One in every nine people in the entire planet are on Facebook.
  • That same Facebook eats up 700 billion minutes of our time each and every month.
  • In May of 2011, 190 million Tweets were being posted every single day on Twitter.
  • Google+ was the fastest social media platform to break 10 million users in just 16 days after launch (it took Facebook 852 days to do it)
  • Foursquare boasts 1.5 billion check-ins, with millions more daily.

Obviously, there’s an audience out there. The challenge is devising a customized local social media strategy (across multiple platforms) that stakes your claim in the local market share using new, exciting ways that yield powerful customer relationships and loyalty.

When I sit outside Brew’d Awakening on Market St. I can literally watch the checkins on Facebook and FourSquare, and tweets from Twitter. There’s no question that social media is alive and active in Lowell. I’m even a Mayor at quite a few establishments myself :)

Unlock Local on Facebook: Status Tags

Since Facebook announces new and exciting developments every time you turn around, some fall under the radar. One that did is the Status Tag. Most of you have tagged a friend in a post or mentioned them in a Check-In status update, so you know how that works. What you may not know is that you can do this for relevant local pages and fan pages when you post. What you need to do first is search out groups and “fan clubs” that like things that you talk about, whether it’s religion, marketing, coffee or whatever your business’s specialty might be. When you find relevant groups (especially those that fall in your local market) you can tag that group or fan page in your posts, and your post will also appear on that particular Fan Page as well.

Case Study: How One Restaurant Hit Local Gold with Status Tags

In a small town in southern Georgia, there is an annual agricultural festival that brings in vendors, experts and enthusiasts from all across the planet. One local mom and pop restaurant started doing status tags about 3 weeks prior to the event, and continued throughout the week. Their offer: Bring in your stub from the Ag Expo for a free piece of pecan pie. The results? Folks were literally standing in line for a piece of that pie, and drinks and dinners, too!

Unlock Local On Twitter: Advanced Search

It’s hard to believe that a simple search tool can pay off in dividends, but when it comes to optimizing your Twitter profile for local marketing efforts, it does – every time! Using the advanced search tool, you can search all users by keyword, location, or many other data breakdowns. You can also search for hashtags to find out what people are saying about a particular subject, topic, etc. This allows you to develop a targeted strategy to grow your following and followers.

Bonus Tip: Insight into Your Local Influential Social Media Personalities

Wefollow.com is a great free tool that allows you to gain clear insight into the local Twitter users in your area. Find out what they’re talking about, who is listening and how to influence the influencers.

Unlock Local on Google+: Coming Soon – Brand Pages

As highlighted earlier, Google+ is by far the fastest growing social media site out there. While it offers a very similar end-user experience to what you would get from Facebook, there are distinct differences, especially from the marketers point of view. Fortunately, while you can do your best with complete profiles, in-depth and locally relevant status updates, etc. there is a new development in the works, Google+ Brand pages which will provide business users with significantly in-depth demographic information about relevant market segments.

Unlock Local on Foursquare: The Best Free Thing You’ll Do

Foursquare is a mobile sensation that has turned patronizing brick and mortar businesses into a game, one where you could ultimately be deemed “The Mayor” of your favorite establishment, with all the pomp and glory that may entail. If you haven’t signed up already, it couldn’t be any simpler. Just sign up at the Business page, “Claim” your establishment and create an offer and watch the site work it’s magic. Because it is integrated with Twitter and Facebook, this can translate into an explosion of traffic and interest in your offer and business.

Of course, you don’t have to be a traditional business to make it work. There is another aspect of Foursquare for Brands that work for publishers, non-profits, religious organizations, media and more. One small childcare center in Jacksonville, FL got a number of local businesses to set up as partners who would “contribute” a small amount (usually $0.05 or less) for every Check-In during a one month period and was able to bring in several hundred dollars in funding with very little trouble through the Merchant Platform.

Summertime at the Eiffel Tower

Arriving in Paris – No Sleep – No English

Long flight but arriving at 6am has its perks. No lines anywhere and I was out of the plane and through customs super quick. Got my bag and called the hotel to check my reservation. Because I’m arriving 2 days late they dropped my reservation so no hotel for me. Do I go right to the office? Find another hotel? Luckily in my morning 0 sleep haze my coworker Kristen called and booked me a room. So now I jump into a taxi and make the hour trip to the hotel close to the champs elysees. I think I’m spelling that wrong. Fix it later. What a weird room setup too. I’ll blog about that later after I wake up.

Gastric Bypass Surgery for my Type 2 Diabetes

What Led Me to Gastric Bypass Surgery

9 Years ago I got married and it was a great day. A great week in my life. One of the things I had to do before the wedding was get a blood test to obtain a marriage license. The Dr that I did this at came back with the results and said “ok you all set to get your marriage license but you got diabetes. you need to eat more vegetables. you too fat.”

Huh? What? Diabetes? Yea ok whatever.

So we went about our wedding day and night and it was fun. Looking forward to the honeymoon the next day was the cap on a perfect day. We couldn’t wait to get down to Key West and spend the week relaxing and having fun. Plus I had the most fun chic to hang with and share all this with.

We took an early flight from Boston to Tampa the next morning and everything was pretty smooth. The flight from Tampa to Key West was a different story. I didn’t eat that morning and we kinda rushed into the airport and into the terminal. A few hours later we landed in Tampa and hurried to get our connecting flight. Running through the airport I started to feel a little dizzy and shakey is the only way I can explain it. Whatev, I get on the plane with my new wife and get seated so we can take off.

Sitting on the 8 passenger plane taxiing out to the runway I start to get this weird numbing feeling in my body and my vision all but shuts off or something like tunnel vision. At this point I’m think ok this aint cool and getting stuck in a plane when I need some medical attention ain’t a cool idea either. So I get out of my seat and began to open the door to the plane to get off. I felt pretty calm at this point but most of it is still kinda hazy. I remember walking off the plane and some guy running at me from the terminal like he wants to tackle me. Laughing at the guy cause he looked funny but he wasn’t too happy. They directed me to the terminal and lots of people were staring at me. I walked up a bunch of steps and that’s about all I remember for a while. Luckily my wife followed behind me but she was probably better off going without me.

symptoms-of-hypoglycemiaI remember kinda waking up sitting in the airport food court eating some shitty hamburger and drinking a Coca-Cola. What happened? My wife told me what went on and we chalked it up to a panic attack or something because the plane was so small. I’ve flown in those planes before and really didn’t think it was that. Whatev again. Let’s get down to Key West.

So we rented a Lincoln Towncar and drove down to Key West from Tampa. I think it took like 7 hours but it was an adventure.

Some time later on I went to the doctor’s and found out I was a Type 2 Diabetic and I need to start on some medication and get in better shape. So began my 10 year struggle with Diabetes and now I’m looking to cure all that with this Gastric Bypass weight loss surgery. I could try me best to explain everything I understand about it but this video below does a better job. Basically what happens is I re-route food I eat into a smaller pouch of a stomach and also do away with the first 18 inches of my small intestine. The combination of these 2 things actually cures my type 2 diabetes right after the surgery. Some thing about forcing the pancreas to work harder to secrete insulin into my body and preventing my liver from releasing sugar into my blood also.

So in just a few days I’ll be getting this surgery at Lahey Clinic in Burlington MA and recovering a few days in the hospital. Wish me luck and hopefully no complications like my Mother had with her gastric bypass surgery. I can’t look at pictures of my Dad anymore to see what I’ll look like when I get older cause he died when he was 37. It’s up to me how I live my life and I don’t want to leave any earlier than I have to. This surgery will extend my life rather than how I was living with Diabetes and being overweight.

Here’s What a Gastric Bypass Surgery Looks Like

Helping Out Emotionally or Physically Is Being a Good Caregiver

A person who provides needed help to an older adult, whether emotional support, physical assistance, or financial assistance, is a caregiver.

  • You may be calling home regularly to say hello and to check up on your parent’s well-being then you are a caregiver.
  • You may be giving your mom a ride to the doctor or the store each week – then you are a caregiver.
  • You may visit your grandfather in a nursing home regularly…then you are a caregiver.

Caregivers may be providing many hours of direct care each week or perhaps providing only financial
help because of distance. No matter what the case, caregiving can be stressful. Here are some guidelines to ensure that your time and efforts are worthwhile. Continue reading

Can ITIL and SaaS Exist Well In The Same Environment?

ITIL and SaaS

Follow ITIL best practices and your SaaS implementation soars

Open skies policies have broadened the competitive landscape and consumer choices for air travel. Similarly, the Software as a Service (SaaS) model of delivering applications increases competition among software suppliers by giving business customers more options.
With the increasing availability of on-demand technologies, local managers within a company can very quickly and directly get applications delivered through SaaS. But with its vast knowledge base, IT should be involved to make sure that customers get the best possible service.

The flexibility of SaaS works if participants have rules to play by. Many IT organizations already have adopted best-practice processes, such as those defined in the ITIL V3 Training, to manage the IT services they provide. Now those processes can provide some rules and control for managing SaaS. But with new approaches like job scheduling software, come misconceptions about technologies and best practices. The sections that follow will dispel some common misconceptions about combining SaaS and ITIL.

Misconception 1: ITIL is old school. SaaS is modern.

They’re incompatible. During the last 20 years, SaaS has revolutionized some businesses. SaaS is more sophisticated now, but it isn’t that much younger than ITIL. As today’s SaaS becomes more widely used, the ITIL processes still apply. However, organizations must apply them a bit differently. To manage SaaS, the IT organization needs feedback from those using SaaS applications. In the past, IT provided the technology for the customers’ use, and IT recorded details about every incident, who
called to report it, when they called, and what they did. With SaaS, IT doesn’t always know the details. Now, business managers can easily opt for their own SaaS solutions, but IT still needs to be involved in supporting, integrating, and managing those solutions. Take, for example, a SaaS consumer who repeatedly encounters a problem when using a sales force automation tool that integrates with internal systems. Each incident will be logged, and the root cause can be identified and eliminated using problem management and workload automation practices. However, if these incidents are logged by the SaaS supplier, the IT organization will not be able to perform proactive problem management itself unless the SaaS supplier collects the correct data and makes that data available.
All the basic tenets of IT service management and ITIL still exist today with SaaS, but the form of communication with the supplier is different. The compatibility of information between SaaS suppliers and consumers must be absolutely precise, so that both sides know what the other is doing. If both the IT organization and the SaaS supplier are using ITIL terminology and processes, then both All the basic tenets of IT service management and ITIL still exist today with SaaS.

Conclusion: SaaS and ITIL are compatible. They go together like James Bond and fast cars.

Misconception 2: ITIL doesn’t matter with SaaS.

Organizations that have spent years establishing ITIL processes and getting ITIL certifications probably will want to use a SaaS solution that is also ITIL focused. In particular, if you are buying a service management SaaS product, ITIL certification shows commitment to the industry and commitment to the product. ITIL-compatible products are more likely to be adaptable with other products that you might use to support internal service management. For a service management tool, look for a solution with built-in ITIL-based best practices and an embedded cross-function process model.

If the SaaS supplier is providing another type of business tool, then be sure that the supplier is prepared to work with you even if the tool and supplier are not ITIL focused. When putting together a service portfolio, clearly describe the services and
the rules that must be followed. Even if the SaaS supplier is not ITIL focused, your IT organization should be. Follow good
ITIL processes; you’ll still need to implement changes and adhere to processes, and you’ll need to make sure you impose the right
regulations from your end.

Conclusion: Just as it is critical for an airplane pilot to complete a checklist before takeoff, following ITIL processes is critical to success with SaaS.

Misconception 3: SaaS should not affect how you manage ITIL processes.

It’s tempting to think that if you use SaaS, you will not need to adjust how you manage ITIL processes. But you do. For example, with SaaS, who will be in charge of the ITIL process of change management? If the SaaS supplier must make a change, how does the
customer get involved in change management? In those circumstances, you can’t have the same kind of change advisory board (CAB) that ITIL recommends. When incidents, problems, and changes occur to a SaaS application, IT needs to know that the SaaS supplier will resolve problems and implement changes. Ask the supplier questions such as: How do you manage your changes? How do I know your changes are going to be successful? What’s the process if the change fails? How will you notify us of proposed changes? How do you manage incidents?

The answers to these questions will differentiate SaaS suppliers. If SaaS suppliers don’t have good service management processes
behind their applications, then this is cause for concern. Clear lines of responsibility and stringent controls will help you know exactly what is happening and where. Bottom line: IT is no longer the owner of changes. So, in addition to rethinking the way it handles change management with a SaaS supplier, IT might include something about change management in the service contract.

Conclusion: Clarify how SaaS suppliers follow ITIL processes and how their own processes integrate with yours. You may also need to evaluate your processes to ensure they are effective in a SaaS environment.

Misconception 4: ITIL gets in the way of SaaS agility.

The on-demand nature of SaaS can offer tremendous agility to IT organizations and business users, and they may not want to stifle that agility with processes such as those in ITIL. But agility without discipline is dangerous. If you make changes too quickly, without considering the ramifications to your strategy, design, and operations, you might inadvertently create tremendous problems that affect service availability. You can compare ITIL processes to the high performance brakes on a sports car; those brakes give you the confidence to be more agile and take a turn at a faster speed. In many cases, having established processes will actually streamline the accomplishment of your goals. ITIL brings the discipline. It will tell you where to set your parameters, how to manage those parameters, and so on. It’s about having the right agility in the right place. Controlling the agility in all directions is important. IT professionals know that doing things quickly without proper planning and without proper notification is a road to disaster.

Conclusion: Following ITIL best practices actually will increase agility.

A framework for flexibility SaaS offers IT organizations and business users more choices and greater flexibility when selecting applications, but agility without discipline can be a problem. And unless your organization uses SaaS exclusively, you will need to integrate old and new IT solutions. The ITIL processes you already use for managing your IT systems can provide some rules and control for also managing SaaS. Follow ITIL best practices and watch your SaaS implementation soar.

How to Stay Healthy in a High Technology Workplace

Computers have changed our world but not without a price. Some of us are getting out of balance. Problems associated with computers are CDT (Cumulative Trauma Disorder), RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), or the worst SOZS (Spaced Out Zombie Syndrome).

My latest tweet showed the food that’s provided for free at my current job.

As with television, you can become addicted to a computer. You sit down at your computer, and seven hours later you finally notice your rear end is numb, your neck and shoulders are in a vice, you are hungry, thirsty, tired, and your spouse has left with all the kids. How did that happen? Where did your mind go? And why did you accomplish so little in that time?

Much has been said about how to support yourself physically on the computer. Invest in a good chair, maintain erect posture, use a wrist rest, and use an anti-glare screen. But what about proper mental and emotional support? For example, if you look at a two-dimensional screen at close range for many hours, it can limit your binocular vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. The constant hum of electronic equipment can switch off auditory skills. These imbalances can cause you to over focus, and become so engrossed in the details of what you are doing on screen. Consequently, you lose track of the big picture, your priorities and goals. Also, the electromagnitic field of a computer can negatively affect body meridians, which in turn affect energy, mind and emotions.

Below are some tricks you can use to stay alert, creative, positive, productive, clear and healthy on computer. Take a 3 minute break every half hour. Set up a timer that will go off reminding you to break. Here are some ideas that will re-balance your system. Try a different one each time: Continue reading

How to Upgrade and Migrate Windows XP to Windows 7

Microsoft Vista is an operating system that has quite a bit of faults. From poor RAM allocation to causing hardware failures with certain computers, Vista has had more than it’s fair share of detractors. However, Microsoft responded in kind with Windows 7 – a powerful operating system that has enjoyed favorable accolades from reviewers around the world. Windows 7 was designed with high-end functionality in mind coupled with a user-friendly interface. No matter which operating system you are currently using, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 7 right away.

While upgrading your operating system may seem difficult, the jump to Windows 7 does not have to be a tough process. It will only require a small chunk of your time, and there are many precautions Microsoft has taken to ensure a quick and easy upgrade for you, the user. There are certain things for you to take into consideration, however, which we will look into here.

The first and most vital step in the process of upgrading to Windows 7 is ensuring that your hardware is compatible with the operating system’s requirements. Microsoft offers a free download of their Windows Upgrade Advisor, which will allow you to see whether or not your computer is compatible with Windows 7 easily and quickly. Chances are, if you are using Windows Vista already, your computer will most likely be compatible with Windows 7 – particularly if the computer has been purchased within the past year. However, that is no reason not to be sure (better safe than sorry), so take the time to head over to the Windows homepage and download the Windows Upgrade Advisor. In addition, you should also download Windows Easy Transfer, which will discuss further in detail when we get to the point where you will need to utilize it.

Now, before you go ahead and purchase Windows 7 discs at your local electronics retailer, it is important to begin backing up your files. Typically, a Windows migration will preserve the majority of your files, if not all of them. In any event, as a general rule it is still important to backup all of your files – even if you are not upgrading to a new operating system. Technical issues can arise with hardware and software which could lead to the loss of gigabytes worth of pictures, documents, and hundreds of dollars (and time!)in software. Take the time to invest in an external hard drive. Of course, it goes without saying that you want to choose an external hard drive that’s capacity will be able to comfortably store all your files. Luckily, most external hard drives run rather cheap. For instance, a 1.7 terabyte hard drive averages around $125. Given that 1.7 terabytes is an amazing wealth of memory, the price is not particularly overwhelming. Note that this step in the process is not entirely necessary, however, it is never a bad idea to set up a security blanket for your files.

Now that you have checked the compatibility of Windows 7 with your system and invested in an external back-up system, it is time to grab hold of the Windows 7 installation discs. If you have not yet purchased them, consider first which version is appropriate for you. Much like Vista, Windows 7 comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions – and both of them are included in the Windows 7 software package. The difference lies within the amount of RAM being processed – 64 bit operating systems process more, but require more to run. Not all computers can handle the 64 bit version, but if your system has four gigs or more of RAM, it should handle Windows 7 just fine. The Windows Upgrade Advisor software can assist you in determining whether or not your computer is more tailored to the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7.

So, now the big moment has arrived. It’s time to upgrade your PC to Windows 7. Insert the installation disc, make sure your computer is properly connected to the internet (to automatically install all of the Windows updates) and get ready to go through all of the necessary steps. An important note: make sure to have the provided 25 character long serial number. Your copy of Windows 7 is rendered useless without it. It is recommended that you use the “easy install” option, so that you may transfer all of your files properly. Once this process is done (it can take anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on your hadrware setup), run Windows Easy Transfer to make sure that all of your old files get put in the places where they are expected. Microsoft has done a great job of streamlining this entire process for you, making it easy to upgrade and migrate to Windows 7. In the unfortunate event that anything happens to your files during the upgrade process (an unlikely possibility), Windows Easy Transfer, a free download, will allow you to transfer all of your files from your external hard drive with simple ease. Windows Easy Transfer will then allow you to re-install all of your programs and drives in simple fashion, ensuring that your computer will have everything it had with your prior operating system.

No matter which operating system you are currently using, an upgrade to Windows 7 can be a good idea for many people. Its new features make navigating your PC easier than ever before, and it is yet to have any serious bugs or malfunction-related issues – unlike Vista. While it may seem difficult to upgrade and migrate to Windows 7 at first, you will find that the process has been set up for success by Microsoft. The process is actually very user friendly, and will only take a small amount of time from your day. Using this guide and taking a few simple measures to preserve your files can go a long way to long-term happiness, so give it a shot today!

Using Foursquare for local business marketing

How Local Business Can Use Foursquare

Companies are starting to use LBS (location-based services) as the new cutting edge marketing to attract a new crowd. The question is whether they’ll pay for the privilege. Or whether Foursquare, which has 400,000 users now voluntarily “checking in” at locations, and broadcasting that to their followers, will transcend its current “it” status among the technorati and become a lasting consumer phenomenon and a marketing tool.

Co-founder Dennis Crowley puts it this way: I think Foursquare found some kind of sweet spot between the:

  • intersection of social utility (Hey, I know where my friends are)
  • sharing/oversharing (I log everywhere I go/everything I do)
  • and gaming/rewards (every check-in gives you a little piece of candy).

Foursquare is designed with these game dynamics in mind, and it’s the absurd appeal of its reward that makes the service so “sticky” for us. ALSO keep in mind each time someone checks in, it exposes your business to all of their followers on Twitter and Facebook as well. That’s over 300,000,000 people.

Foursquare is available in every city (mostly in the U.S.). Right now, the service has a strictly urbanite appeal, and it could inhabit this niche quite nicely. However, if local offers are incorporated in a compelling way as its coverage area expands, it could certainly head towards the mainstream. I can also see people using it just to discover what’s around them, regardless of telling people where they are. “I’ll get sushi at Ki Sushi since Carter P. tells me it’s the best in the city,” or “I’ll hit up an ATM if I go to Trout when D.M. warns that it’s cash only.”

[pullquote]Keep in mind each time someone checks in on Foursquare, it exposes your business to all of their followers on Facebook and Twitter.[/pullquote]Advertisers, both local and national, would be smart to start thinking about their “location” strategies while there’s still a relatively open playing field. By taking advantage of mobile platforms like Foursquare, ones that engage and offer incentives to consumers within the proverbial “last 50 feet,” businesses can bring all the advantages of the social web to their front door.

Startup Foursquare is showing the early stages of what could be some very interesting things for local marketing and fun for its users.

One of the biggest things to leverage for local businesses is using Foursquare “Mayorships” (which you get when you check into a venue the most times compared to others in the city) as a way to give out special deals, like free beer, 10% off your bill every visit or even a free toy for the Mayor’s kid.

That idea continues to expand. I’ve talked with 2 local companies in the Boston area and one is a custom running shoe store that gives out a free pair of sneakers to its Mayor and another Children’s Dentist that could do a free 30-minute teeth cleaning procedure for their Mayor.

Local business using FoursquareAs Amit Gupta noted, a bar/performance space is doing something similar in San Francisco. But they’re also expanding on the idea. Not only does the mayor of the venue get free drinks, but everyone who checks into the venue on Foursquare and shows proof (on your iPhone or other mobile device) gets $2 off a ticket to any performance that night.

While Foursquare didn’t officially sanction this, it loves ideas like this. And it should be obvious why: It entices people not only to go to those venues, but to use Foursquare when they do. The service loves the idea so much, that it’s building support for these types of deals, or “Mayor Bonuses” as they it calls them, into the next version of the iPhone app.

Want to get your business in on this Foursquare bandwagon? Go here and register your company or venue right from its foursquare venue page. There’s even a premade Foursquare sign you can put in your business’s window.
